It is not a question of you finding it funny, it is a question on the overall effect it could have on certain men's psyche, and their perception of societal norms. Just like you, I found a number of the jokes against men pretty humorous, however that does not mean they can have a negative effect in the long run.

As for Halal/Kosher meat: Apparently the law to ban it never went through in Finland (only in Sweden), so therefore it is legal to have Halal and Kosher meat, it is just very rare. Thanks for calling me out on this, it is always good for me to fact check what I remember happening, which apparently was not true in this case.

So we are both arguably right. Apparently the law was ambiguous for a long time, with questions regarding cultural circumcision, and the circumcision of a non-consenting adult. From what I was able to gather, it appears that it took until 2008 for the Ministry of Health to decide the legality of circumcising a child, where before that it was a questionable legal issues that only came up when there were medical complications. With that in mind, there are still questions regarding the legality, and it seems that it still happens, but the issue does not come up unless reported (vs actively enforced, which would be difficult)

It was rather that pretext and type of people supporting the law, versus the actual law itself, that bothered me. Understandably the law has its own positive points, but the time period in which it was decided made the passing more questionable.

There is no question that women can be just as vulgar as men (I know enough female redditors to experience this), but rather as a whole, do women make the type of sexually violent jokes that men make. Although degrading jokes involving the line "what was she doing out of the kitchen" can easily lead to a negative and degrading view of women, I always think back to the jokes I heard as a young teenage, and question the effect it has on some (most likely a minority) of men.

Two jokes I heard a lot from other males

" What do you tell a women with two black eyes. Nothing, you already told her twice"
Strawberry shortcake in reference to sex "Jizzing on a girls face, and punching her in the nose".

Both of these are violent, with men in the dominant position. I wonder how after hearing these, plus many more, would affect men's view on rape and violence.

As I mentioned before, women make a lot of jokes involving men, however as a whole, I rarely hear the vulgar jokes coming from women as often as men, and I wonder what affect that has.

But this is a large reflection on your culture and is the white elephant in the room when discussing life in Finland. The American dream is about going from rags to riches, even as an immigrant.

Finland has many policies that are deemed as advances for human and animal rights, but are anti-immigration at heart (if you look at who the supporters were). This includes their ban on circumcisions and Halal meat, both done within a year of the 9/11 attacks, and growing immigration.

I do not mean to insult Finland, but instead bring up that America is constantly judged for its issues regarding race relations, however whenever other countries are mentioned, they always happen to forget that major point regarding the treatment of immigrants and their ability to move forward within that society.

I actually wrote the same exact thing that platkat wrote, regarding the whole "useless husband" ideology, however I have to wonder the effects of that type of joking vs. how a lot of men joke about women. As a male, I have heard jokes regarding violent sexual actions and even ones that are just violent.

I wonder if women make jokes like that, since I have never heard anything to that caliber come from a woman (and I worked at an all girls camp for 3 years, which is where I heard most of the men bashing jokes I know).

I do not want to turn this into a "us vs. them" like atmosphere, and I do wonder what affect those jokes have on women, especially older women (who may already be having marital issues), but I think the above study is talking about a whole other league of jokes.

I would love to read more about the affect of sexist jokes on women, and wonder if the reaction is the same. The minute you brought that up, I thought about all of the commercials shown during the day with the incompetent husband who can't take care of the kids or clean the house, and the wife that comes to save the day (low side of sexist humor), or the effects of the sexist jokes I see my Aunt and her middle aged friends make. Even more so, the shirts they used to sell to girls saying things like "Boys suck, throw rocks at them". I cannot imagine these things would lead to violence, but instead wonder what affect it does have, especially on older women, as opposed to younger men.

Now, I would like to point out that (as a male), I am of the general impression that the jokes men make are more sexually explicit, and violent, than the ones women make. I think back to being a young teenager and hearing the jokes regarding sexual violence and general violence against women, and that does not even include jokes involving their place being in the kitchen. With all of that in mind, I have never had an issue with respect towards women, or even violence, but it is not surprising that some men may.

A very old article, but a beautifully written one that brings up a number of interesting points. What grabs my attention the most is the paragraph:

Actually this is a common trait among white Americans. Many of them grasp onto their ethnic "heritage" of which they have no real connection. Many white people discuss their German, Polish, Italian, etc. heritage, bringing it up whenever their race comes into question. Sociological studies have found that even being 3 generations removed with no knowledge of the culture or language does not stop people from claiming this heritage.

You are completely correct. Maybe the better question (in which the answer is "emotional") is why do we care so much about the facts for some cases and not others. Why do we take one person's word against another, even when the latter provides sufficient evidence or logic, and continue to attack. Is there any way to prevent these mobs in the future, especially when it is one redditor attacking another (remember, we are a community of sorts)?

So what I found so interesting about this article (and more Reddit) was their ability to debunk Wikipedia articles and look into every detail of the evidence, not just the story itself. Although a truly amazing feat (maybe just by my own standards) what really amazed me was how it happens in inconsequential cases such as a theory about a murderer from the 1900s, yet in cases where a redditor talks about being wronged by someone, we have been known to attack others based on story alone.

