[TOMT] What are these spinning discs called? [img] by MeatUnitin tipofmytongue

[–]Escheria 0 points1 point ago

I dunno what they're called either, but you might try r/whatisthisthing.

Lemme know if they know? I'm curious now, too.

[TOMT] Music (has sample inside) by orientalsniperin tipofmytongue

[–]Escheria 0 points1 point ago

"get your .... down" and "put your ipods on" is what it sounded like at first, but the last part sounded Arabic (or at least Middle Eastern, anyway) rather than English. I'm not a speaker, but I'm pretty sure at least the last part is distinct enough that somebody who speaks the language would understand.

[TOMT] Awesome trailer, can't remember the movie. by usernamewastakenin tipofmytongue

[–]Escheria 0 points1 point ago

One of these evil santa trailers? Neither of these seem to be murder mysteries, but they've got the snow, and are dark enough that I could see them mutating into such in your memory. But I guess you'd probably remember the Santa.

Rare Exports trailer? Came out two years ago.

Evil Santa? This one isn't an actual trailer, but a stand-alone trailer, so to speak. And it probably isn't it, but hey, just in case. From one year ago.

EDIT: unrelated to Santa, maybe The Troll Hunter trailer? UK trailer? There's another official trailer for it, too, but it has less snow, and spoilers.

[TOMT]Old floppy drive game where you swam around as a fish and ate other fish and got bigger [video game] by cravinmavinin tipofmytongue

I'm not the OP, I'm afraid. Just someone who was browsing the subreddit and got distracted. :P

[TOMT] [SONG] Song that sounds like this, but is much more well known: by ShazbotSimulator2012in tipofmytongue

[–]Escheria 2 points3 points ago

Moby - Flower?

EDIT: Hugo - 99 Problems?

EDIT1: For the record, I found these by sifting through youtube comments. It amuses me that they have suddenly proven to be useful.

[–]Escheria 0 points1 point ago

You made me start playing this, and then I played it until I "ate everything and completely destroyed the ecosystem". I'd been hoping it would just let me get bigger and bigger and bigger until my fish was just a giant eye taking up the screen, but it was not to be.

[TOMT] What's the name of the giant floating stingray that silently glides through the sky? by TradaPIBin tipofmytongue

That is very strange, I must say.

[MUSIC] [IIL] music like Hit the Floor or Across the Line by Linkin Park [WEWIL?] by browniebiznatchin ifyoulikeblank

[–]Escheria 0 points1 point ago

Fort Minor, perhaps? It's the side project of Linkin Park's rapper. Start with the Rising Tied album.

Ubersoldier 2 English demo. Haven't tried it yet.

My band finally released its first EP [Van Gogh Sky - have/had] by fcpericin mathrock

[–]Escheria 2 points3 points ago

This is fantastic! It's good to see something different in math rock.

I particularly like the instrumental bit at the end of the fourth track and the atypical style of the vocals.

This is definitely something I'll spend some time with. :D

What are some bands or songs that absolutely blow your mind but never get recognition? by epatti0914in Music

Woah, I'm so glad I told you I liked them.

Thank you. I'm sure my listening will be very happy. :D

Not the chap who suggested it, but I looked it up, so here.

Rogue Valley is so peaceful. :)

And I never thought I could enjoy something so reggae-influenced as Roster McCabe. I hate reggae, but this is awesome.

Halloween, Alaska is quite promising; I'll have to look into it more later.

I am indifferent to The Head and the Heart, and the others make my ears bleed. :P

Thanks!

Where to take my musical taste? by WollyGogin Music

[–]Escheria 1 point2 points ago

I just spent some time putting together this giant list of metal from various genres, math rock, and prog rock for another thread. Not the sort of thing you've been listening to, but if you want some variety to try, and particularly to get a feel for the different subgenres of metal, here you go.

I'm guessing the prog rock list is most suited to your tastes.

------- begin copied post ----------------

Scan through this interactive map of metal and see if any of it interests you. The different genres are far more different from one another than many who aren't into metal think, and even if you've never heard metal you like there might be something in there for you. Some of it has clean lyrics, if screaming/growls is abhorrent to you (it used to be to me, but now I love it when done well).

I suggest starting with technical and progressive metal, folk metal, and black metal. The first is self-explanatory, the second is a super-genre of different kinds of metal that incorporate traditional instruments and structures from various cultures, and the last is a dark atmospheric thing that I dislike but which might appeal to you.

Technical/Progressive

I'm not quite sure what to put in here and what not to, but I tried. Both ended up being instrumentals.

Animals as Leaders

Dream Theater - Raw Dog - not a fan of this band in general, but I like drums

Djent

This genre is new and controversial.

