I've been following this subreddit and the news with interest for quite some time... by shimmersplinterin collapse

Finish school since it can help provide somewhat of a safety net if SHTF slowly but try to learn a variety of skills which people around you will value. A unique blend of skill-sets will not only be seen as an asset within any community you come across but also aids in finding the right lines of work so you can add physical value to people's lives and not just paper-push. Also, keep in mind that any individual, group of people, company, organization, etc. which sends out applications for aid from someone with a certain skill-set to help them accomplish tasks they otherwise wouldn't be able to complete on their own needs your help as much as you need an income.

The real story behind the rejected TED talk on inequality. by cptjmshookin politics

[–]Gonlin 0 points1 point ago

Yea, it sucks that a PR story wasted Reddit's front page space with something which should have been MSM drama.

Too Hot for TED: Income Inequality — TED’s organizers recently decided one idea was too controversial to spread: the notion that widening income inequality is a bad thing for America, and that as a result, the rich should pay more in taxes by CroydonCin politics

[–]Gonlin 0 points1 point ago

My comment may get buried but, overall, this non-event will probably help TED generate some publicity in the short run while putting a small dent on their reputation over the long term. Anyone who doesn't like TED can view tons of other inspiring talks with controversial ideas on YouTube. There's also plenty of intellect destroying political puppet shows on CNN, CNBC, and FOX News for individuals who love partisan drama. Last but not least, there's also this talk on methods for mitigating income inequality to the point where poverty is subjective rather than objective. Overall, Mr. Hanauer's speech is something we've all heard before, probably wouldn't have generated many views on TED, and would have produced many more talking points on a partisan news channel. The fact that this un-posted talk got so much attention sheds more light on Hanauer's talk than it deserves while simultaneously showing how he focuses on one small part of a much larger problem which is more complex than just taxing rich folks. That is all.

Like Ran Prieur, but... by dead_inside832in ranprieur

[–]Gonlin 4 points5 points ago*

What I get from Ran's essays and website is that we must all find our own ways to turn bullshit life gives us into seed planting mulch. Overall Ran, like anyone else here, uses the system's broken tools to creatively turn garbage into treasure.

Any good UFO Podcasts? by lizzingandsnartingin UFOs

As someone who knows absolutely no music theory, where should I start? by Komodoxin edmproduction

[–]Gonlin 3 points4 points ago*

You could theoretically go on learning theory forever since many people spend their entire life memorizing every scale and chord combination possible. Overall, just learn as much theory as you need to because different genres require different amounts of theory knowledge. Being curious about how different notes work together also helps since, you'll discover your instrument/ instruments of choice are like puzzles waiting to be unlocked.

I also agree with the above poster who said:

*Learn Chords *Scales *And basic terms

Also, here are some materials which I found to be quite useful: *Raven Spiral Guide *Music Theory For Computer Musicians *Understanding Chords

What are we going to do? by xXIJDIXxin Anarchism

[–]Gonlin 1 point2 points ago*

As bad as it is now, I don't think capitalism has to completely fall for us to see a better world since it's currently our life/death support system but it could, at the very least, make room for alternative systems to emerge without nipping them in the bud all the time.

You may also want to check out this thread on the same topic. More newly awoken people than ever have reached their breaking point but are still suffering from morning grogginess. From my own viewpoint, it seems we're all in a warm-up phase which may eventually bring new ideas and more creative direct actions as more people regain consciousness from the nightmare we've been living in for the last 30+ years.

Has the occupy movement failed? by wskerrin occupywallstreet

[–]Gonlin 0 points1 point ago*

Occupy never really failed but just transformed because every movement is a learning process. After all has been said and done failing, learning, then adapting with changing circumstances are what keep any movement's flow going. More activists will also begin joining Occupy along with other movements springing up around it as they become disenfranchised by the current establishment. In the end, we're all just learning together so the only true failure any movement can make is giving up.

Hey Live gurus, just wondering how you guys make your tune and the different parts of the song. by dugindoverin edmproduction

[–]Gonlin 1 point2 points ago*

There's generally five parts to production:

  • Mixing & Mastering

  • Composing

  • Sound Design

  • Performance

  • Learning Instruments

All of these parts may overlap depending on how you make music and don't always have to be executed in the same order every time. Just figure out what works for you then go from there but remember to keep each of the parts above as separate as possible.

Advice for a young prepper who's parent's don't/won't understand? by SplDurkeein collapse

[–]Gonlin 1 point2 points ago*

I Agree with the comments above. Try growing some of your own food. That's something you can do whether shtf soon or not since it looks normal and piques people's curiosity in a good way (:. Do as much prep stuff as possible behind the scenes but focus mainly on building relationships while securing what you eat whether it be through Windowfarms, PlanterPonics, a small backyard garden, Aquaponics, Hydroponics, etc.
