Linux Mint 13 “Maya” released! by nimoovin linux

[–]JoCoLaRedux 3 points4 points ago

Really, the vast majority of stuff we all search for can be found on any major search provider, and most browsers have options for changing the default search and adding others. The griping about Mint's default search that seems to accompany every new release is the stuff of /r/fossworldproblems.

Oddly enough, it takes roughly 80 hours to pour LiquiGlide out of a LiquiGlide bottle.

The Supreme Court has refused to take up a Boston University student's constitutional challenge to a $675,000 penalty for illegally downloading 30 songs and sharing them on the Internet. by EthicalReasoningin technology

[–]JoCoLaRedux -2 points-1 points ago

Well, those figures use actual math, not RIAA legal math, which probably goes something like: The songs cost a dollar each, multiplied by X number of other people the defendant shared them with over a P2P network, plus some of these songs were never released as singles, so you would have had to buy the entire album to obtain them, so we'll actually count those songs as being worth 17$ each...

Chrome always felt sorta sterile and overly-corporate to me.

Easily one of the best albums of the 90's.

And the inside cover, probably intended as a big Fuck you to PETA over the stink they made over the fate of the fish at the end of the Epic video.

It looks like a band that's trying really hard to look like they're not trying hard.

From a painting by Malcolm Bucknall. They used Bucknall's work for a couple other covers, too

Good blog entry about Bucknall:

The Art of Malcolm Bucknall: I didn’t know bears had such nice boobs, which features a righteous portrait he did of Willie Nelson.

Who is your favorite character? Why? by Joelpherin comicbooks

As an Irish, former alter boy turned cripple (spent the better part of a decade on sticks), Daredevil definitely resonated with me.

Also, I get all the ladies, too ;)

Silver Surfer. He comes into power at great personal expense, is a noble, poetic, philosophical fallen angel who wanders alone through the universe, views things in contrast to the Grand Scheme of Things, and treasures life even though he's often disappointed by it.

What was your first experience listening to BoC like? by trennerdiosin boardsofcanada

[–]JoCoLaRedux 1 point2 points ago

Over a decade or so ago, Matador Records released a 3 CD, tenth anniversary collection (even though they had only been around about 3-4 years at that point) that included cuts from bands that weren't even on their label, and one of them was Roygbiv. It was this perfect piece of ear candy that I couldn't stop listening to, and lead me to pick up Music Has the Right to Children, which really opened me up to electronic music.

Yeah, I had enough friends who were into comic books growing up that I got exposed to some graphic novels here and there. I wasn't aware of the new 52, looks promising, though. Apparently I picked a good time to get into comics, seeing as how D.C is rebooting all those titles. Looks like everything is on presale, though, so I'll have to wait until November. Thanks for the heads up.

reddit, I've answered a lot your questions about being deaf, and I'd like you to return the favor. I have some questions about hearing. (Also, you can AMA about deafness) by Deafyin AskReddit

[–]JoCoLaRedux 0 points1 point ago

I had to learn to write at an early age so I'm more proficient with written english than a lot of deaf people, some of us really don't read well.

I worked with a deaf guy who was a voracious reader, but told me he was a rarity because nobody else in the deaf community reads. I was surprised to find that out. I guess I've always viewed deaf people as being somewhat isolated from the mainstream, and figured they'd be eager to embrace any medium that might bridge that gap.
