Get down off your high horse and be practical.

Oversaturation of tertiary education has led to a shortage in the trades, which is stifling the economy as a whole. It would be different if people went to go get degrees out of pure self-interest (and it should be mentioned that there are cheaper and arguably better methods for that than University), but that's not what's happening. Instead they go and get degrees, then end up working jobs in unskilled labour because there's no more market for their education. And of course, the cost of that education is subsidized largely by taxpayers who will never see any real benefits from their investment.

Learning is great, but the tangible benefits of getting a job in skilled labour greatly outweighs the theoretical benefits of having a society of unemployed artists and scientists.
