Climate Change Could Kill 150,000 Americans This Century | The Nation by TWS66in Green

It was not some scientist; it was done by a not for profit.

But you don't know that, because you didn't bother looking it up.

Why didn't you bother? Because you decided for yourself what you wanted the truth to be, and didn't care about reality.

You did cared about did your comfortable preconception, this idea that global warming is fake, because that enables you to keep other views that you find comforting.

You need to make a decision. What's more important to you, believing what's comfortable, or what's real? What's true?

I know, right? I got a bone scan with Technetium-99 this week, and I still don't have superpowers yet. Such a disappointment.

The "forever alone" as a psychological diagnosis - The excessive use of video games and online porn is creating a generation of risk-adverse guys who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school and employment. by Loyoverin TrueReddit

That is a cogent analysis, and it could be true. The loss of economies of scale in entire sectors could create more opportunities for self-organizing efficient employment.

It may be the $64 trillion dollar question of this century, in fact.

I shall have to muse on it. Thank you.

There's no particular economic difference between paying tenant farmers subsistence wages and having slaves that you have to provide subsistence for. Slavery continued on in the guise of tenant farming (also called sharecropping) in the South for a long, long time.

Unless you're working on a graduate thesis, you probably don't care about primary sources. There are specific reasons to use primary sources, reasons that do not typically come up in grade school.

And if you do use primary sources, you're probably more likely to misconstrue them and write something wrong than the consensus view of a Wikipedia article is. Primary sources are raw and difficult to interpret. They often require specialized knowledge that kids in grade school are unlikely to have. The average 8th grader can't check the statistics in a published academic paper, say.

I can see saying 'Use more than Wikipedia' as a way to get people to check their research and not make claims without multiple sources. That's good practice. But 'don't use anything but primary research' is a terrible rule. Much useful research is made by surveying primary research, and much of value is created by translating that into text readable by the common person.

Why don't you feel an ethical responsibility to society to point out the unresearched, the wrong, and the fallacious?

Actually, there are answers for most of those questions. You're just ignorant of neuroscience. Go read some papers.

Those philosophers did not have the benefit of knowledge about the brain that now exists.

You call metaphysics science, but nothing is a science unless it is disprovable with physical evidence.

Evidence suggests that thoughts are just the experience of encoded data in the brain. There is no supporting evidence for anything dualistic about thought.

Some people want there to be a metaphysically privileged mind that somehow exists beyond the physical computer of the brain. They want it so badly they believe in it without a persuasive preponderance of evidence.

Why do they want to believe it so badly? Because it leaves hope for a soul and and afterlife and all that stuff that people want to exist.

It's confirmation bias. The mind is very good at dismissing evidence that leads to conclusions it finds distasteful.

JesseBB was downvoted for advocating dualism, which has been thoroughly disproven by mountains of evidence. It's not polite, but enforcing factual accuracy isn't a bad thing.

The solution that worked for many years was to divide banks into two types so that no one company could both have client information and be in a position to benefit from client information.

The legalization of bribery in U.S. politics through the hole of third party campaign spending permitted the buying of a sufficient number of legislators to overturn that rule, and here we are.

The U.S. engages in behaviors that provide an excellent example of why to choose another social compact, one more designed for the benefit of its citizens.

There are places you can move with effectively no government, but it's not a good idea to toss away the social contract entirely. The social contract provides a great deal of safety that we rely on.

There are lots of governments to choose from. Lots of social contracts. Nobody forces you to choose any particular one.

A nation is a social compact that we choose to participate in, or leave for greener pastures. Nothing more. Think of it as a business partner, not a family member.

[–]Law_Student 23 points24 points ago

In order for this to happen, someone somewhere along the line has to submit a false statement to a court. Either knowingly false, or with reckless disregard for the truth.

That's perjury. It's a crime.

The motive, an assembly line system of foreclosures for the purpose of financial gain, is fairly obvious. The fact that the crime goes unprosecuted, and even unsanctioned, means that there is little incentive not to cast a wide net. No incentive to check for errors. Same name? Must be the right guy.

I largely agree with you, but I think both civil sanction and criminal sanction for perjury are appropriate and necessary in making certain this doesn't happen again. A major bank can absorb quite a few million dollar fines and still have its current system be more profitable than a system that does not engage in fraud, meaning deception for financial gain. Going to prison, though? That isn't something corporate officers can ever write off. That's why criminal sanction is so important.

It is also worth considering corporate dissolution. Corporations exist as artificial financial entities by the will of the courts. Whenever a corporation chooses to engage in systemic violation of the law because it feels the fines are going to be less than the profit, it should be dissolved. Its assets should be liquidated and the proceeds returned to the shareholders, likely at an enormous loss. New banks can form with new management that learns from the example.

There's a prospect to scare corporate management straight. Participate in a loss like that, and no one will ever hire you again.
