I know that feel... by Narcofunkin WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Human__Being 0 points1 point ago

I've been reading Music, the Brain, and Ecstasy, by Robert Jourdain, and it's been excellent. It discusses music and our perception of it in several parts. He first discusses it as sound, then breaks the sounds down into tones, our musical building blocks. He shows how tones are built into melodies, and how melodies are arranged with rhythm.

Jourdain next discusses the composition, performance, listening and understanding of music by immersing the reader in the cognitive processes involved in each. I've found the topic of composition really interesting. I'm an aspiring composer and I'm eating up his descriptions of the composing habits of Schubart, who heard a constant stream of original music in his head, and Beethoven, a composer of deep structure who wrote all of his music in score, even pasting the pages of his notebook on the wall to see it all continuously. Jourdain finishes the book by exploring the ecstasy we feel when we listen to beautiful music.

It's a scientific and informative book, written with the luscious fluidity of poetry. Jourdain is a great writer.

Here's a list of other book on music cognition that might interest you. I'm personally trying to find a copy of "The War of Art".

Aphex Twin piano sheet music - "Flim", "Avril 14th", and more. by Human__Beingin MusicNotes

[–]Human__Being[S] 2 points3 points ago

The music itself is beautiful - Aphex Twin is widely considered the father of modern electronic music. Throughout his production he put out a few piano pieces that are, reflecting back, some of my favorite works of his.

Here is the song "Avril 14th", included in the sheet music.

I love Boards of Canada's style of piano. What advice can you give me in playing more like them? "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" for reference. by Human__Beingin piano

It's mysterious, calm, slow and sometimes a little discordant. But what's most remarkable is the mood it evokes. What is it about their playing that realizes this effect?

Discussion: What films for you are the most erotic/sensual? (And I don't mean the ones showing the most skin...) by bibsin ForeignMovies

[–]Human__Being 1 point2 points ago

It's not foreign, but I recently saw the 2002 remake of Solaris, and I was on the edge of my seat with bated breath during the romantic scenes, of which there are many. The story is a sci-fi psycho-drama that is surprising in its depth of emotion. A central theme of the film is the lost romance between the lead character and his wife. It ties in concepts such as "can you love someone that's only in your imagination"? And, when a loved one has died, are you sure that you remember them as they were?

Beautiful film. I really recommend it, if you haven't seen it.

What are your reading habits? by GuyMontagzin books

Hungry Ghosts is new to me, I like them a lot. Tycho has been one of my favorite musicians for years. His pastel music is still painted on my eyelids.

Here's some artists you would probably like:

Matryoshka [operatic glitchy post-rock]

Aphex Twin [euphoric ambient - I recommend the album "Selected Ambient Works 85-92"]

Floex [future jazz / glitch]

Bohren & der Club of Gore [noir jazz]

Motoro Faam [colorful, cascading post-rock]

Olafur Arnalds [neoclassical / pop]

Kashiwa Daisuke [post-rock / neoclassical / modern electronic] - this is a masterpiece, the most captivating and inspiring 35 minutes of my life.

Check out Tycho's albums "Past Is Prologue" and "Dive". The former has a washed-out, acoustic, pastoral mood, much like that BOC evokes. Tycho's later album is more emotional and mature.

You would also love the mysterious and intricate "Selected Ambient Works 85-92", by Aphex Twin.

I thought you must have been referring to a different BT than the one that produced This Binary Universe, until I opened the video and Timberlake's had BT's signature stutter. I see what you mean about it being ridiculously well-produced. It doesn't make the song bad, but it also doesn't make it better - it just makes it more and more textured.
