Chrome Browser Usage Artificially Boosted by okayUKin technology

[–]Fidodo -1 points0 points ago

I never said it didn't. I do think Chrome's auto update is technologically better though from what I've read about both systems. Chrome and Firefox are not all the other browsers though.

[–]Fidodo 2 points3 points ago

Until the next set of specs come out. Then it's the waiting game again. Right now chrome has some of the best auto update I've seen in any application. Once the other browsers have caught up in that regard, I wont care who uses what browsers.

As a developer I really only care about one feature. Auto-update. It doesn't matter if your browser can do all the newest stuff. If the majority of your users are using a version 10 years old it doesn't matter.

Has anyone noticed this new trend of ditching the significance of sidebars? Is this a good idea? by prymein web_design

[–]Fidodo 17 points18 points ago

And it's just not what they're looking for. They want to see the content from the link they just clicked on prior, it's too early to ask them to go to the next content link. If I'm watching a video I wont even glance at the recommended links until after I'm done with the video. People consume linearly.

I have never used marijuana. As a result, all I know is based on the seemingly constant praise and justification it receives on the internet. Reddit, what are your worst experiences with the drug and why is it illegal? by MagikalGiantin AskReddit

[–]Fidodo 0 points1 point ago

I really don't think anyone has had a terrible singular experience with it comparable to other drugs. I think the danger that comes from the drug is from habits. I've had some friends that just got way too into the drug. Smoking every day, and even planning their day around it. However I've smoked with them and never formed a habit, but I don't have an addictive personality. I also have plenty of other friends that moderate it properly like with drinking, and I have friends that drink way too much too.

I really don't think it's any worse than drinking. That's why the propaganda against it calls it a gateway drug. Because they don't have a good enough argument against it on its own, so they need to create a relationship with it to other drugs. And I think it's true, but because of societal pressures, not because of anything inherent about the drug. If you want weed you need to find someone who has it and they're probably involved with the rest of the drug scene as well. That's how you get involved. If you could go to a corner store and buy a pack, that association would be gone.

Game developers of Reddit with multiplayer components, is there a technical reason that Blizzard runs the entire Diablo 3 experience through their servers? by telamascopein Games

[–]Fidodo 2 points3 points ago

Even if you vote with your wallet if enough people vote the other way it could still become the norm, and then you wouldn't have that option. I think it's worth it to bitch and moan and argue and protest, and tell the world how stupid you think this is. Social media does mean something, and if a huge amount of the internet is up in arms about something it still makes a difference. It might not change Blizzard's mind, but it might change the mind of other developers that are watching this closely.

Of course they'd still make more than enough money if the online auction house only applied to online games. I think they're being greedy.

5 Reasons 'Diablo III' Represents Gaming's Annoying Future by fanboy_killerin Games

[–]Fidodo 1 point2 points ago

I think it's the same as the unlockable DLC argument. I think that when you are buying data you should be able to use it how you please. Sure they can lock you out of their connected service but if you're doing it in an enclosed environment on your own computer, not interacting with anyone else, I think you should be able to do whatever the hell you feel like doing with it.

I personally think it's an assault on the tinker culture that helps inspire the next generation of creators. If kids can't break things things and create new things with the media they buy I think lots of would be builders wont get the chance to experiment and discover new interests. I remember playing around with game data, modifying model skins, messing around with registries and breaking stuff on my computer when I was a kid. If you can't get those changes to run in the game that inspiration wont be there.

It's as if you bought Legos, and Lego wouldn't allow you to build anything except the model those pieces were intended for. It's the same argument, you're impacting their business because you're creating new content instead of buying a new model from Lego. Sure that'll never happen, but only in such that it's not enforceable. Imagine how many future engineers wouldn't grow up if they couldn't experiment as kids. That can't happen with materials, but it could happen with games.

What would happen if ALL games were locked down and NOBODY could tinker with their favorite game? I know that I wouldn't have been as into computers and may not have pursued a career in it. Sure there'll always be open source but when I was a kid I didn't want to mess around with some crappy open source game. I wanted to mess around with one of my favorite games. Diablo II.

So yes. I believe that data should be free to use however you want when you buy it. If you want to use their online service then they can impose any restrictions they want, but if you aren't you should be able to mess around however you want on an unconnected, non network game.

Do you mean the security of the auction house in terms of hacking, or in terms of trying to sell items to people in all game modes? And if they're trying to force us to spend money on items that you should be able to hack for in single player that's an illegitimate reason.

[–]Fidodo 2 points3 points ago

If there's the potential to make a gameplay mode not connected it shouldn't be. It's about consumer choice. When I played Diablo 2 I enjoyed both the multiplayer part of the game as well as modding the hell out of my single player game. Why should that be dictated when there's no need or benefit from that?

Use a web inspector. It will show that rule crossed out with a notice sign next to it. Can't miss it. In fact, whenever your css does something and you don't know why the inspector will tell you.
