She was way hotter, but news flash, some women are less attractive as they get older, especially in Hollywood.

Also, she'll never be hotter than she was in Hackers.

I want to run an All Flesh Must be Eaten campaign for some zombie lovers. Do you have any tips/ideas for a starting GM? by VeggieLoverin rpg

[–]JoeCoT 1 point2 points ago

It was more of a question of what stuff you have for the purposes of creative solutions. Like if you got into a bind, how did you use the common stuff you had on you to get out of it. In order to do that, it helps to enumerate everything you have before hand.

I'll second the other suggestion of using the all flesh setting and using a better system.

When one of my local STs ran all flesh, at the beginning of the game he'd have us list out everything our characters owned. flash lights, guns, pieces of cloth, everything. If it was unreasonable, it got removed. Otherwise, that's pretty much all we had access to the whole game, unless we scrounged for something in the wild.

How Serious a Problem is Piracy for RPG Developers? by PolarFrostyin rpg

[–]JoeCoT 4 points5 points ago

One of the things I will note is that for a long time there White Wolf just plain released too many books. Fans are completionist, and to buy every white wolf book is a very expensive affair. As well, frankly, not every book is good. Buying a book that you find otherwise uninteresting to read 3 pages of continuing fiction isn't attractive. Buying a book of bloodlines to find out that 3/4 of them stink doesn't make for happy costumers. So I generally pirate the PDF first, then buy the hardcover later if I like it and find it useful.

I've downloaded oodles of White Wolf books over the years, both old and new world. But I also have 2 bookshelves of nothing but White Wolf books (including every clan and covenant Requiem book, and every source book for New World games), and have around 10 more in the mail this week. I paid 100 bucks for the V20 Masquerade book, and I pitched in $50 for the V20 Companion kickstarter.

However, I don't generally buy PDFs -- I think it is silly to have to pay for both the PDF and dead tree version of the same book. And if I'm unsure of the book, I'll pirate the PDF. If only 3 pages of the book are actually worthwhile, I don't buy it. If I have a new player considering playing one of my WW games -- for the first, and possibly the only time -- I send them the pdf; I don't make them come over to read it, or expect them to pay to buy it.

White Wolf's my personal favorite RPG company. If I win the lottery, I'll pay for every PDF (and probably just buy the company outright). But while I've not bought every book they've ever produced, I think I've been fair by them. I think the reduction in the company has more to do with them not publishing many books these days (since sales dropped with NWoD, and they ran out of NWoD books to print), and less to do with me not paying for Bloodlines: The Supplimenting, or Changeling: That Short Period In The Beginning of the Winter Where It's Sometimes Snowing and Sometimes Warm Enough to Not Wear a Jacket.

This is why I generally refrain from hooking up with girls that have been drinking. If I didn't think they liked me when they were sober, I usually turn them down. I know people are usually dm;hs, but I don't like being people's regrets.

So you didn't like the Arya-Tywin interaction?

It's amusing at times, yes.

or the great (and unexpected in a good way) killing of the 13? (actually 11 guys, who until now in the books haven't do nothing of importance)

No, I didn't enjoy that at all.

Are you completely sure they have cut the Reeds and Victarion? Just because the aren't in this season doesn't mean they have been cut.

I'd really like to see them explain away their disappearance from several important scenes.

Cleos Frey? Is he in the show? They killed Alton Lannister, a different character (And Cleos Frey died in the books too)

No, Cleos Frey is Alton Lannister. They just renamed him because they didn't feel like explaining the connection to the Freys. He dies in the books, but much later.

Finally just a note, Dagmer never mentioned his last name. If you forget for a minute the dagmer from the books you would find Dagmer's character very interesting.

I do find Dagmer interesting, but pushing the impetus off of Theon and onto Dagmer fucks up Theon's characterization.

Jon's Made A Huge Mistake (Spoiler s2e07) by karanjin gameofthrones

[–]JoeCoT 0 points1 point ago

Watch the scene again. Dagmer plants the idea in his head. In the book Theon comes up with it and has to convince Dagmer to go along with it.

In the books Balon sends three people to the main land: Aasha (Yasha or something in the show), Theon, and Victarion. Victarion leads the Greyjoy fleet. The show completely cut him out of that conversation, and he's kind of a big deal later, so.... yeah.

