Why is Dynamic RAM is preferred in desktop PCs but Static RAM is preferred in embedded devices? by YayNewZealandin compsci

[–]Enlightenment777 3 points4 points ago

1 - To use DRAM, it requries a DRAM controller to refresh the DRAM. The controller takes up silicon space on the dice, which can raise the cost of the microcontrollers.

2 - Most embedded applications don't need crazy amounts of RAM, thus is why you don't see a DRAM Controller on them. Unfortunately if you need large amounts of RAM, most microcontrollers are immediately crossed off the list because they don't have a DRAM controller. I wish there were some popular microcontrollers with 8 to 32MB of DRAM inside the same chip and the more the better.

3 - DRAM can be a pain in the ass to initialize / setup / tweak, and you might have to make software changes to support alternate DRAM chips if you can't source older memory.

4 - You can't use DRAM without first configuring it and the DRAM controller. With SRAM, technically you could use JTAG in the microcontroller to download a program into SRAM, then immediately boot from the SRAM, which can be very helpful during development phases.

5 - If you stop the clock or DRAM controller during debug, then you lose everything. The best microcontrollers don't have issues, but some have weird problems during debug, so user beware.

The author is an idiot. It doesn't have jack shit to do with old people, it is all about people of power wanting to control everything and make you believe all their crap.

Anonymous names allows people to have alternate views and beliefs without other people causing you harm. If it wasn't for this...we sure the fuck couldn't talk about atheism and other less popular views.

Across Italy police are cracking down on Ferrari and Lamborghini drivers, but not because they are driving too fast. Italy, like so much of southern Europe, is drowning in debt, so police are pursuing drivers to make sure they are declaring and therefore paying taxes. by skreendreamz1in worldnews

When considering all buildings, most don't change very often, so Google Maps is a good place to start, and for the exceptions the governments just need to send out inspectors when current situation doesn't match.

In USA, they use Google Earth :-)

Edit#2 - The age of satellite view in USA varies a lot. Where I live, the view is higher-resolution and fairly recent, less than 1 year old, because of business construction hints. If I look 100 miles into a rural area, the maps are older and lower-resolution.

Just because you setup a storage unit to look like a home doesn't mean you actualy live there.

Impossible to do at most storage units, because lack of power.

Some places put their own locks on all the doors that are missing locks at the end of the day....so you would be fucked.

Man saves his son from falling off 35ft cliff, lets his vehicle fall. Cops give him 2 tickets. by Tron-Gorfin news

I'm sure the insurance papers thing could be argued in court and thrown out, especially if they were in the vehicle. I'm mostly sure they don't have to be on your person at all times.

I keep mine in my wallet, but in the past I use to keep them in the vehicle.

Tennessee Man loses $22,000 to cops. No charges filed, no arrest made. "If somebody told me this happened to them, I absolutely would not believe this could happen in America." That was the reaction of a New Jersey man who found out just how risky it can be to carry cash through Tennessee. by Mind_Virusin politics

One time going through customs, a customs agent ask me if I had any drugs, and I said yes. His eyes got real big. He asked what type, and I said perscriptions drugs, and he said "I meant illegal drugs, so get the heck out of here" (though he didn't say the word illegal when he originally asked me). It was pretty funny after I got through customs, but he might have been an asshole and ruined my day for it.

I'm working on a new shirt and I'd like to get /r/firefly's take on it before releasing it. I welcome constructive criticism. by DorkKnight27in firefly

[–]Enlightenment777 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure, but either one might have copyright or trademark issues.

If the person is creating just one shirt for himself, then he is probably safe. On the other hand, if the person is planning to sell the shirts, then he should be prepared for the worst, otherwise reality may pay him an ugly visit.
