Take One Ducati 1098R, Add $100,000 and Mix Well by gotfonduein motorcycles

If this is the video you're talking about, I'm pretty sure it's not the same guy. Clip of him talking about his bike (pre-crash).

60+ F outside... why the fuck did I put my bike in winter storage? by Double_Ain motorcycles

Yeah, same here. I hear the rates get quite a bit cheaper once we turn 40 though ;)

You may want to give Foremost (Ducati's prefered provider), and AllState a call.

Geico quoted me $1800 / year for the Diavel (maximum, full coverage). Foremost, nearly half that, and AllState (who I've been with for the last year), even less.

Yeah, owning a Ducati is expensive. Full coverage on my Harley is about $400 / year.

Had to take off on a hill today. Holy shit. by madi1131in motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 2 points3 points ago

I second this. I tend to give way more throttle than I need (about 2k RPM or so) and hold it there, and use the clutch to determine how fast I go, right around the friction zone. Having power to the wheel is absolutely critical in hill situations, and the last thing you want to have happen is to be rolling backwards!

Minsk Motorcycles? by Fistanditilusin motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

I think the whole idea behind Hammond's choice was that they are cheap, and easy to come by parts ... due to the fact that they are everywhere within proximity to the Soviet Union. Both of those advantages are totally lost if you live in America (which I assume OP is from).

I'd argue that America's Minsk is the 883 Sportster. It's totally possible to find one around $2000, parts are literally everywhere, parts are dirt cheap, they're easy to work on, and reliable.

Air Ride Scooter by sandro_bitin Autos

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

So, I was under the impression that the reason why those HELLAFLUSH guys mount inappropriately-narrow tires on super-wide rims was to gain a little bit of extra clearance from the fenders. Scooters obviously have no fenders, so what is the point? Couldn't afford a 240 rear tire?

Newt Gingrich says Spanish is the language of the Ghetto by AnthroGlazein linguistics

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

It would have been political suicide for him not to. It was definitely his fault for having phrased his position so poorly. However, what could he have done? Just complain that the video floating around the internet was edited to make it worse? Tell his constituants that they're dumb for believing it? He had no choice but to apologize, as ineffective as it was.

Dog eating wires? by swgoldein Dogtraining

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

The back of my TV has all of the wires running through loom tubing. For high-cable areas, I recommend buying several different diameters of tubing, so you can create junctions, if needed. Loom is available in different colors, and of course can be painted to match your furniture / walls. Usually black is all you need for electronics.

I'm also a big fan of Wiremold, and anything that is permanantly attached to an outlet has one of these. If you are clever and careful, you won't even notice that you have any wires around the house at all!

Beyond this, the best strategies to prevent biting on wires are: Make the wires as inconspicuous as possible. A big tangled mess of wires may appear very interesting to a dog! Physically restrict access to them. On top of the wire looms behind my TV / Entertainment rack, I've restricted access behind the TV with a subwoofer on one side, and a DVD rack on the other. My dogs would need to be VERY motivated to want to go back there, so I think it's important to make it appear as unappealing as possible (hide all the wires!) as well.

Newt Gingrich says Spanish is the language of the Ghetto by AnthroGlazein linguistics

[–]HoWheelsWork -2 points-1 points ago

I understand that, of course. However, I don't see much linguistic merrit in this discussion, rather than political mudslinging. And to be clear, I am certainly no fan of Newt, the Republican party, and I actually feel quite ashamed that I went out of my way to defend anything that he says!

Newt Gingrich says Spanish is the language of the Ghetto by AnthroGlazein linguistics

[–]HoWheelsWork -8 points-7 points ago

People who live in the ghetto don't have the financial freedom to be a "citizen of the world", and enjoy the fact that the language they speak is shared by 100's of millions of other speakers, many of whom may or may not be prosperous.

The video of Newt is heavily edited to make his comments more shocking than their original context. He is clearly not calling Spanish "The language of the ghetto." What he's saying is that learning English is a big help to get out of the ghetto in America, just as learning Spanish would be a big help to get out of the ghetto in Spain for Moroccans, Chinese, Russians and other immigrants.