And the kidnapping of the Dragons? And the killing of the 13? And cutting out the Reeds? And Victarion? Killing Cleos Frey? Having Cleftjaw suggest to Theon that he take winterfell, instead of Theon pushing him into it? And Arya being Tywin's cup bearer?

At every step they screw up characterizations, and differ wildly from the books. For one, I don't think Jon Snow's characterization is redeemable at this point, and the benny hill antics with Ygritte were wholly unnecessary.

in the book Ghost has to be left behind at one point, because he can't make it over a steep climb. He comes back quickly, though.

In this, though, who the fuck knows, because none of this happens. He lets her go instead of cutting her head off, and then goes back to half-hand. Everything in this scene is just part of the show leaving orbit at escape velocity.

OkCedditors, what would your completely, brutally honest profile look like? by okcexperimentorin OkCupid

[–]JoeCoT 2 points3 points ago

My self-summary: I'm an overweight computer programmer and LARPer.

What I’m doing with my life: Drinking with redditors, playing table top RPGs, and LARPing. Mostly LARPing, a hell of a lot. like 5 or 6 games a month.

Interests: The internet, being an elitist, LARPing, video games, books. I’m really good at: LARPing, herding cats, telling people they're full of shit, being judgmental.

The first things people usually notice about me: I'm overweight, I bring up LARPing way too much (mostly because I have nothing else to talk about)

On a typical Friday night I am: Wondering why I have stuff to do every other night of the week, but not Friday. Friday plans are always doomed to fail.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit: I have almost 0 willpower or motivation to do anything to improve myself. I can't get myself up early enough before work to exercise, after I get home from work I'm going out, or don't want to do anything at all. I work an hour away from home, but I don't have the motivation to look for something closer. Since my ex and I broke up last year, I've done everything in my power to not be alone at any point in time. I have a roommate that pays no rent, just so I'm not alone in my house all the time.

You should message me if: You should message me if you want to role play a whole hell of a lot (or put up with me when I do), and meet a whole bunch of geeky quirky people. [that part is a direct quote from my profile]. That plus drink with people I don't necessarily even like very much is really all I do. The whole LARP group rests on my back, so if you try to get between me and my LARPing you'll be out the door in about 30 seconds. Give me something to do on a Friday night. We don't even need to be in a relationship, let's just hang out and hook up every once in a while.

As a daily taxi rider, maybe you should consider sucking up the 2.50 you'll be paying per day. Or consider using public transport, or a bike, or your own feet. Or consider being less self-righteous.

Taxis are for quickly heading back to your place after a night of drinking when you have company. For everything else, there's Septa.

I have a confession to make...I love unity. by 0xnakin Ubuntu

[–]JoeCoT 7 points8 points ago

True for 12.04, before now it was too buggy and unstable to even try for an extended period. Now it's stable enough to actually use.

On my laptop, I use Unity 2D, and it worked fine out of the box. No changes needed, except the sensitivity on the launcher autohide.

On my desktop at work, it required significant changes.

By default, when you use two monitors, it puts a launcher menu on each monitor. And when moving the mouse between monitors, it stops the mouse at the edge of the screen. To alleviate this, I had to:

  1. turn off the second moniter's launcher in Appearance settings
  2. in gconf-editor, turn off stop_velocity and overcome_pressure, under apps-> compiz-1 -> plugins -> unityshell -> screen0 -> options
  3. because I had turned off the stop_velocity and overcome_pressure, I needed to disable autohide of the launcher menu, so it's on permanently on my left monitor.

I also had the issue of the new shortcuts conflicting with my current shortcuts. I use ctrl + alt + num keys to switch between my 9 workspaces, and compiz broke that. after installing compizconfig, I was able to turn off the grid plugin, which fixed that issue.

Finally, the last problem was that I was using programs previously that weren't in the application menu. They wouldn't show up in the launcher while running, or would show up with no icon. I created launcher shortcuts by making desktop shortcuts in ~/.local/share/applications, with the command and icon I wanted. Then I would run the shortcut, and pin it in the launcher.

Overall, it took no hassle at all for home use, but several hours of tinkering to be functional for work use. but after the tinkering, I'm actually really happy with the result. Out of the box, though, it was unusable for work.
