TROPHY CASE

Why It's So Hard To Make Nuclear Weapons by trot-trotin TrueReddit

[–]KirbyG 37 points38 points ago

They seem to concentrating on the delivery platform as an obstacle. I think they are being a bit naive in assuming that the weapon needs to be delivered by missile.

In their neighborhood, a truck with a nuclear device in the back could be just as effective, or a small aircraft with the device in the back to detonate in the air.

Sure, to strike the mainland USA a missile is most likely, given the radiation detectors at ports and so on, but to strike at Israel (which is supposedly the major threat) is a missile really necessary?

FineWoodWorking.com calls online woodworkers a "Perfect Storm of Stupidity" by GrillBearsin woodworking

[–]KirbyG 0 points1 point ago

Ahh.

If you want to translate a dictionary, you put the text up and have people send you individual translations of each word which you assemble into a finished product.

If you want to put tags on a billion photographs (as a very large archive did) you post it on the net and let people tag random photos until it's done.

If you want to make a movie, you put out a list of things you need done and people volunteer to do all the small jobs and you get random people coming forward to edit your audio or set up your lighting or whatever based on their expertise and interest, in their free time.

That's what I understood the common definition of "crowdsource" is.

Looks like the definition is broader than I thought.

Crowdsourcing is getting a bunch of people to perform a professional task and only paying for the one you want—everyone else gets stiffed.

No it isn't.

How do yall manage the sound of power tools? by arcnoin woodworking

[–]KirbyG 5 points6 points ago

Talk to the neighbours and make sure no one is nursing a grudge about the noise already and explain to them that you are working on a solution. Work during the day and be sensitive to things like your neighbours having a barbeque party.

Other than that, work on.

What were belly buttons like before humans knew to cut and tie off the umbilical cord? by JewbagXin askscience

That's not true.

There are more than a few theories on why (no one knows) but where the cord is cut has been pretty much ruled out.

[request] Does Anyone have a copy of Windows (Vista, 7, 8) That I can borrow to install? by Brickstreetin Favors

[–]KirbyG 1 point2 points ago

You can't "borrow" a windows install disk without a valid CD key.

The windows validation program means that you can only install a key in one place at a time.

So you aren't looking to borrow a copy to install, you're looking for someone to give you a valid windows key.

[–]KirbyG 1 point2 points ago

Just torrent/download the CD to install, and use the CD key that you have. As long as you have a valid CD key, who cares where you get the media?

Or are you asking for a legal CD key as well?

Very interesting points. Thanks for the counter-argument.

I still prefer malls. :-D

Why do they insist on making these godawful spread out macro-malls?

To shop at more than one store you have to walk a half mile or move your car(if you're carrying anything back) and re-park.

It's a terribly customer-unfriendly design, even in a place where it doesn't hit 40 below for 4 months. In a place with weather like Winnipeg's, it's downright sadistic.

Seriously, are there no architects or planners that grew up here to point out that this is a terrible design??

Canada House Prices Up 2.6% Over Past Year by KirbyGin canada

An American court has ruled that software can’t be regarded as property that may be stolen. by zaradoxin technology

[–]KirbyG 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that what the headline says?

I went and read the decision again, and came back to lay out the case, but then I started to waffle because it all comes down to your definition of the word "property". I think we're on the same page.

He was charged with "transportation of stolen property in interstate and foreign commerce" under the National Stolen Property Act, and that law specifically calls for physical property to be moved.

He was also charged under the Economic Espionage Act which similarly has a requirement that the theft be regarding a "product" which the court agreed to be physical.

He wasn't found not guilty because he didn't do it, he was found not guilty because the laws they charged him with didn't apply to his case. It doesn't say anything whether he could have been charged under different laws.

I don't know if he could have been charged with another type of theft or some other similar crime. Hopefully an actual lawyer might opine here.

He was certainly in breach of contract, but that isn't really relevant to the discussion.

[–]KirbyG 0 points1 point ago

The ruling said that the specific statute he was charged under required physical property to be stolen (he wasn't just chrged with "theft" he was charged under a very specific property theft law), and in this case there was no actual physical property stolen.

He could have been charged under a number of different laws involving theft, but the prosecution chose this one and they chose wrong.

Wood and Water Protection Question by SIKQASin woodworking

I did a lot of research on a similar question, and the last post on this page (by MSUMoose 04 Jan 2010, 16:37) seems to sum up my reading. Lots of people have used Thompsons, but lots of people are vehemently opposed. Varnish is good but second best, and resin is the top grade.

"porn" in this context never meant "something amazing". It means "pictures to gawk at and drool over" which those various subreddits contain (if you happen to be interested in landscapes, interesting portrait photography, etc.)

This was my experience too. Rather than subscribing to specific subreddits, I read r/all and use RES to filter out particularly voluminous or uninteresting (to me) subreddits by name and keyword.

I usually wait a while and read though, to see if something grabs my attention. I eventually filtered all of the My Little Pony stuff and hope to never see it again, and filter all the trees stuff because there's zero percent chance of that happening, but seeing the Game Of Thrones posts over the months has made me get the books and start reading.

Dog Kennel / End Table (x/p woodworking) by KirbyGin DIY

[–]KirbyG[S] 11 points12 points ago*

Is that a gut feeling, or do you know anything about dog training?

Crate training is a well-known method, especially for puppies. The crate is never used for punishment, and the dog is never forced into the crate. There is a favorite blanket to lie on. The dog begins to see the crate as a safe spot (the theory says a den) and spends time there when they want to relax.

When we go out, she goes in the crate with a treat and a chew toy. When we get back she is happy to see us and spends some time saying hello and then goes out the back door to do her business.

She learns not to do her stuff in the house, our house doesn't get damaged, and she has a bed during the day (we're home all day every day usually).

We've found it to produce well-adjusted,calm dogs. Many experts have too.

EDIT: She's in it about 4 hours a week... but even if a dog is in there more, crate training is a well-accepted, succesful method for training dogs. It's usually paired with the alpha method for calming and training your animal. Animals that have safe places, and know their place in the heirarchy (and know that their place is not on top) are much more obedient and calm and happy.

[–]KirbyG[S] 4 points5 points ago*

If she's free to roam, she'll pee or poop on the floor because she can. When she's in the crate she can hold it and go outside when we get home.

She has also chewed a few things she shouldn't.

She's young, she'll improve as she matures.

Crate training is great for a dog. Even now she spends hours in there sleeping or chewing on her toys with the door open.

The original plans are here, and they are quite a bit larger than the one I modified and built. The pictures and the gallery show some pretty big dogs in similar designs.

How to simplify the Bible down to one page.... by OhioJunglist2in atheism

[–]KirbyG 4 points5 points ago

But it's not right! The whole "Be a good person" thing is simply not the Bible's message at all. Lots of the things he says to do in scripture are pretty dickish.

The Bible down to one page would be "WORSHIP GOD AND DO WHAT HE SAYS." which is a whole other matter.
