Is CVS Pharmacy Ripping You Off With Your Prescriptions? by cboudetin YouShouldKnow

[–]Itkovan 5 points6 points ago

To be successful in social media you need to have bite sized chunks people can digest, and then more details available for those who want to look. I would focus on this bit (maybe bold or italicize it?):

This means that if I had gone to CVS to fill the prescription (a total of 270 capsules, 90 caps X 3 refills) I would have paid $15 X 9 (they only gave me 30 at a time) or $135, while at the other pharmacy I would only pay $30. I called CVS and asked for an explanation, but they were unable to provide one for me.

The message would also be much clearer if you were focusing on either CVS or insurance companies. If you compared CVS vs another company then attack CVS, but in this case you should probably leave them out of it, and instead frame it as a "YSK" regarding filling prescriptions with and without insurance.

I guess my university pays the professors well.. by startswithwillin Autos

I mostly agree with you. However, please remember what you consider silly or as "throwing money away" is not to everyone.

I make a conscious decision almost every day NOT to live like a miser. I am not my bank account. I spend money in what I consider to be a wise manner, but purposefully allow myself to spend on "unnecessary" items sometimes. My goal in life is to be happy, both now and in retirement. I will not sacrifice one for the other, and this does not automatically make my decisions "silly." Only subjectively good.

I am by no means suggesting my choices are the best choices - my guess is you and your wife greatly enjoy being frugal. More power to ya.

We don't have smart banks that I'm aware of, but we do have smart credit unions.

At least one. My wife is a loan officer for a very large CU and their lending guidelines are notoriously stingy. On the flip side, they weren't affected by the mortgage crisis AT ALL.

(Actually, that's not strictly true, they had to pay $75m to bail out less-wise credit unions. A fact which didn't really affect me but still pisses me off.)

CHOSIGT cheese grater, 4.99$. Actually, you all probably already have this. by timmytimtimshabaduin BuyItForLife

[–]Itkovan 2 points3 points ago

I have one of these and it is completely awesome. I don't know about super hard cheese like RichardHerold mentions but it does fine with anything I've ever used it for. My .02 is it makes traditional cheese graters seem like a horrible idea - being able to press down instead of sideways makes all the difference in the world.

A thank you to tax-payers from a receiver of disability. by AdjectiveAdverbin self

Thank you for even thinking to say thank you in the first place.

Like others here, I am so much happier thinking about people like you receiving my money than funding wars or being send as "aid" to financially healthy countries like Israel. Makes it a little easier to write that massive check every quarter.

Masters and Johnson maintain 75% of heterosexuals prefer the lateral coital position after trying it. (That % is not externally verified)

It's not mind blowing but it is a pretty good position. Both partners have some control and there are no high pressure points to fatigue.

What's something you wish you had known when you took up photography? by DanishDudein photography

[–]Itkovan 0 points1 point ago

Since you are specifically asking what I wish I had known and not for general advice, I wish I knew exactly how much I would be into photography.

Which turns out to be "enough to appreciate the good shit and know what it takes to get a great shot, but don't care enough to be there - the right place at the right time."

I also wish I knew how much the size of the sensor affected depth of field as well as the zoom effect. I knew of the crop zoom factor but didn't know how much I'd care. I frequently find myself wishing I could get further back in situation where it's not possible to do so.

My ideal setup with cost taken into consideration would be full frame with a top of the line zoom lens, plus external flash and assorted goodies (two huge+fast cards, filters, etc.)

[–]Itkovan 1 point2 points ago

I've done around a 100mph and occasionally - given the right situation and the right car - way over in many vehicles. It's phenomenal how different they can feel.

Some cars can't track straight and just generally feel unstable. Other cars are solid as a rock. Instead of being scary it just feels very, very fast. Your mind still knows it's incredibly risky but it's not because of the car itself.

[–]Itkovan 1 point2 points ago

Absolutely. Our society entirely focuses on speeding and drunk driving as the cause of accidents. More recently texting and general cell phone use. Nowhere is PAYING ATTENTION emphasized, only going slow + the above. Plus our driving tests are a fucking joke.

The result is paying attention while driving is a secondary and people do the fucking craziest shit, mostly without even realizing it.

[–]Itkovan 1 point2 points ago

Oh I dunno, the M5 (205mph) looks like a standard 4 door car to your average joe.

(I don't understand how you could NOT tell it apart, but that's probably common among anyone subscribing to this subreddit.)

edit: that list is a little old too. the veyron ss hit 267.856 mph quite some time ago.

