TROPHY CASE

Whoever gets to go home, I envy you. I will miss you since I won't be making it this year. Here is me at exodus. See you in 2013! by chemellein BurningMan

That picture made me really, really wistful.

Sorry you won't make it this year. Hopefully the ticket situation will get resolved next time around.

Tennessee Man loses $22,000 to cops. No charges filed, no arrest made. "If somebody told me this happened to them, I absolutely would not believe this could happen in America." That was the reaction of a New Jersey man who found out just how risky it can be to carry cash through Tennessee. by Mind_Virusin politics

How exactly is it going to percolate to the police if you don't?

Don't patronize local businesses -> Tell them why -> Let them engage with their police to eliminate the problem.

What's your solution?

Everyone says this, but I don't know why. If you want to push yourself and be scientific in measuring your results, the treadmill is significantly better than running outside.

My sense of personal responsibility says you should learn to keep your mouth shut, and if you can't you need to deal with the consequences.

If you go sky-diving, you expect there's a possibility that you're going to get hurt or killed. It you poke a hornets nest, you should expect to get stung. If you provoke a fight with someone bigger, stronger, and meaner than you, should expect to get hurt.

"and either said or did something to incite Martin to attack him"

You say it's presumptuous and then pointed out several possible scenarios that supported it. You have to take the side that either A) Zimmerman did something to provoke a confrontation or B) Martin attacked him for no reason whatsoever.

I would say it's 95%/5% split though. That's a guess, but I would have to say that unless Martin was literally attacking everyone he came across that night because he was straight-up crazy, Zimmerman did something that provoked it, questions of legality aside.

Despite what a lot of assholes in this thread think, I'm more interested in seeing this play out legally and socially than I am in taking sides. I think there plausibility in many directions at this point, but I doubt we'll ever know what really happened because as I said Zimmerman has no incentive to present any information that puts him in a negative light, Martin is dead and can't tell his side of the story, and any witnesses at this are most likely tainted by bias because of media coverage.

This is the problem, you can't take Zimmermans story at face value. Anyone will lie if they think the alternative is worse. It's also gotten to the point where so many people are familiar with and have formed opinions of the case that any new forthcoming witnesses are unreliable and probably biased.

It's basically unresolvable at this point. One one hand, a murderer may walk away after killing a kid during a fight he provoked. On the other hand, a guy who (in my opinion) is irresponsible got in over his head and killed a kid and will be free based on the law of Florida.

Given that Zimmerman left his car (a way to escape/avoid danger) and then followed/confronted Martin and either said or did something to incite Martin to attack him, then didn't run away (escaping danger) or back to his car (to escape danger), doesn't Zimmerman lose the benefit of Stand Your Ground according to the clause you specify?

I agree with you up to a point. If there is no precedent in Florida that matches this situation and resulted in criminals talking, harassment, assault , etc charges then legally you are correct.

My own sense of rationalism and personal responsibility says don't start harassing someone if you don't want trouble. But that's an opinion.

Did Zimmerman follow this kid. Did he have a gun? Was it at night? The facts say yes. Was the kid doing anything that warranted being followed? From what I've read no, but I'm willing to put that in a gray area.

Martin may have had a history of bad behavior at school, but Zimmerman had a history of violence as an adult.

Net loss to Zimmerman on that angle.

You have no idea what started the physical altercation. Unless there is proof that Martin was punching every one he came across that might, why don't you stop speculating.

Elizabeth Warren urges supporters to press Congress to pass a new Glass-Steagall law that would separate “high-risk investment banks” from more traditional banking. “It would allow Wall Street to take risks, but not by dipping into the life savings and retirement accounts of regular people,” by AdamVR4in politics

If the banks were perfectly transparent with their investments and that information was easily available to consumers, perhaps with an indication of potential outcomes of the type of investments the banks were making, then yes, maybe more people would.

It is the reality of politics and a result of the culture of the United States. There is a big marketing game and the people who play it well have learned how to appeal to our base emotions to further their agenda. If you disagree with that agenda, it's very hard to take the high road, and it will cost you so much more to regain lost ground than to put a line in the sand and refuse to move it.
