How do I achieve this colored-haze effect in Lightroom? by duysurfingin postprocessing

[–]Imperial476 0 points1 point ago

Probably referring to desaturating the black levels based on the waveforms. When you desaturate the blacks while watching the waveforms, they lift from 0 up to higher numbers yielding a less contrasty look. The opposite would be to "crush" the blacks.

Does Anybody Know What Camera This Guy's Using? by zuckertalertin videography

Is that Haskell Wexler? I got to interview him for a documentary I worked on back in 2008. He is really an amazing guy. The camera appears to be the Sony HDR-CX700.

People following trends just because it happens to be cool at that moment is pretty lame, but labeling someone a hipster because they happen to be into film photography is equally lame. I'm not really sure how anything I said before was "hipster" at all.

Do you know what 120 film is? Most people don't anymore. It is difficult to find a place to get it processed at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, most popular film processing places such as walmart don't really process film at all anymore. If they do, they only process c41 35mm and disregard all other formats because of the expense involved in keeping the machinery to process other formats.

When will people stop talking about hipsters? Just let people be people.

Ooops, busted? by Uitklapstoelin funny

I am just talking about running the cable and placing the transmitter. On any decent production, the mic will be placed by the sound person especially with sensitive lavs.

Except that more often than not the women end up doing this themselves. I have only seen female talent allow the sound guys to run the mic like this a couple of times. Still a cool job though.

Large, soft sources such as a soft box or a a light bounced off the wall (assuming they were white) for that first interior. It seems that the room may have been somewhat small from what I remember, so using soft sources would help to minimize cast shadows. This would also be most flattering for the woman as well. You may have to gel to accommodate for the mix of color temperatures assuming you plan to use the mirror lights as practicals.

The stage scene could be a little more dramatic. He is on stage so don't be afraid to hit him with bright, hard lights. Cast shadows and define the subject.

What that means is that there is no contrast on the faces. There is no shadow to add depth and dimension on the actors' faces. Both interiors look as though they were shot with the available lights in the room especially the first one with the girl. She has a slight color cast to her skin tones which looks as though she was lit with fluorescents. Overhead fluos tend to be very flat.

Film degree? by GIJesusin Filmmakers

[–]Imperial476 1 point2 points ago

The majority of people will come in and immediately tell you not to go to film school - that you will waste your time and money, but that really depends on what you want to do and how you will finance your education. A cinema studies degree is very useful if you want to better understand the motivation and theories of filmmaking. That is useful in deepening your understanding of your own work. Also very useful if you want to write about film for instance as a critic. If you are able to obtain scholarships or grants, then you should definitely apply. However, if all you want to do is work in the film industry then you should trying getting an internship or work as a PA. It's hard work that is absolutely not glamorous, but when the job is done and you have been a part of something bigger than you, the feeling is unmatched in normal life.

There are some beautiful images throughout. I have a few critiques. The dutch angles really take away from the rest of the work. They aren't really prevalent, but they immediately took me out of the piece because they were not motivated. Second, and this is a matter of choice as a DP, your interiors are lit very flat. Again, this doesn't seem motivated so it comes off as a lack of effort. Other than that, great work.

I'm 17 years old and have had it with hoodies. How am I doing now? (Please excuse the dirty mirror!) by [deleted]in malefashionadvice

Paint shirt. When I was in kindergarten they made us bring one of our dad's shirts for painting class. It was meant to be messed up. Get an oversized shirt and wear it for that. Bonus if you paint your name on it in bubble paint.

A video I made consisting of 60+ YouTube videos edited together and set to some astounding music. It's 12 minutes. I'm curious what you folks will think. (A little NSFW + NSFL) by iamthewinnerin Filmmakers

[–]Imperial476 2 points3 points ago

It is a about 12 minutes of other people's videos edited to music. Might be called recontextualization, but I think it wasn't extremely successful in that respect. Good effort, OP, but this could be scaled back (i.e. cut it down quite a bit) and be more successful.

Anyone know anything about this "Owens Automatic MC 200mm F3.5" /w Nikon mount lens I found in an old shoebox? by corkthrowin photography

[–]Imperial476 0 points1 point ago

I have a very similar lens. They were inexpensive prosumer type lenses and were sold through outlets like Sears. From what I understand there were a bunch of brands that made the same lens, much like Rokinon and other different brands have their name on the same lens today.

What about searing? Caramelization on the outside is important for flavor.

Someone else seems to have down voted you, but everyone has different techniques. I'm curious as to why you wouldn't grill beef.
