what's the answer to the question?

Full time student, unemployed, with no money, no job, living with parents...whats the best path towards financial independence? (Canadian) by bertweazein financialindependence

[–]J-Appleseed -1 points0 points ago

FI in 1 year is difficult in your situation. Unless you start a website/blog that perpetually pays your living expenses.

If that's not possible, do this:

1.Take an educational path that will lead to a well-paying job.

2.Work hard during the summer and save enough to pay the following year's tuition

3.Get a job on campus to pay your living expenses during the school year.

4.Be frugal.

5.Get a good job out of university.

We all save but what does PF splurge on? by [deleted]in personalfinance

[–]J-Appleseed 0 points1 point ago

Nice clothes for work. I rationalize by saying it's an investment-- dressing for the job I want, not the job I have, etc.

But I still only buy things on sale. I have to get a deal on everything I buy. Whether it's habit or compulsion, it's the way I am now.

Just a reminder about ticks... by Ialmostthewholepostin VictoriaBC

[–]J-Appleseed 1 point2 points ago

Last year around this time I was landscaping in a garden and felt the tiniest discomfort on my arm. when i looked at the area i was scratching, i saw a tick just starting to get settled into my arm. it took a pocketknife to cut the bugger out.

ive persuaded myself to set aside 30mins each weekend to go over my finances. what should i do in this time? by JoolsFromCanonFodderin personalfinance

[–]J-Appleseed 14 points15 points ago

  1. pay bills
  2. examine expenses by category & individual outlays
  3. think of ways to reduce expenses
  4. examine income
  5. think of ways to increase income
  6. profit!

How can sperm whales survive at depths 12x that of modern nuclear submarines? by Valexannisin askscience

[–]J-Appleseed 0 points1 point ago

not likely. whales stink to high hell. they are heavily invested with oil. their "blubber" layer is all mixed up with ligaments. It would probably be like extremely marbled steak with 10x the fat and 100x the disgusting oil.

They empty their lungs and carry oxygen in their muscle via myoglobin. Its the same stuff that makes the dark turkey meat dark.

Their bones are dissociated in many parts, allowing them to compress. Notably the sacrum and the 'digits' of the flippers.

Does anybody have good study spots on campus they can share? by strangefuturein uvic

[–]J-Appleseed 1 point2 points ago

i'm only giving up my secret spots because i'm nearly done at uvic. please enjoy responsibly.

the indigenous lounge in the new first nations house is awesome. brand new building, comfy seating, and if it's raining you get to watch a waterfall flow past the window.

the upper floors of clearihue have these seminar rooms on the north wing (forget if it's C or D wing) which are hardly ever used. great secluded spaces.

depending on the time of day, the CALL facility in the basement of clearihue is a great spot.

Best place for poutine and other Eastern cuisine? by TheNapoleonOfRedditin VictoriaBC

I guess i just like melty cheese on my fries with gravy. A&W makes a good-enough for me poutine too!

[–]J-Appleseed -3 points-2 points ago

I know nothing of authentic montreal poutine, but I don't like la belle patate. The gravy sucks, and is never hot enough to melt the curds. I have been there a few times and was never impressed.

For sheer value and artery-clogging goodness, Costco is king. For $5 you get a HUGE poutine with piping hot gravy, melty curds, and sweet-coated fries.

The autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is surprisingly relevant today. He talks about learning a trade, being industrious, making impressions on people, identifying needs, filling them, etc.

All good stuff. Very inspiring.
