I'd suggest reading "The 12 Steps and 12 Traditions" for a more modern take on AA.

At AA open discussion meetings, do you prefer "war stories" or stories about life in recovery? by locuesterin stopdrinking

I prefer focusing on the solution, but laughing at the problem every now and then doesn't hurt.

What are the risks of being honest with my doctor? by ridiculous_speedsin alcoholism

What are the risks of being honest with my doctor?

You might save your life.

You might find out your fears are unfounded.

You might put your mind at ease regardless by finding out what is rather then continuing to play the what if game.

Good job. What's your life like now?

It is a necessary evil of business.

No actually, it's not. I'm been on dozens of business meetings and never taking a drink at any of them. Even the 6 hour celebratory meals following corporate acquisitions where $100 bottles of wine are flowing. Even during the business lunches with vendors, and even during the trips to sporting events. I simply say "No thanks, I don't drink." when offered and explain that I'm an alcoholic when I have a close relationship with those I'm with.

The program of action I work to recover and stay recovered taught me I have choices in every situation. I didn't used to believe so, but that was part of my sickness too.

Did a week.... only to experienced a big cave in. by wuziznamein stopdrinking

[–]HideAndSeek 5 points6 points ago

IMO, it's about redirecting your will. Right now you're doing what you've always done when you start to feel. A few simple perceptions/philosophies that have helped me are "Where the body goes, the mind follows.", "I'm a chameleon.", and "To change how I think and feel, I first need to change my actions, not the other way around."

When I got and kept my body in safe, sober environments around other recovering/recovered drunks, my mind (attitude) started to change and take on the solution oriented perspective of those around me. Then, once I started doing the recovery type things the other people were doing, I started to think and feel better.

Then, when I was struggling, I didn't have to reach for the bottle, and instead could call other people who understood, could go to safe places, and could take appropriate actions which included reading, writing, and simply focusing on doing the next right thing and doing whatever that was.

I needed to be brain washed to a degree, as my brain needed washing. My way of thinking and doing clearly wasn't working for me. So I adopted the ways of others who were successfully staying sober.

I hope you can too.

Any Redditors successfully control their drinking? by jcohlein stopdrinking

[–]HideAndSeek 8 points9 points ago

How can I make sure my drinking doesn't get out of hand again?

If you're an alcoholic, you'll need to change your brain physiology. Specifically how your brain processes the chemical reactions when you ingest alcohol.

What are some good coping techniques you guys have?

I don't take the first drink, no matter what. That way I don't have to try and control how much I drink.

For those who have tried and failed, at what point did you know you had to stop for good?

When I found myself drinking yet again when I had every reason in the world not to. I had already gone back to AA after getting out of jail and my life was a complete mess. I had this one last opportunity to live, and yet there I was with a bottle of Budweiser in my hand, not enjoying the company I found myself with. I realized "I don't want this anymore." I dumped the rest of the beer out. Went home, and went to an AA meeting the next day.

That was 17 years and 1 day ago. Still going to a few AA mtgs a week, still practicing the principles/re-working the steps, still sober, and loving it.

Read the appendix on "The Spiritual Experience" in the back of the Big Book. It may shrink down that mountain down to a mole hill for you ;).

The spam filter nabbed your post.

I'd suggest you check out AlAnon. It's a program for affected family members/significant others of the alcoholic/addict. You'll learn about her, about you, and how you can best help.

About Speaking From The Podium by Wodnescildin REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]HideAndSeek 0 points1 point ago

Simply share what it was like, what happened, and what it is like now. If you have a few specific funny or emotionally moving experiences to share, include those. Talk about a few of the slogans or sayings that resonate strongly with you. Share how you worked the steps and the results of working each one during your journey. This is an opportunity for those in attendance to both learn more about you but also take one thing you say and apply it to their recovery. Make sure you end on time too.

And don't worry about being overly entertaining or even having a coherent story. Many of the speaker meetings I've been to over the years are complete train wrecks. Even some of the better ones (circuit speakers) went long past their allotted time which annoyed the attendees. Also, don't spend 40 minutes on your drunk-a-log and 15 on recovery, try to reverse that. Most AA members don't meet up to talk about drinking stories, they want solutions.

Just get up there, share your experience, and know you'll be helping a roomful of drunks stay sober another day. It's a beautiful thing!

What is this sub's perception of NA vs. AA? Just curious as I don't see NA mentioned too often. by unfubarin REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]HideAndSeek 2 points3 points ago

In my locale, the NA service structure is rather pathetic (a few dictators run the area assemblies). The AA service structure is strong and organized. As a result, the 60 or so AA meetings are well well attended and diverse. The 4 NA meetings are run by the same guy and good luck finding anyone getting and staying sober long term in NA.

It's too bad.

I'm an addict too but I never encountered all the various pills, the meth, and the heroin that all the addicts are addicted to these days. I simply can't relate to the overtly physical component regarding addiction.

I'm running it on a laptop actually with an imbedded video card. I'm sure that's the issue, as it's the only thing stopping me from being able to play D3 on that same laptop too.

When playing Skyrim, do you prefer 3rd or 1st Person? by xMykoolxin skyrim

[–]HideAndSeek 1 point2 points ago

Well, when I let Skyrim determine the video settings, they're all dropped to the minimums. I slide a few of them up so I get a little draw distance and up close detail and then my frame rate drops. I've found a manageable compromise that allows me to enjoy it.

edit, and the kicker is, when I run the systemlabsrequirement on that laptop for Skyrim, I'm closer to the recommended specs then the minimum.

[–]HideAndSeek 1 point2 points ago

Toshiba Satellite triple core something or another. It has everything but the memory card specs to run Diablo 3. Skyrim runs well enough with some of the visual sliders moved up from minimal so I can see enemies before they're attacking me.

3rd person always. I'm running Skyrim in near minimum video specs so being able to see what's around me when running 10-20 fps is vital.

Get Hogan and Carter off camera. Slow down the story lines and face/heel turns. Get some additional hours of programming each week so all the wrestlers get camera time. Get most of the roster into programs.

12 stepper with almost a year clean, I still haven't done my 4th. by Throwitawaynow654321in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]HideAndSeek 2 points3 points ago

Remember, your 4th step isn't going to be perfect. Simply do the best you can at this point and meet with your sponsor. They'll be able to guide you further.

I think what your sponsor is looking for is for you to put forth the action and start on your fact finding mission.

You state you're now at the point of "do the steps or die". I was at that point too, and I worked all 12 steps within a year. There's a touring "Back to Basics" program that works people through all 12 steps in one weekend.

In AA's infancy, alcoholics would work through the 4th step in a single evening, with the sponsor being the person doing the writing.

You're scared, I understand. But you're really making a mountain out of a mole hill. It stops becoming frightening and starts to become interesting once you get into the 4th step process and start to understand yourself.
