Motorola won't upgrade Droid 3 or X2 to ICS; their excuse: ICS will not "improve" these phones enough by mepperin Android

[–]FlyingBishop 0 points1 point ago

I find it difficult to believe a soft keyboard can match a hard keyboard without autocorrect.

And I just hate autocorrect. It promotes lazy thinking. Even txt spk is more expressive than agreeing with what the computer suggests you say. I don't even really like capital correction or punctuation insertion.

i sometimes choose not to capitalize something

or to neglect punctuation

Neither really works in this context, they are however a great way to convey 'tone' in a text-only medium. Autocorrect is tone-deaf. Even good autocorrect is tone-deaf.

NoScript is a Firefox plugin that allows you to whitelist sites to run JavaScript. I have Reddit whitelisted.

I don't believe it's possible to run Reddit without JS, it's not really necessary.

I would say a movie collection is not important enough for backups, and that RAID provides decent reliability for such things, but doesn't provide backups.

For most uses, Dropbox, or just S3 directly with some sort of sync tool, is going to be cheaper and safer.

Disclaimer: I own stock in Amazon.

XFCE4.10 Official PPA for Ubuntu 12.04 | The Right Guy's Blog by chokesmasterin Ubuntu

Why isn't the stable version in the main repos? I worry that PPAs are getting out of hand when the only way to get a stable version of certain things is a PPA.

"Remember the recommended way to shut down GNOME 3 is to log out, and then shut down from the login screen; the Alt key is more of a hidden easter egg." by barnibeein linux

[–]FlyingBishop 13 points14 points ago

Their thinking is wrong. I don't think there is anyone off their team who will disagree. They're living in a fantasy world where every computer is shipped with Linux drivers. The drivers have gotten a lot better, but I have never had a computer I've installed Ubuntu on where suspend is reliable enough to replace shutdown. Even where it works, it uses significantly more power than on the Windows OS the machine shipped with.

I'm not really concerned by my phone's lack of a VHS player, but I am concerned by its lack of a jack I can plug into an arbitrary video source and record to internal storage. There's definitely something we've lost here.

Cut that shit out. Stop simplifying. All of these bills are bad in their own way. We cannot be reduced to mindless populism.

What was a grave mistake you made that you were able to fix through sheer dwarfitude? by dharma_farmerin dwarffortress

[–]FlyingBishop 1 point2 points ago

On several occasions I have accidentally tunneled up into an aquifer, and plugged the hole within a minute, without losing a single dwarf.

The worst was the time I was building a pump stack on the side of a river adjacent to my farms (all of this underground mind you, the river was in a gorge) and I was trying to water my farms, but I forgot to set up a lever to toggle the power to the pump. It of course started pumping the second it started and swept several dwarves into the river.

You don't know these people, you're basically just insulting them. I never would have accused you of advocating anarchy, but you definitely just wrote that there are some anarchists whose actions you consider respectable - if you don't consider anarchists respectable just say so, don't make adolescent jabs at their hormones. (And certainly don't posit examples of respectable anarchists if you simply think anarchists aren't respectable.)

What can we do about these pervasive bad math questions on our kid's homework and tests? by beernutmarkin math

[–]FlyingBishop 2 points3 points ago

I think the biggest issue is the word "expect" though, which implies that this is some sort of sequence and the next flip's outcome is fixed.

What can we do about these pervasive bad math questions on our kid's homework and tests? by beernutmarkin math

[–]FlyingBishop -2 points-1 points ago

"Expect" is different from "most likely." The question should read "Based on these tosses, what is the most likely result when you flip this coin?" or something like that.

How come so much less is being done to stop/raise awareness of CISPA compared to SOPA when it is perhaps far worse? by ArchaeopteryxAlexin SOPA

[–]FlyingBishop 9 points10 points ago

SOPA and CISPA are basically unrelated. CISPA is pretty much in line with the Patriot Act (a bad law that is already on the books.) CISPA basically adds "with a computer" to a lot of the warrantless provisions of the Patriot Act, adding a few more warrantless provisions.

SOPA criminalized things that were not previously criminal. SOPA would make people go to jail who had not done anything that could make them go to jail under the present regime. It would have created a new class of criminal activity.

CISPA is just another incremental push towards a surveillance society. "If you haven't done anything wrong, you shouldn't have anything to hide" is the justification. I definitely agree that CISPA tramples on the Fourth Amendment and should not stand, but comparing it to SOPA is preposterously reductionist. SOPA has more in common with bills criminalizing miscarriages.

Some words need to be swapped around, but I think your sentiment is basically what Emma Goldman's detractors would have said.

Would you be more respectful of them if they had tried to assassinate a local bank mogul? You make it sound like there's something respectable in anarchism that this demonstration doesn't represent, and I don't see what separates them from Emma Goldman.

On Call compensation by NoX315in sysadmin

[–]FlyingBishop 0 points1 point ago

I'd say you negotiated for the wrong thing: me, I want comp time, not a flat check.

But at the current rate of problems, $3000 sounds like decent compensation. Just pay attention and make sure that the amount of time you work during your oncall doesn't start dropping below your hourly rate (subtracting the one hour you can come in late.)

You know, it's great that you can report that, but personally I have no way to verify that a given dump contains everything. I trust Google Apps as my memory... It's a deeper problem than backup.

Okay, what do you put those backups into? Have you tested recovery?

I don't like backups when I can't really restore them to anything, they're more warm-fuzzy-feeling than dependable backup.