Why did it only take 20 minutes to debunk a Wikipedia entry, and yet no one thinks to do that when one person makes a claim against another or a company?

I came here to say the same exact thing. Although some of the things on the list were true (spousal abuse and negligent father) talentless was such an outright lie, I could not sit quietly. Although Paul did write the majority of the songs on Sgt. Pepper, it was John who wrote the majority of "A Day in the Life", considered by many (including Rolling Stone) to be one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Furthermore, many of the hits on latter albums were also most written by Lennon (just as many were also written by McCartney).

To top things off, although I think Ram is the best post-Beatles solo album, there is no question that John way more famous singles than McCartney and Harrison combined.

I think it was, not because it proved his point, but rather because he was able to go through the process of modeling the probability of winning. As someone who works in OR, I actually loved the article for the analysis, but also the addition of the human aspect.

With OR and any sort of research into optimization, many forget the human aspect of of every day interactions. We are not machines, and not every investment one makes has a positive return, a lot of our decisions are not logical, but rather pleasure based.

On the other hand, they have been ~$50 (not accounting for inflation) since the N64 came out in 1996, so the price has not fluctuated dramatically in the past 16 years.

The growth of video games definitely helps, but I have to wonder, with games becoming more complex, even in the past 10 years, for how much longer these companies can turn a profit.

That is completely true, and sometimes there is a deeper meaning, and sometimes there isn't. What I like about modern art (not the ones displayed here) is that it sometimes make you really think about something common because it is now in an art museum. Sometimes it is complete bullshit (dirt put in front of mirrors) but other times it really gets you to think.

I think your point perfectly describes the issue with modern art. The first time someone displayed a toilet, nude body-paintings, or even drew a single line on a canvas, it was original, and even thought provoking, making one question what art means, etc. Now, it is just infuriating, because I have seen it done so many times before, that the original message is lost.

With that said, I don't think Modern Art is so much for understanding and being pretentious, as much as it (in theory) allows the artist to express themselves in non-conventional ways. Through a simple idea, they can evoke many emotions and question art appropriately. One of my favorite modern art pieces was done by a Japanese artist. It was a black canvas with the date painted on, using a sans serif like font. Beyond the fact that I found it aesthetically pleasing, it made me think a lot about dates, and how that canvas can have such a deep meaning to someone. Maybe that was the date they (or someone they loved) was born, or passed, so on and so forth. Although simple, I have never seen anything like that in an art gallery, and because of that it really made me think about it.

So I the difference is originality and the ability to add more to a simple concept (such as scribbling) than what is instantly obvious. Some modern art does an amazing job of going about this, evoking emotions from a simple drawing, structure, or picture. Just because you can physically do something, does not mean that you were original enough to do it first.

Understandably the exhibit above is (in my opinion) a failure of displaying modern art, since many of those ideas have been done over and over and over again, and for many, the points seems to be missed. With that said, I like the last picture (the neon sign) because I do believe it says a lot about our society (most likely unintentional since the rest of them are nothing special): It displays a rape fantasy where the woman is scared, but in the persons mind, actually turned on by the whole idea. The use of a neon sign is reminiscent of the open signs from a store front, almost giving the idea of freedom to commit such an action. Understandably this feels like a long stretch, but it is a reasonable explanation, that is, if the other mediocre signs were not there.

I agree with what many said above: Although I think it is tragic that many of MacBain's previous acquaintances and friends refuse to talk to her, I do not believe she should be surprised. Given her previous position, this is an extremely sensitive subject to broach, something she could have done better. What bothered me so much was that instead of politely resigning, she first went to a large convention and made the announcement (arguably an inappropriate one) before telling her congregation that she was closed to. I am all for people being honest about who they are, and do think she should have explained to her congregation that she was having difficulty with her faith, however she could have been more sensitive about it.

With all that in mind, this article reminded me of a wonderful book called As A Driven Leaf, which is about a Rabbi during the Roman Occupation of Judea integrating and losing his faith. It is really worth reading if you are interested.

So I did some further research and found that suicide rates in Lithuania are much higher, especially for men, with an average of 61.3 men per 100,000. It really amazes me because no articles really discuss the cause, but rather state that the phenomenon happens.

Was just about to submit this. Really amazing article that brings up a lot of moral questions regarding pirating, distractions for our aging population, and also the importance of allowing soldiers to reconnect to home. Beyond just family, we forget that many of our soldiers feel a strong disconnect with home for just the basic reasons: missing out on movies, current events, tech, etc.

Although soldiers may be away for only a few months, I could not help thinking about how their disconnect from society was very similar to those of inmates, some of which have been locked up before personal computers became popular. Although it is much easier (from a separation standpoint) for soldiers to integrate back to society, that disconnect , especially when talking to family members, can be very harmful for their psyche.

Although I think it is great that the MPAA sends over reel to reel movies for soldiers to watch as a group, however Mr. Strachman is giving army personnel so much more by allowing them to watch movies over and over again, and when they feel the most comfortable.