Circles

Periphery

Folk Metal

Whispered - Finish melodeath (melodic death? I'm still not sure if there's a difference) band that incorporates traditional Japanese instruments

Fu Xi - Chinese doom metal

Ego Fall - Chinese folk metal featuring tuvan throat singing

Tengger Cavalry - more Chinese folk metal with tuvan throat singing. This other track is softer and instrumental.

Karlahan - Catalonian death metal

Equilibrium - German melodeath

Power Metal

Power metal is the most melodramatically cheesy genre on the planet. It has clean, sort of operatic vocals.

  • Neonfly - this one is unknown enough that I've never seen it on reddit
  • Blind Guardian - this particular song is a rare example of acoustic metal
  • Freedom Call - cheese to the max

Ayreon is a supergroup that may or may not be metal, but it's certainly different, and I'm putting it near the power metal because of its drama and operatic vocals.

Black Metal

No bloody idea. Try the map of metal.

Avant-garde Metal

Unexpect, and another from a newer album. This is the most musical chaos I've ever heard, and it's fucking beautiful.

Diablo Swing Orchestra - swing + metal = this.

Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum

Koya Dot - I don't personally like this, so I have no example link, but it's quieter than the other avant-garde metal bands and some people love it.

Enough metal. Have you tried math rock? Defined as rock with angular melodies and changing and/or weird time signatures. I love the stuff.

Math Rock

What about Progressive Rock? Note that there's a lot of variety in this genre, so this isn't quite representative.

Progressive Rock

Rishloo

Closure in Moscow

Dredg

Fair to Midland

Karnivool

If you like this stuff, the escaping the ordinary compilations are great mixes. There are three volumes made with the consent of the artists and available for free download.

EDIT: formatting trouble. Only worked properly on the math rock and power metal sections. Damned if I know why. Oh well.

Power Metal

Power metal is the most melodramatically cheesy genre on the planet. It has clean, sort of operatic vocals. There is notable difference between european style power metal, which is what I am familiar with and is therefore in this list, and American power metal. If you dislike one you might still like the other.

Ayreon is a supergroup that may or may not be metal, but it's certainly different, and I'm putting it near the power metal because of its drama and operatic vocals.

I'm guessing you probably didn't mean to insult my entire half of the race with that comment and were instead referring to girlfriends who don't play video games, which I am aware there are many of. Nonetheless, please watch your language. Or if you meant what you said, fuck you.

Anyway, I agree that this would be a good game to play with someone who does not play games, and the coop is great with people who do know games as well.

The game is challenging but not frustrating, has excellent (but non-serious) story, music, and artwork, and has replayability value courtesy of a wide variety of ships and difficulty levels. I recommend it highly.

reddit, I've answered a lot your questions about being deaf, and I'd like you to return the favor. I have some questions about hearing. (Also, you can AMA about deafness) by Deafyin AskReddit

[–]Escheria 2 points3 points ago

Firstly, your descriptions are excellent. You are good people.

However,

Piercing generally implies a high pitched noise. This may not mean much to you, but imagine small humans, women more than men, producing a piercing scream/shriek (long/short), whereas larger humans, men more than women, would produce a heavier, deeper sound (you might even call it 'thundering'), because they have more mass to vibrate (I think, could use a scientific source).

Men have deeper voices because they have physically larger vocal cords (and larger adam's apples to accommodate said cords) than do women. Mens' vocal cords are more nickel sized, womens' are more dime sized. It's the same as how the thin strings on a guitar produce higher pitched sounds than the thick strings.

This is why people sometimes sound lower when they have laryngitis; if the vocal folds are swollen and thus bigger, they make lower pitched sounds. And if they are injured, you can end up with people like a woman I know who used to be a high soprano but is now a baritone (same pitch as a man's baritone) since suffering an injury to the throat and vocal cords.

Also, nitpicky and slightly off topic and probably doesn't matter, but I'd hardly describe men in general as thundering. Basses might, and sometimes baritones, but tenors don't. And none of them ever without an effort. But that depends on the definition of thundering, which is arguable.

[–]Escheria 0 points1 point ago

As someone who's taken classical singing lessons, I can tell you that you have to relax your jaw in order to hit the really high notes without squeaking or being in pain.

High pitch sounds are indeed felt more in the mouth and head, and low pitched ones rumble in the chest. The sound itself is made in the vocal chords in the throat, but it is amplified differently. I'm not an expert either, though.

That's how they reproduce. They're like spiders that get their heads bitten off when they mate; survival is secondary to reproduction.

So the leaf-eating bugger chomps down on it, and the eggs hatch in its guts. Wahaha.