Does marriage really make people happier? Study finds few well-being advantages to marriage over cohabitation by kiowabluein science

[–]Itkovan 1 point2 points ago

I can see whomever I damn well please on my death bed.

I'm entirely behind this effort. But wife_of_bmacnz has a point - until you or someone else changes these policies (at least in the US) being married currently has the advantage of being able to be with your loved one in any hospital. I have a relative who is lesbian and it is absolutely criminal she might not be able to see her partner on her deathbed.

[–]Itkovan 5 points6 points ago

Well put. Madly in love = lust, not love. I upvoted you and wildmachines as everything else he said was absolutely true. Marriage should be able love and partnership. Not about what society thinks you should do, what you do when you don't know where else to take your relationship, or hell, I've even had a friend who got married because him and his girlfriend were always one upping each other. So naturally he had to propose in a wild way after about half a year (idiot.)

Marriages SHOULD have lust but it should not be the primary bond between you.

I really respect Amazon for having the same interface it has had for a while. by DoctorStevein self

When I search for an exact model number that model is what I want to buy, not something similar.

I really respect Amazon for having the same interface it has had for a while. by DoctorStevein self

[–]Itkovan 5 points6 points ago

What they're missing is metadata tools and clear separate of the horizontal sections. Why? Because the first is a monumental undertaking for a company the size of Amazon especially considering all the third party sellers, and the second is because they don't want people to skip over sections. If it's all jumbled together they have to look around.

As warm and fuzzy as their customer service is Amazon is still a business. Their Certified Clusterfuck Interface™ works well enough to make oodles of money with, so I don't blame them for not changing. Still sucks though.

I really respect Amazon for having the same interface it has had for a while. by DoctorStevein self

[–]Itkovan 7 points8 points ago

Naw he's right, Amazon metadata and search tools are crap. I find what I want with google or others first and then paste the model number into Amazon. Even then I have to double check that number as Amazon's search will sometimes bring up an approximate match (yes even with model number) which is not good enough.

It's a testament to their customer service that I use and still highly recommend them.

I cannot understand how it could be so light. I mean water weighs around 8 1/3 lbs per gallon and even a ho-hum above ground backyard swimming pool holds several thousand gallons.

Obviously they're trying to keep the tank size to a minimum and the whale would displace a huge amount of water, but whales aren't exactly featherweights themselves.

Printing Calibration... by LunchBox42in photography

[–]Itkovan 0 points1 point ago

You are dealing with two entirely different mediums for viewing the photos, one transmissive and one reflective. Although you will never eliminate this at least try to minimize differences. For example use a lightbox with the same temperature light your monitor is using.

I have a client who regularly sent out printed work to be put on display, I calibrated his system end to end using an i1 system and we would proof using a 5000K lightbox. After a tiny bit of tweaking the pictures would absolutely perfect. Please note the print did look darker than the screen until we put it under the 5000K light. You can kind of simulate this by using the sun (which can differ but generally middle of the day is 6500K.) Could probably even do it on the cheap using hardware store fluorescent tubes rated at your goal temp.

Side note, it was incredible how quickly this gifted photographer could see color differences. I could see differences his assistant could not but it took me a minute or two of glancing back and forth. I shit you not he'd stroll into the room look at one, look at the other, "a bit too red on that one." And he was right. Yet also one of the most humble men I've ever met.

Hey, you with the digital camera! by mcanerinin YouShouldKnow

[–]Itkovan 0 points1 point ago

I looked into this fairly seriously a while ago. Fire safes rated for magnetic media are very expensive and tend to have very low "actual exposure to fire" times. Plus there is no protection against theft, plus real problem is short of an IT staff, relying on humans to backup regularly just. doesn't. happen.

With virtually any online backup solution a meticulous, precise, and reliable computer handles regular backups. So that the backups are actually worth having when you need them.

[–]Itkovan 1 point2 points ago

1Mb up isn't that bad. Shit I have a lot more bandwidth than that and it still took two months. Of course I capped it and I was transferring half a TB, but still.

Automated offsite backup is worth it - IF you care about your data. If you don't care if you lose pictures/email/docs/whatever then obviously don't bother.

Hey, you with the digital camera! by mcanerinin YouShouldKnow

[–]Itkovan 1 point2 points ago

The answer is to use both. Local drives for protection against the most likely items to fail: your hard drive(s). Offsite protection for those truly "oh shit" days.
