So my budget survival kit arrived... by hairyneilin Survival

[–]KabelMiner 2 points3 points ago

I think one of the main problems people have with them is that they go for a straight vertical pull. Though this is the natural way to do it, it tends to bind the wire which is when you get breakages from tugging on it. I've found that the work quite a bit better if you hold it such that the two sides of the wire form a 90 to 110 degree angle in between them. this seems a little awkward at first but it usually cuts pretty well. In the end it's a pocket survival kit and nothing in there is going to take down a tree, aim for smaller fuel sources.

Supposedly another option is to hook either end to a branch to form a rudimentary bow saw. I've never tried it so I can't tell you if it works or not.

Is it just me or has this been overlooked as one of the best defenses against zombies? by pigpen5in zombies

[–]KabelMiner 4 points5 points ago

I’d have to disagree on those estimations, I've worn full shirts before (if I remember correctly they were European 4-in-1 pattern with 14 gauge rings), and while they are heavy, they are definitely not 100+ pounds. I will cede however that, outside of a few times, most of my experience is with my own pieces which generally focused on thinner, smaller rings in a tighter weave.

To OP if you're going to go with maille then I'd suggest making your own, it's not very difficult to learn and a fun hobby. Furthermore, this would let you tailor your weights and sizes. Remember if you're making zombie maille it doesn't need to stop a sword, just a bite; you can use thinner rings, lighter metals etc. For the store-bought option I'd suggest a shark-bite suit, though I doubt they're cheap.

My Zombie Outbreak Gear. Please give suggestions/weaknesses in my outfit. It's meant to be lightweight for going on foot. How long will I survive? by razdrazchelloveckin zombies

[–]KabelMiner 5 points6 points ago

How can you give him hell for his clothing/gear choices being more about style then function, and at the same time chastise him for having a gun even though zombies aren't real? You establish in your gun argument that this is all just fantasy anyway, so why should he be out dropping money on all the top-of-the-line gear. Furthermore, IMO, half of the fun of the zombie prep game is using what you already have available, rather than going out to buy the best-of-the-best.

What is your zombie apocalypse plan? by helen93in AskReddit

[–]KabelMiner 0 points1 point ago

My apartment is pretty easy to defend and I have a solid supply of melee weapons, firearms, ammunition, food, camping/survival gear, first aid supplies and booze. I would fill all available containers with clean water and shut down/cover-up any sources of noise, I already have heavy curtains over all of my windows so light won't be an issue. With any luck the surrounding population will be making so much noise that no zeds will even notice my place so I can just lay low for a few days. During the initial stages of the outbreak I would contact my family and SO and make sure they take similar steps of laying low for the mayhem to calm down. We'd also determine a set time for everyone to make their way to the family cabin in the woods. It's easy to get to but away from population centers, pretty easy to patrol/defend and fairly central to everyone's geographic location. Once we've all rendezvoused at the cabin we take stock of all of our supplies and determine whether to stay put and fortify our position or prep a convoy to get even further away from populated areas.

Not really unfortunately, I just kept trying till I got something to work and then tried to replicate it.

The FIRST thing anyone would do is just play around with it, like just randomly dropping things through the ceiling or the like.

Creating a carrying case or display place with a custom inlay. by freakinweekendbabyin DIY

[–]KabelMiner 2 points3 points ago

I had a link saved for a spray-foam and fabric trick but I can't seem to find it. Basic idea is to lie whatever you're going to carry/display in the bottom of your case. Then lay a piece of fabric large enough to cover it and extend out of the side of the case. Press the fabric smooth around the object(s) and the bottom/walls of the case and fill it with a can of spray foam. After the foam sets you can trim the excess cloth from the edges and when you flip it around it form a tray that will set inside the case with a custom formed space for the object(s).

Disclaimer: I've never attempted this myself but it's generally considering to work and I see no reason why it wouldn't.

Additionally: if you place a heavy plate or such to take up some of the space on top of the foam, you'll be left with additional storage space beneath the tray once you remove the plate.

r/zombies, semi autos or revolvers? by senorrawrin zombies

[–]KabelMiner 2 points3 points ago

For every situation the perfect weapon exists, there are times when a revolver would be superior and times when the auto would be. If you don't have the time to think through and prepare for the situation ahead; or if you are not sure what you'll be going up against at any given time then follow the golden rule of weapon choice: Always go with the one you're more comfortable with. For example: I have two .40 caliber pistols a Glock and Walther P99, and while I am proficient with both, I am infinitely more comfortable with the Walther. In an emergency situation, if I could only grab one, I would vastly prefer the Walther even though I have higher magazine capacities with the Glock.

It's the opposite for me. Though a friend and I came up with a brilliant theory once, that Archer is what Coach McGuirk sees in his head.

Which is better for the zombie uprising? Fortifying or roaming? by veryhonestliarin zombies

[–]KabelMiner 12 points13 points ago

Fortifying from a well supplied position with multiple escape and evacuation plans. Also, don't just hole up behind the wall, you need outer perimeters patrolled by well trained/well armed groups with silent weapons to dispatch walkers before they can summon groups to the base. Furthermore, the patrols will also be able to handle roaming bandit groups without giving away the position of the base. This should prevent you from being surrounded without warning, allowing you to evacuate if needed. Always have supplies and equipment ready for an evacuation no matter how secure you feel in your base.

It's not true ninja unless you run up the stairs on all fours and then do the forward roll to your feet at the top. And yes, I still frequently ascend stairs that way.

Have you ever read Dave Barry's article about North Dakota wanting to change to just Dakota? Good stuff. On a different note, are there any good open-use wilderness areas or national parks up there?

More to the point, how do you be, not just one, but 10 ninjas in a kilt? Because, as we all know, that's the only lower garment you're allowed to wear.

Want to use these cheap stakes to make small woodworking projects. What do you think? by mjklinin DIY

[–]KabelMiner 0 points1 point ago

Those are 1x2s not 2x4. I use those stakes a lot for surveying. The two main issues with them is that many are warped (although this is less of an issue with the shorter ones), and that they often have a lot of knots in them. If you find some straighter bundles without too many knots you shoud be okay.

Can you cook? Home cooked candle light dinner and a good bottle of wine or two is usually a solid bet.
