Too Hot for TED: Income Inequality — TED’s organizers recently decided one idea was too controversial to spread: the notion that widening income inequality is a bad thing for America, and that as a result, the rich should pay more in taxes by CroydonCin politics

Having worked at a startup (working still but we're no longer a startup), I can say that it's completely nerve-wreacking. Making huge gambles, betting the company on some random idea or chance. Also, minor decisions early on turn out to be major game-changes later.

It's also what makes the experience exhilarating, making you look back at the "early days" with nostalgia and fondness. A lot of VC's choose to forever chase and relive this experience.

You connect and socialize with some of the richest, most educated and well connected individuals on the planet. If you have a startup company or are in need of seed capital this sort of event is a great way for you to make first contact and socialize.

Submitting an investment offer to your newfound connections a couple of weeks or months after the first contact would yield better results than just contacting these people out of nowhere.

Anyone else see the earth harp on America's got talent? I hope they go somewhere with this. Simply remarkable. by TheyCallMeTomSawyerin videos

Wouldn't it still be pretentious to suggest that you as an individual would be somehow more original than others or that your work is more unique and original than that made by others?

You don't just call yourself and your work original.

While he praised him, he did not miss the opportunity to praise himself. "I made my career with originality". What a prick.

Way more than twice, if you count in the Roman Republic, basically the same country with the same borders.

USA - 236 years

Roman Republic - 482 years

Roman Empire - 503 years

So that's more than four times as much.

Egypt lasted continuously for nearly 3000 years.

TIL Steve Jobs was infamous for parking his Mercedes in handicap parking spots. He also didn't use license plates. by sammmymanthain todayilearned

[–]Ithrazel 315 points316 points ago

He changed his car for an identical car every six months. By Californian law, you only have to get new plates after six months of ownership.

For a grown man to go through shenanigans like that just to maintain his "different" status, failry daft imho.
