Debate an Anarcho-communist: The Truth about the Non-aggression Principle and Capitalism by Evolutionfirein Anarcho_Capitalism

Scarcity is created by capitalists

Please explain the scarcity present in pre agricultural societies without capitalism.

Extra points if you know where supply curves shift.

Some people do the same thing with alcohol and get shitfaced everyday but live their lives fine. That doesn't mean at the level of statistical demographics that the general statement "don't make too much of a habit for it" is false. Just like alcohol if you were talking to the average person you'd advise them to be responsible, use caution and check to see if they might be addicted.

I would then warn you that I often skip the last page of the book just to make sure things turn out okay. The first time I did that I remember feeling very scared for Harry Potter's saftey in his first year and was relieved to see that he was still alive. I would say this after you had written the number down.

As far as outrage at people doing things wrong I have two words for you, Granny Weatherwax.

Amuse a non-American: Someone tell me the difference between Democratic and Republican parties (in simple terms) which I always hear in the news. by nojohndoein AskReddit

Most people mistake the Republican non support of welfare to be callous. It's a common trope. In practice I've personally found Republicans in the real world concerned with local action and personal relationships. I can think of a good number of people who were foster parents, informally adopted single mothers and their children into their home, and gave dutifully to churches that supported giving to the poor and needy.

These people are against welfare.

My understanding of the data shows this is more common than not as Republicans give to charity across the board more, not just to their churches but it shows up in secular charity volunteer hours and blood donations (things you don't see in people who only care about their church)

As a result I'm prickly when people throw out this "republicans don't care about the poor" trope. The far above example is an extreme but when republicans say "I support voluntary charity" a great number of republicans put their money where their mouths are.

This may not be true of buisness and party leaders but my exprience of the average republican has been good most of the time. You just have to tolerate talk radio while you're in their truck. No big deal. :D

I like Autism Spectrum Disorder better. ICD10 is making it a spectrum disorder and doing away with the AS diagnosis code.

Can you identify yourself becoming more conservative or liberal over the years? WHY? by snotfin PoliticalDiscussion

I don't believe in natural rights. In a materialist worldview there's nothing to hang them on. They are fine heuristics but at the end of the day I'm a consequentialist.

[–]KarmaKaiser 3 points4 points ago

Marx had no metaphysical basis for his materialist determinism. He had a good understanding of psychology and alienation but his prescriptive policies were a mess.

He's like a doctor who diagnoses you correctly then gives you leeches.

EDIT: I wish to redact my statement. It overreached and I don't wish to defend it.

I will keep that doctor metaphor in my backpocket for later though.

At this point, I consider myself socialist for necessities, but generally libertarian for luxuries.

A mainstream view among actual academics. Hayek support a minimum income and Friedman supported a negative income tax. Contemporary Libertarian Charles Murray supports a cash grant of $10,000 indexed to inflation in exchange for the abolition of other welfare programs. Internet ideologies are never subtle thinkers on any side.

This is an inaccurate picture. Republicans support charity are on average giver a larger portion of per capita income to aid organizations at home and abroad.

Democrats find this strategy dubious and wasteful. Democrats feel that a centralized authority to give to charity is a better way of showing support for the least well off.

[–]KarmaKaiser 2 points3 points ago

I'll attempt to be as neutral as possible and give both parties the benefit of the doubt.

Democrats represent a technocratic centralized authority with liberal egalitarian economic values and loose social norms. Their main concern is Fairness and Equality. You might find them equal to the British Tory. Democrats believe in central government and running programs through the federal system.

