What game feels most like you're playing an episode of Star Trek: TNG? by balomusin Games

I always loved this one when I was a young'un.

Unfortunately I kind of doubt it stands the test of time...

I'll do some more searching, that link takes me to 2011 Mem Cup, but hopefully I can find this year's on there somewhere. I'd quite possibly prefer it without the commentators, so hopefully it works out.

Ya, don't have cable. Don't need cable it seems for anything other than games shown on Sportsnet. I'd imagine that Rogers somehow manages to block any of their games from being streamed. Not sure how they do it, but I can't find any of the Mem Cup games or any Blue Jays games online.

Not sure how many hockey fans are in here, let alone Habs fans, but is anyone else getting some deja vu to Montreal's season? Namely Gomez's inability to score?

Thanks for responding, I was afraid that might be the problem as well, but I finally found a solution, and after going to a previous driver version, it seems to be working. Hopefully sometime soon I'll be able to get myself a half-decent video card and avoid these kinda of problems altogether.

Hodgemail: Who's Canada's starting goalie in Sochi? by BenKerrin hockey

[–]HabsJD 2 points3 points ago

Montreal's season was more a product of organizational dysfunction and bad luck than it was having a bad team. The ridiculous number of injuries they had didn't help them at all either. The pieces are in place for them to have a solid season this year. A very solid first line, an excellent first defense pairing and a star goalie. A healthy Markov will go a long way to shoring up the rest of the defense, and a healthy Gionta will go a long way to giving Montreal a productive second line. And if we can dump Gomez somewhere, even the AHL, we're looking a lot better as well. And one of (hopefully) Yakupov, Grigorenko, or Galchenyuk could have an impact next season as well.

TL;DR In my biased opinion, Montreal is going to have a bounce-back year. I don't think Price's numbers are going to be hurt all that bad by the team in front of him.

Personally I'd have no problem with whatever happens to him. He didn't have a problem with what happened Tori.

Completely agree. I hope the rumours about what they do to child molestors/killers in prison are 100% true.

Ya, I'm chalking this year up to a lot of bad luck and tons of dysfunction. With Gauthier gone, a new page can be turned, and there are some damn good pieces in place already. Solid first line, excellent first defense pairing and a world class goaltender. Not a bad place for Bergevin to be starting from. Definitely looking forward to next season.

Add Gallagher, Holland, and Bournival and the group moving up to Hamilton next season is looking pretty damn good. Assuming Gallagher, and any of the others, don't end up in Montreal.

Ya, that's definitely disappointing when a team is unable to live up to expectations, especially with that kind of talent. Hope they can pull it together, I want to see the best tourney possible.

It would be hard to put them ahead of that London Knights Mem Cup team 7ish years ago. Aside from Perry, maybe not a ton of players that turned out to be stars, but as a team they really came together. And Methot, Girardi, Prust, and Bolland have all dug out some pretty decent careers for themselves. A little disappointed at the way Syvret, Schremp, and Fritsche's careers turned out though. But good to see Hunter having some NHL success now.

Good luck to Portland in any case. If they're as good as you say they are, having them with Saint John and London (if they can wrap the OHL up) would make for one hell of a tourney.

Haven't seen them, but he's put up some pretty decent numbers. Probably hard to really interpret them though, since most of Saint John's games have been blow-outs.

Also, just think, if the Knights can wrap it up tonight, both Tinordi and Beaulieu will be in the Mem Cup. Definitely the most interest I'll have in the tourney since the Knights won it 7ish years ago.

(SPOILERS SOS) On the bus... by californiasquirrelin asoiaf

Halfway through AFfC, so please no later spoilers...

For some reason, the Red Wedding didn't have quite the emotional impact on me that several other moments did. I recognized the gravity of what had just happened, but it didn't hit me near as hard as Ned's death, or ACoK spoiler for those watching the show I don't think I cried. Having said that, the epilogue of ASoS was one of the sweetest moments of the series for me.

Lived in Montreal for a year and developed a very deep hatred of Videotron. I wanted TekSavvy, but for some reason I couldn't get any form of DSL in my apt. By the end I really wanted to kick Videotron in the face. If I ever move back, I would probably choose a life without internet before going back to them. As much as I miss the hell out of Montreal, I'm glad I can get TekSavvy where I am now.

Getzlaf named Canada's captain for World Championship. Phaneuf and Sharp named as alternates. by suprmarioin hockey

Finally took the time to read that, glad I did, I needed a laugh. It's funny when people play the "you're saying something bad about my favourite team/player, you must be biased" card. Honestly, the only point you made in that rant was that Fenwick is apparently tracked for every team. A quick glance at that page didn't confirm for me that Corsi is, but I'm willing to admit that it very well may be. I'll admit I was wrong about that, I remember reading somewhere, an article or blog or something on advanced stats and it talked about one of the supposedly better ones that unfortunately was only tracked for a handful of teams. Somewhere along the way I got it in my head that it was Fenwick and Corsi they were talking about. Apparently it was something else.

You'll forgive me for not thanking you now or ever for the link. I feel that if the snobbery I see in your posts here has any correlation with taking those "advanced stats" for gospel truth, I'll pass. Sure they give a more in-depth look at what's happening over the course of a full game, but to what end? So I can look down on everyone that doesn't use them, which at this point is probably over 90% of hockey fans and 50% or more of hockey experts. Sure I'll give a cursory glance at them from time to time, but I'll stick with the stats that are more widely used for now. What benefit is there for anyone not working in an NHL head office to use Fenwick or Corsi? I can't think of any benefits beyond looking smarter than others, which to be perfectly honest with you, isn't something I need to do. My self-esteem is fine the way it is. If you need the boost, more power to you.

If I am relying too heavily on +/- because it supports my statements, you're taking it even further to the other extreme. You're completely denying the relevance of a very widely used stat simply because it doesn't support your statements. As I've said, probably close to a dozen times now, +/- is a perfectly meaningful stat if you look at it critically. Which is exactly what I've been doing.

Alright, so Phaneuf is good at gaining possession and generating an attack. I'd say that shines a light more on his defensive liabilities. If a player is good at moving the puck forward, but also has one of the worst +/-'s on the team, something is breaking down. Maybe he's awful defending the rush, maybe he's getting burned on cheating too often. Either way doesn't speak well for the soundness on the defensive side of his game.

Sure the team played well for a good portion of the season, I'm not denying that. Maybe Phaneuf is a good leader when things are going well. He can get a winning team motivated, good for him. I suppose I'll concede the fact that he knows how to lead a team when everything is going well, but when adversity strikes, he doesn't seem to be that great at righting the ship.
