Week 21: Chicken Sous Vide sounds French, right? by StoicLoofahin 52weeksofcooking

[–]Frydendahl 3 points4 points ago

Sous vide is an excellent cooking method for steaks. The general idea is simple to submerge the piece of meat in water that has the same temperature as you want the centre of the meat to have. By leaving the meat in the water for long enough (and making sure the water isn't in direct physical contact with the meat, only thermal contact) you can cook any piece of meat perfectly, because it is literally impossible for the meat to exceed the temperature of the water, making this an idiot-proof method for cooking the perfect steak.

The only disadvantage is that for the meat and water to reach thermal equilibrium can take a LOT of time (several hours), but apart from just checking up on the temperature every once in a while, you're not doing anything. Having a larger amount of water will make the temperature of your water bath more stable (you could potentially use a large insulated cooler, only adding some hot water to it every once in a while to maintain temperature) especially at the point the meat is submerged, since this will generally make the temperature drop quite a bit, unless the mass of the water far exceeds that of the meat (basic thermodynamics). Use a very hot frying pan/grill or a chef's torch to create a nice brown surface on your meat after it has cooked long enough.

Solar eclipse in 1919: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_May_29,_1919#Observations

Not exactly an experiment (technically an observation), but one hell of a prediction on Einstein's part. Keep in mind that this eclipse happened only 3 years after Einstein published his general theory of relativity.

An MRI operates by creating a strong magnetic field, which aligns the spin of protons in the atoms that make up water molecules in the patients body. The magnetic field is then turned 'off' and 'on' at a given frequency which makes the protons in the subject radiate radiowaves, which are then collected to make up the MRI image. Saying there's no radiation in an MRI is false, but what radiation is present is low energy and not harmful, since it isn't capable of ionising tissue in the patients body.

If you're mainly playing solo: Get a Money Magnet. It's incredibly powerful when clearing out bots, since it scoops up all the coins for you.

Can you identify our bonsai? by raspkerryin Bonsai

[–]Frydendahl 1 point2 points ago

I would hazard a guess that it's some kind of ligustrum/privet, or something closely related. Does it get white flowers in the summer?

Also, with the amount of moss growing and the yellowing of the leaves it doesn't seem to get nearly enough light?

As somebody who currently lives in a Scandinavian welfare state were even the highest levels of education are paid for by the government, and where you qualify for financial aid once you're over 18 years of age and under education (yes, I get PAID to take that 5 year university degree): I never feel more humbled than when I read about the situation for people my age in America.

Come brother, let us bask in the comforting radiance of pure nihilism and the realization that we are nothing but insignificant specks dancing to the hollow dirge of existence on the surface of a piece of rock that floats through cold and unloving space!

You can thank the DnD alignment system for its stupid and childlike representation of morals. Yes according to DnD there are people who are inherently evil for the sole purpose to be evil, which doesn't even make sense when you start to ask what "evil" even is.

Nope, but orc is a monster race, and thus you're heavily discouraged from actually playing one (both because of lack of support in the rules, and because people generally associate orcs with raping and pillaging).

The general idea of the half-orc race is to provide players with a way to actually play an 'orc', because the a full-blooded orc is HIGHLY unlikely to ever amount to being an adventurer, and because it would be almost impossible for an orc to actually integrate in society.

Orcs are born chaotic evil. They're genetically destined to be evil bastards.

C: Plays a lot of video games.

Hasselback Potatoes by nicksatdownin recipes

[–]Frydendahl 2 points3 points ago

You could just cut off a very thin slice on the bottom of the potato to level it out. I usually do that myself whenever I make half baked potatoes (half a potato, not half cooking time), to ensure that the oil spread on top doesn't run off.

I don't know how well it keeps after being harvested, but it definitely loses its potency very quickly after being grated into a paste (something in the magnitude of 20 min).
