Does New Jersey's Playoff Run Drastically Affect the Parise Sweepstakes? by theleaferfanin hockey

[–]Jellybagel 0 points1 point ago

I was not aware of that. Thanks :D

If the D can do good work, then no doubt they can replicate success with another goalie. They obviously have a good core, the system just may need some tweaking when Brodeur steps down.

This run certainly helps the devils keep Parise, but nothing is certain as of yet.

Does New Jersey's Playoff Run Drastically Affect the Parise Sweepstakes? by theleaferfanin hockey

[–]Jellybagel 0 points1 point ago

IIRC Parise was looking to go to a contender. While NJ is just that this year, i'm not sure it's the best place for him to sign if he wants to continue being on a contender.

A large part of NJ's system is Brodeur. He's getting older, and while he has been playing very well despite his age, it will begin to affect him going forward. When he does retire, I'm not sure it's going to be easy replacing such a large and important part of the team. I'm not familiar with NJ's prospect pool, so i don't know if they have someone waiting in the wings.

If Parise wanted year in-year out playoffs, I'm not sure the devils are the best choice going forward. If I'm wrong about the devils system, somebody please let me know

Can somebody explain salary cap stuff to me please? by minecrafterambestenin hockey

[–]Jellybagel 2 points3 points ago

Also, if the player is over 35, their contract counts regardless if they play or not.

That's only if they retire. They can go on LTIR and their cap hit will not count against the team.

Can't fault Lundqvist... he tried to sell it. by puddy29in hockey

[–]Jellybagel 35 points36 points ago

It looks like a mix of lundqvist repositioning himself in anticipation of being hit, and Poni pushing Henrik's knee when stopping. I don't think Lundqvist dove or that Poni charged him, seems to just be a little coincidence.

The reason I don't like the new shot-blocking trend, might help you realize it as well. by matt420therosein hockey

[–]Jellybagel 1 point2 points ago

So your argument is that player blocking shots robs the viewer of enjoyment of the game because they get less interact between the goalie and the shooter, thereby reducing the amount of "omg!" moments?

I'd argue that if this were the case, the shots wouldn't be anywhere near the totals their at (NJD had 27, NYR had 25 tonight). Furthermore, if it turned NYR into the defensive juggernaut that you seem to suggest such a system would, NYR would not have needed 7 games to beat WSH and OTT.

If anything, I feel as though it forces players to play better. You can't just dump shots on net and hope they sneak by, because there's going to be bodies in the way. Teams will have to work to create scoring chances and strategize according to the situation. I'm not sure it's as detrimental you paint it to be.

Mike Smith's slash on Dustin Brown. How is this a dive? by another_handlein hockey

The guys on TSN were talking about how the L.A. Kings were able to get into Smith's head by chirpin' at him in game 1.

Looks like it worked again.

Donald Fehr: NHL expansion is in the cards [translated] by kmadin hockey

[–]Jellybagel 0 points1 point ago

Do you think it could be maintained long term though? I know there was a lot of concern over the Winnipeg "honeymoon" if you will. Granted, the economic situation is different now for Winnpeg and Québec, but it's not something that should (or would) be rushed in to. I'd just hate to see teams move again.

[–]Jellybagel 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't it be better to make sure the majority of teams are stable and financially viable before expanding? it seems like a few markets (both current and potential) are too much of a crap shoot. It might be a better idea to fix current problems than to add potential new ones.

that's how they get their forecheck going. Unfortunately for the Flyers, as natepilling pointed out, Brodeur was on it.
