Why do I want to go to heaven? by mindfields51in atheism

[–]Gargilius 0 points1 point ago

....and why did Osama made the list too? wasn't he a true believer, who valiantly fought the infidels, a martyr?

By theists logic, he would be right there, ahead of the queue, along with a bunch of other mass murderers.

Man jumps from plane without parachute for the first time. by KrowbarMOin technology

[–]Gargilius 2 points3 points ago

Actually, no, a number of people jumped out of aircraft without a parachute before. Some of whom even survived to tell the tale.

What's different and new here is that i) he jumped out of the aircraft intentionally ii) with the intent of surviving the experience, and iii) walked away from it unharmed.

I've recently recieved a windfall and think a CD might be my best option... However, I don't really know what a CD is. Any redditors care to help? by amendment64in investing

[–]Gargilius 0 points1 point ago

I am not a pro at all, but I have some CDs as my 'oh-shit-fund', i.e., what I would use to pay the bills should I lose my source of income - I set it up as a ladder, so should I need the money, I can cash in 1/12th of it every month.

EDIT: ...there is probably a much smarter way to setup a 'oh-shit-fund', any suggestion?

Yet another reason not to do it: this is definitely unhygienic...

I would ask for a copy of the US constitution. Seems appropriate, and surely there is a copy somewhere in a court of law...

To be fair, riding a bike in The Netherlands is a heck of a lot safer than doing so in most US urban areas.

Found this while Geocaching. Maybe a bomb? by Flowtosin WTF

[–]Gargilius 0 points1 point ago

Interesting cultural reference: where I grew up, what to do when finding unexploded ordnance is something that we were taught in school right from first grade (in an age appropriate way), i.e., whom to call, how one marks the area to let other people know of the hazard (while waiting for the people who handle these things at a safe distance), how to recognize an area already marked as hazardous, this sort of things. It is also one of the useful tidbits info printed in the first pages of every phone book.

...how thoughtful. We really should pencil SI conversions on bombs before dropping them on countries that insist on the metric system.

Any Reddit Heart Attack Survivors? by chestneyin pics

[–]Gargilius 4 points5 points ago

What happens next? i.e., what kind of recovery exercise if any do you have to do? what precautions do you have to take from now on? retrospectively, what would/should you have done differently to avoid getting into such tight spot? was there a way to detect the problem earlier?

I am asking this because I lost two colleagues about my age in recent years to heart failures, and it is a bit of a stressful job...

Nope.

That said, go right ahead and see if you can convince an examiner at your next check ride and/or a CFI at your next BFR.

It ss not technically a clearance ; I know I am picking nits here, but that's the kind of details that can make you fail a check ride :-)

In USA, all you have to hear to enter Class-C is ATC acknowledging your ID/registration; say, once you called in, ATC replies "N-XXXX stand by" - or whatever, the point is that your registration was acknowledged - you can still get in - because you have "established and maintained two-way radio communications with the ATC facility having jurisdiction" to use FAA phraseology.

If I am not mistaken, that is not enough to do the same in Europe, you need to hear something like "N-XXXX you are cleared through whatever airspace" or something along these lines, i.e., an explicit clearance, just like we do here to get into Class-B.

Am I wrong?

EDIT: I am of course talking about flying VFR; if you are on an IFR flight-plan and clearance, the point is moot.

The Hindenburg had a smoking lounge though, how cool is that? (if you consider the amount of hydrogen it had on board...) - designed with a pressure differential with the rest of the habitat to avoid accidents.

I am kinda fond of this Hindenburg, got interested since I met a nice elderly lady at some garden party I attended, who told me about having flown in the thing.
