If true happiness had a face... by danthebakerin schnauzers

I'll see your happy face and raise you a happy puppy face!

Apparently I don't have the happy post-dog-park face anymore. :-(

Brett Lawrie keeps helmet on but still tagged out on appeal of this play (best angle showing step toward 3rd) by recoveringsophistin baseball

[–]Kennertron 2 points3 points ago

I don't know the answer to that question, unfortunately.

As a player, you'd want to get an explanation for the call, obviously, but I would argue (and I know it seems like I'm biased) that the call wasn't going to be overturned anyways. Maybe a jog over there to the ump to ask what the reason for the call was?

I would assume when the manager came out to talk about it that he got the explanation he wanted.

I don't think the Rays TV booth had the angle that the GIF shows, or weren't shown that angle in the first place, as they didn't even show that angle on TV at the time. When I saw it from the "behind home plate" view, it looked like a little feint rather than a side-step.

That's our thing... we have a small-ish house right now but the lot we're on doesn't afford much of a back yard. I already feel bad for our 2 minis because there isn't much room out there.

We've had a chance to meet a giant in person at the dog park and she was very friendly and had a great personality.

In fairness (in case I seem like I know what was going on at the time) if I were at the game I probably would have had no idea what was going on at the time. I don't think I've ever seen a call like that before.

Wow, watching that reminds me of how I feel watching Sean Rodriguez playing 3rd base as of late.

Brett ran over to the ump to talk to him, almost like he was trying to steal the base again. He was probably just as confused as I was when the call was made.

He (Lawrie) took off on the pitch and the ball was hit towards center. Upton ran it down to make the catch. When Lawrie made his slide into 2nd, he popped up and made a move towards 3rd (the angle they show in the GIF wasn't shown on the Rays broadcast last night, much better angle), then ran back to 1st so he wouldn't get doubled.

The umpire called him out for not tagging 2nd again on his way back to 1st, since he made the move to 3rd. Brian Anderson of the Rays broadcast said it was a "ticky-tack" call, but still valid. The angle shown here makes it not so ticky-tack in my opinion, since I've seen guys get tagged out at first after overrunning the bag for less of a feint to 2nd.

Oh man... my wife and I would love a giant schnauzer but we have agreed we need a bigger yard first. How is life with a giant?

Based on the response I get from both our dogs, I would say it's the freezer. If you go in to get ice, they will show up at your feet with happy butts.

Our older dog likes a squirrel toy, and our younger pup has a mallard duck that honks and he'll carry around the house with him. We bought it about a week after we got him, after he annoyed the heck out of us with the squeaker in the squirrel. He also enjoys a rabbit (that honks like the duck).

I tell you what, winter time sucks in our house because there's no baseball on. It's just a constant presence during the season, even if we're not fully watching the game.

My dad isn't a baseball fan anyways, I picked up the game from my grandfather.

Aside from that, I like it because baseball is one giant exercise in game theory between the battery and the batter.

5W amp suggestions by horser4dishin Guitar

[–]Kennertron 1 point2 points ago

I have a little Bugera V5 for my practice amp. Tube amp, switch on the back to make it 0.1W, 1W, or 5W, and it even has a headphone jack. It's a good little amp to play through, as I can kick it down to 0.1W and crank up the gain/volume to get some nice grit.

And it's around $200.

Interesting idea for the constant inter league play next year. by kyledoodin baseball

[–]Kennertron 0 points1 point ago

I feel like, as a fan of the local AL team, that the DH should switch during interleague play. I'd love to be able to go to the local ballpark and watch our pitchers bat when an NL team comes to town.

Perhaps they should do it a bit like the NFL when it comes to interleague play? Each season, the NFL teams play games against all teams in 2 of the other league's divisions. So, for instance, MLB could do 15 interleague games, with 5 three-game series against one specific division's teams. Like the AL East would play the NL Central for that year.

The only rub in that part is doing the "rivalry" things like Yankees vs Mets, Cubs vs White Sox, Rays vs Marlins, etc.

I tried to be smart and packed two small umbrellas in a small messenger bag to bring with us. It rained a little bit on us while we were waiting for the gates to open, and it was a drizzle (insert Snoop joke here) when we left... glad I brought them though.

Everything was moving mostly NNE so we were just keeping an eye on the radar via the interwebs to see if we had anything major coming post-game.

We went to a game while in the STL for the robotics championship competition there and had a good time. We were in the very last row about even with 1st base at the very top, but the view was still good. Cold breeze though. Nice stadium there.

[–]Kennertron 0 points1 point ago

My wife and I usually sit in the upper deck at the Trop, about even with 3rd base (sections 307-311 for those who know the layout). We get to see into the Rays dugout, still can get some perspective on pitches, and we're near the bathrooms and a not-too-busy concession stand.

I've sat in the press level seats before, and those were pretty nice, but for the price difference I'll take the upper deck, thanks. Once of these days I'd like to sit behind home plate in the cushy seats so I can yell at the umpire and he might actually hear me.

Red Sox get called on 3 balks in Wednesday night's loss by Vinylzenin baseball

[–]Kennertron 0 points1 point ago

I was at the game. The home plate umpire called the last 2 balks (1st base ump called the first one). So unless the 2nd base umpire made some sort of signal to home, he didn't call it.

Sitting in the stands, I was taken by surprise on the 3rd balk call. We didn't even see the pitcher move before it was called.

This one is probably the best of them all. A nice breaking ball that the pitch frame looked so natural as to barely be noticeable.