Democrats are a big tent party who represent everyone from social liberals who don't care much about economic concerns, to socialists, to regular people who feel Democrats run things better but aren't sure why. This big tent nature leads them to be fractured and easily routed when they have equal numbers. A super majority is not a super majority due to the diversity of views. Many mainstream liberals mistake this for cowardice when in fact it is infighting

Republicans are another big tent but are more united in their beliefs, particularly since the Tea Party movement. Republicans can vary as Socially Liberal Fiscally Conservative Libertarians, to the Religious Right. Republicans are concerned with Liberty (in the sense of individual economic freedoms) Tradition, and Economic Growth. They believe freer markets lead to greater growth but most are not approving of removing every regulation as they are often charged with. Republicans are disapproving of federal intervention in economic matters, preferring states to decide. When it comes down to legislation Republicans stop infighting and put up a united front. This is seen in the shrinking of government in the Clinton Administration and the growth of government in the Bush years. When you talk to the Tea Party you hear how unhappy they were in the Bush years but that they didn't protest because he was 'their guy.' Their deference to authority is evoked even when it goes against their goals. Their social goals include maintenance of tradition with only gradual social change. This makes them mortal enemies with social liberals who see themselves of freeing victims from brutal authority and bigotry. Republicans see themselves as vanguards of a noble tradition under attack. You can draw your own conclusions about reality, but I believe this is more or less an accurate view of perception.

It should be noted that there will be some misdirection about whether we really have two parties. We do. The misdirection comes from being too far on either side of the political spectrum. Rothbarian Anarcho Capitalist will call any government with an income tax socialist. And Noam Chomsky will call any government with a large corporation inside it's boarders a corporatist nanny state. These are exaggerations but they are illustrative of the point that if you are too far to either side it is harder to see the difference between the two parties. When you contrast their stated goals they seem quite apart.

I will not address lobbying corruption and the like. It is quite bad here, not nearly as bad as many countries, but it is a problem. The reason I will not address this is that language becomes tilted and blames one industry or side without due evidence.

Depends on where you are and what rent is like. I assume it must be horrible in California's big cities, Boston, NYC and the like.

In the Midwest it'd be plenty easy, I ran the math once out of curiosity pricing apartments in 5 nearby cities, running the benefits of food stamps (not section 8, I assumed my hypothetical person wanted to avoid crime) medicaid and other welfare programs and assumed poverty level pay. Not accounting for disasters something like 15% income was savable per year.

It is not honest to ask questions when you already have an answer.

Good food isn't actually that expensive, it takes more preparation time, but the cost of frozen veggies and eggs aren't that bad. Someone making 10k is working part time, so he has time for preparation.

First-borns are known to be leaders, middle children to rebel against the first, while last-borns are known to be more social and outgoing. Do you fit these stereotypes or is it a myth? by solongasIin AskReddit

[–]KarmaKaiser -1 points0 points ago

Economic data show it to have some validity. There is more income inequality between siblings than there is among the rest of the population with first borns taking the lion's share. There's a interesting moment in Micheal Sandal's Justice, a public television series he taught at Harvard where he asks the class to identify themselves if they are a firstborn.

Over 90% raised they hands.

You didn't listen, you didn't answer my question and you don't seem to be curious about the question why religion exists at all. It's an interesting question to ask of a group of social primates, but by all accounts you're mainly concerned with beating your chest at how stupid and ignorant the other is. You are not honest.

Why does religion still exist in developed countries? by neubsin AskReddit

[–]KarmaKaiser 1 point2 points ago

Why religion in particular? There are so many things that people believe in that give them comfort, why pick one.

Why not pick stories generally? Studies show the more you read, watch television and generally consume fiction the more you believe in the just world fallacy. The more you think there is an inerrant goodness to the world. Tell me how would you react to a anarrativist who tells you All stories are lies and he will not listen to them. He neither reads fiction, nor watches television, nor consumes anything that isn't true.

If you do not find him strange, then I will guess you cannot empathize with religious people at any point. The vast majority of religious people are kind loving giving people. In fact being religious makes you happier, more willing to give to charity, more willing to lend aid to friends family etc., more willing to say you have a purpose in life.

These are all the same as stories, aren't they? Stories that bring people together.

People say that Religion is a crutch. As an atheist I say you have no right to deny a person a crutch until you have been crippled. I would finally say do not get angry when people disagree with you. Get curious instead.
