I'm a novice, so I'll frequently go for obscure mythology. For instance, in my sci-fi universe, Enlil is the name of a planet with high amounts of wind.

Other times, I'll go for some sort of wordplay. In this case, a high-technology businessman being named Albert, but with a nickname "Oct", making him Oct Al - and because he's a source of funds to other, more prominent characters, his name is also an anagram of "lacto".

I haven't paid much attention to linguistics as it's a relatively soft setting, so I can't offer a lot on the actual "what do the people say" side. I was considering something cheap like translating into Cherokee (written as a syllabary), reversing the syllables, and then writing the result back in Roman characters. I haven't tried it yet, so I have no idea if it would sound right or be politically correct.