My 2 cents: Take your political agenda out of /r/linguistics

Where to buy Bacon? by dubearin orangecounty

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

Whole Foods has a pretty decent selection of bacon, but it's on the pricey side. I still haven't found anything I like better than what I've had shipped to me through Zingerman's. I particularly like the Applewood smoked (Even more expensive than Whole Foods)

Question about 600 mile maintenance on a Monster 796. by ra2003in motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

The good news is our Ducs have a very long major service interval. With periodic oil changes and chain maintenance, you won't need major service until 15k miles! Even paying the dealership's insane service fee (they quoted me $1,200!), it still comes out cheaper than what Harley charges for 15k miles of regular service (and no, I did not go to Harley to service my bike).

What care should be taken for the leather on a bike stored outside? by mathematicalin motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 0 points1 point ago

First, your bike is going to get nasty, no matter what precautions you take, including a bike cover.

Your best bet is to be extra-diligent with cleaning all parts of the bike, including the leather.

With that said, a bike cover will absolutely help, especially against sun fade.

I had good luck treating my leather saddle with mink oil. Be careful to wipe it off completely after letting it sit, as you do not want your saddle to be slippery. Also be careful not to over-apply, as it can cause your leather to stretch out a bit. You may also notice the leather getting greasy in the sun if you apply too much. I've seen others recommend saddle soap, but the mink oil has been great in my experience.

You may want to consider using something like ACF-50 occasionally on the rest of the bike to try to mitigate the forces of nature.

Question about 600 mile maintenance on a Monster 796. by ra2003in motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

While in general, this is a good idea, the Ducati service manually is really something that needs to be seen to believe. The English is more like Ital-grish, and it will leave you scratching your head unless you really know what you're doing. I have quite a bit of wrench-turning experience under my built (engine swaps, engine rebuild, tranny rebuild), and even I think that service is probably better left to someone with experience with these bikes. Fortunately, I have an experienced Ducati Factory AMA Superbike mechanic down the street from me, who charges quite a bit less than my time is worth to monkey around with it myself!

Question about 600 mile maintenance on a Monster 796. by ra2003in motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

Here's what was covered for my break-in service for the Diavel:

  • Change engine oil and oil filter
  • Check brakes hydraulic fluid levels, add as necessary
  • Flush and bleed clutch hydraulic fluids
  • Set tire pressures
  • Clean, lube and adjust drive chain
  • Lube chassis
  • Check front and rear brake wear
  • Connect DDS. And check for fault codes
  • Reset maintenance light
  • Road test the bike

There's no way to reset the maintenance light without the DDS (There is an aftermarket DDS tool out there, but trust me, you probably don't want to shell out the cash for it), so you're going to need to go to a dealer one way or the other. Fortunately for me, I have a great independent Ducati shop near me who charges quite a bit less than the nearest dealer!

The dealership quoted me $180 just for labor to replace the rear tire!

2000 Monster 750 Exhaust options by ccurvinin motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

Hello fellow Ducati rider. My experience with other Ducati owners out there is that you need to go Termi's or go home ;)

With that said, I don't feel very comfortable spending $3500 for an exhaust upgrade! Although I think they are significantly less expensive for the Monster?

Have you checked out the Leo Vince exhaust? Not too pricy, and look/sound nice.

Hey Rideit!!! Show us a pic (or two) of the first two wheels that made you fall in love… by The_Br3wMast3rin motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 2 points3 points ago

At the risk of being burned at the stake by the ATGATT guys, it was a Yamaha 115cc Neo. Rode it for several weeks on vacation in Thailand, and put a good 1000 miles or so on it in the process. Not the most inspiring bike in the world, but the location and experience certainly was.

I think I barely touched 40 MPH with that thing, and it was straining hard to get up to that speed! But I loved every minute of it!

Slipper Clutch Experiences? by Marcusm117in motorcycles

[–]HoWheelsWork 1 point2 points ago

My Diavel has a slipper clutch stock, and my opinion is that it does nothing to detract from street riding. The main benefits on the street are: easier downshifting, and protection from over-revving when downshifting. I don't see any reason why you should actively avoid a bike with a slipper clutch. Possibly maintenance is more expensive than a standard clutch?
