What.CD New Uploading Rules - No more Ogg Vorbis by dscerin trackers

320kbps constant bitrate is a waste of space, since the encoder most of the time doesn't need to actually be encoding at 320 to attain the desired quality. So you end up with files that are padded with unnecessary data.

V0 is a variable-bitrate encoding and has essentially no perceptible difference in audio quality from 320 but averages smaller bitrates (usually on the order of 240kbps) and thus smaller filesizes. So I always grab V0 :P

There seems to be a preponderance on r/coffee towards french press and drip filters; is there a particular reason for this? by EastoftheRiverNilein Coffee

[–]KimJongTwo 0 points1 point ago

You're right that those are all espresso-based drinks, but those aren't "coffees," they're drinks that have coffee (espresso) in them. To use an analogy, calling a latte a kind of coffee is like calling a martini a kind of spirit. Generally those are drinks one would get at a cafe (or Starbucks), made by a barista, using the very expensive commercial espresso machines mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Of course, if you have the means to make espresso, you can also make those drinks at home.

The word espresso just refers to a particular method of brewing coffee (albeit one that produces a very different style of coffee from other methods). There's no special name for French press coffee because that's all it is: coffee made in a French press. Unlike a latte, it's not a fundamentally different drink from, say, auto-drip coffee, or even espresso, which, while being very different from coffee prepared in other ways, is still coffee at the end of the day.

So basically, there's espresso (from which lattes etc. are made) and then there's everything else (e.g. auto-drip, French press, pour-over, Aeropress).

I'm kinda tired, I hope this post made sense.

Star Tavern in Orange, Tick Tock Diner in Clifton, Fridays at Willow Brook mall in Wayne

One of these things is not like the other...

Upvoted anyway for Star Tavern. And I definitely plan on getting to Tick Tock at some point this summer.

LastPass is incredible.

For anyone who's sketched out by the idea of having your passwords stored on a remote server: There are so many layers of encryption on your passwords the people at LP couldn't look at them even if they wanted to, and it keeps a local copy (also encrypted, of course) on your computers/smartphone that automatically syncs, in case LP's servers go down for any reason. They've done a really good job at making it both secure and reliable.

Can anyone give me a true synonym. by corybantin linguistics

[–]KimJongTwo 1 point2 points ago

I guess I hadn't really taken the relative levels of taboo the two words have into account, and I definitely won't debate that "shit" is considered more vulgar than "crap." Do you think it's possibly register-dependent though? I know that my close friends and I don't really have any reservations about swearing when talking to each other, which essentially makes the two words close to 100% interchangeable in that register (though admittedly "shit" is much more common).

But of course, this is just my idiolect.

Can anyone give me a true synonym. by corybantin linguistics

[–]KimJongTwo 4 points5 points ago

I've always thought that "crap" and "shit" are pretty close to true synonyms; in most situations I can think of they're more-or-less interchangeable, though I guess there are a few sayings/set phrases which can only take one or the other (e.g. I've never heard anyone say "up crap creek without a paddle").

Am I on to something here or can someone refute this?

Chrome Tab Management. by Onslaught147in chrome

[–]KimJongTwo 0 points1 point ago

I agree that's how it should work, but there seems to be a disconnect between how it should and how it does, for no apparent reason. I've tried dragging both with and without shift held down, with the same result each time.

Command-click is for selecting multiple nonconsecutive tabs, and drag and drop doesn't work there either. Funnily enough, when I right-click after selecting multiple tabs I still get the options to close/pin all the tabs... I just can't move them all.

This has never ever worked for me, and for the life of me I can't figure out why. I shift-click and they all highlight, and I try to drag one but it only drags that one. Is it somehow not implemented on OS X, perhaps?
