I work at a Ducati dealership. We received a few Panigales today.. by snorlax_ativein motorcycles

It's not exactly like there are Ducati dealerships everywhere. I don't live in Newport, but I bought my Diavel there, and I ride it every day!

Origins of Chinese characters by pon00050in ChineseLanguage

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

The oracle bones are how we now learn about the earliest known forms of Chinese writing. However, that does not mean that they are the 'original' objects they were written on. Those are simply the earliest known objects to have survived until now. It's worth mentioning that there is debate over the existence of Neolithic characters found in ancient Chinese pottery, which may even predate the oracle bones.

Question regarding Nissan 350Z Clutch Kits - Copper Mix vs. Non-Asbestos by SPDSKTRin Cartalk

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

From a quick google

The claim is that the "coppermix" version will slip less at high temperatures. I'm not sure what that means in practical terms, but I'd guess that this would not affect the majority of drivers out there.

Facebook, Zuckerberg sued over IPO by iamstandingbehindyouin technology

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

In my opinion, the lawsuits against Facebook and Zuckerberg are probably not going to go anywhere. The real interesting lawsuit is the one filed against NASDAQ for the mishandling of the IPO due to software glitches. Essentially, bids were being over-granted for some, resulting in some people receiving more than the expected number of shares, while others waited hours with their purchase 'locked in' while they watched the price slide down more and more, unable to cancel their orders.

How close do I need to be to a dealer? (new to motorcycles) by Waffleophagusin Ducati

Something worth taking into consideration -- complimentary Ducati roadside assistance is only valid if you have your bike serviced by an authorized Ducati dealership.

A question about cruiser seats (details inside). by hemmicw9in motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

I've got 3 saddles for my 2004 Sportster XL1200 Roadster

  • Stock - total garbage. Stiff and uncomfortable. Even worse for the pillion
  • Mustang solo - Brilliant. I can ride all day long on this one
  • HD Sundowner - VERY close to the Mustang, but pushes you a big closer to the tank. A reasonable compromise for two-up riding.

I'm willing to bet you're going to tell me both the Mustang and Sundowner are out of your budget :P

How do I get my bike to the DMV to take the riding test for my license? by _zshin motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 3 points4 points ago

You take the written test first to get your learner's permit. This allows you to legally ride on the street. Which is how you are supposed to be able to practice to be able to pass the skills test at the DMV.

What you should do instead: Sign up for MSF.

Potential Track Car Ideas? by fasteddie4000in Cartalk

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

It depends on what your goal is. Track days? Any car will do. Competing in NASA / SCCA racing? You'd better start researching the different car classes and learning which cars will give you a good bang for the buck to be competitive.

Correct part name - wheel well plugs? by turlianin Cartalk

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

They're referred to as "clips", and they're $1.14 or $2.92 depending on whether you need the small or big one.

I order most of my Subaru parts online from Heuberger as they beat everyone else's prices by a fair margin, especially my local dealerships. They charge $12 shipping regardless of how much or how little you order, so stock up on oil filters, air filters, fluids, etc to make it worth your while.

Anyways, the parts you need are here on this diagram.

Just an FYI. Logitech has a 3-year warranty on most of their products. I had the same thing happen to my Performance MX after a year and a half. Logitech sent me a brand new one in retail packaging free of charge! I didn't even have to send the old one back!

2004 Handai Santa Fe speedometer not working. Replaced to sensors. Need help. by yourprincecharmingin Cartalk

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

Wheel speed sensors are used by the ABS. RPM's are determined by the crank position sensor, which measures crank speed. The speedometer reading comes from the VSS, which typically measures the final drive gear inside the transmission.

2004 Handai Santa Fe speedometer not working. Replaced to sensors. Need help. by yourprincecharmingin Cartalk

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

Before spending more money on sensors, and time replacing them, can you get your hands on an OBD2 diagnostic tool, to see if the sensors are actually reporting anything? There's always a chance that the sensors are fine (really, the only one that has anything to do with reporting vehicle speed is the VSS, as agravain mentioned), but it could be a problem with the gauge itself, like a fuse, loose wire, etc.

Many cars have a drum used for parking brakes, even if it's 4-wheel disk brakes. My STI does. My old Honda Civic did not.

Do you do your own maintenance? Why/Why not? by Magicbananasin subaru

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

I've been doing my own maintenance since I first started driving. I keep a detailed journal of all maintenance performed, including stats like MPG over the maintenance interval, any sort of details of problems, etc. as well as receipts.

A dealer cannot deny warranty claims if you can prove you followed the maintenance schedule, so the more documentation you have the better.

My main reason for doing my own work is that I do not trust the dealer. I've had more bad experiences than I can count, ranging from not doing the work they claimed they did, to stripping / over-tightening, up-selling unneeded service, etc.

Performing regular, basic maintenance yourself is the best way to become "in tune" with your car, and become aware of potential problems before they occur. You may not save time, but you will certainly save money.

Any thoughts on these Dainese Cafe boots? by BrutalCassiusin motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

I'd say they look decent -- you're paying a premium for the materials, and you're missing out on some beneficial features like toe sliders and shin protection. Assuming there's no zipper on the inside, the laces may be a PITA, and you'll need to be careful to tuck them so they don't get caught on the pegs or controls. Otherwise, the major features are there, heal and toe protection, ankle bone protection, shifter reinforcement...

Best route to Temecula during rush hour? by metworkin orangecounty

[–]HoWheelsWork 2 points3 points ago

You can shave about an hour off by taking the toll roads (133 to 241 to 91) vs using 55 or 57. FasTrak will shave a few more minutes off.

However the fastest route is probably using 74, even if you don't like it. A coworker of mine used to commute every day to/from Murieta, and preferred 74 even over the toll roads.

2004 Cavalier Clutch Slave Cylinder is toast. Need advice on parts/repair. by jgmachinein Cartalk

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

My initial reaction was to say "there's no it should cost $500 labor to replace the slave cylinder", but apparently it's located inside the bell housing on your transmission (after some googling). So yeah, you're going to need to drop the tranny to do it.

I was also kind of surprised to see that price on slave cylinders for your car also. I checked the price for an OEM equivalent at NAPA, and it was about $249, so not a tremendous savings. I wouldn't trust the $70 one either.

When I replaced the slave cylinder on my Honda Civic 2 or 3 years ago, it was $49 for the part from NAPA. It was located right on the front of the transmission, and came right off with 3 bolts. It took me no more than 20 minutes to replace, and bleed the clutch fluid.

I hate to say it, but this is going to be an expensive job. Is he quoting you one price to do the slave, and another for the clutch? Labor for replacing the clutch should be reduced tremendously if he's already got the transmission dropped to replace the slave cylinder. Or is $1,260 the full price to replace the clutch and slave?

Dog Kennel / End Table (x/p woodworking) by KirbyGin DIY

[–]HoWheelsWork 3 points4 points ago

Very cool idea. I'm hoping to do something similar myself (once we finally move into a house). We've got two dogs, and while their crates are effective, they are aesthetically unpleasant, and get in the way. My only concern is that our min pin would very likely test the limits of that brass hardware.

2003 Jetta 1.8T getting terrible gas mileage. by ledzep4lifein Cartalk

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

Could be many things. I'm assuming you bought this car used? Do you have access to the service records? This could help provide clues as to what maintenance was or was not done when you compare against the VW maintenance schedule. Many cars have a major service required at or around 100k miles.

In addition to the things you mentioned (other than the coolant temp. sensor, which should not affect MPG), you may want to consider:

  • Spark plug wires
  • PCV valve
  • Tires / alignment (check for abnormal wear)
