Collection Naming Schemes by FrogsHaveShadowsin SCCM

[–]ElwoodDowd 0 points1 point ago

Here's an example of how our school district manages and names collections, for what it's worth: (30 schools)

As for naming based on software, we opted for the naming scheme above for the following reasons.

1) All application package based collections (full software installs) start with "App - " so they can easily be ordered or identified. Then "All, or Test, or Temp, or Config, or Reprort, or whatever the use of the collection might be, would have a standard named prefix.

2) After consideration, we came to the conclusion that the subset of users that need Acrobat Pro X are going to be the exact same users who are going to need Acrobat Pro XI when it comes out, and same for everything else. (Ex: Photoshop CS5, Photoshop CS6 - we do not run different versions of the same software around the district, everyone upgrades at the same time, then we build the package - this may not work so nicely if your environment) - The packages all have proper version numbers and naming, but we didnt see a reason to keep renaming or re-creating collections for each version of a product, so as you see in the picture, the collections are all in the format:

APP - LOCATION - MANUFACTURER - PRODUCT

It seems to be serving us well so far.

FURTHER INFO THAT MAY NOT BE OF USE:

For software, we think of collections in two ways, district-wide licensing, and school specific licensing.

Ex, in the picture: Our Adobe Acrobat Pro license is a district-wide 60 licenses (example, I don't have the real numbers handy), the package does not contain separate keys for each site, so it can go on all district computers, it is a district-wide package, and the collections are managed as such.

Now imagine that School A bought 5 licenses of Photoshop, on one key, and School-B bought a site license for Photoshop for all site machines on a different key. Each having a site-specific key inside the installer package. - that's where the school specific groups come in. 'Core' groups are all machines at a site, so full-site-licensed software gets advertised to the Core groups. ('App - School-B Core' for Photoshop for example, or 'App - District Core' for something like Paint.Net, which is core for all machines.)

So probably none of that was very useful if you only have one purchasing institution or site, but I thought it relevant due to the nature of SCCM and multi-sites.

I'm a little late to the game, but my favorite click-saver not-yet mentioned here is Start --> Run --> ncpa.cpl

Takes you right to your network connections, which since Vista\7 has been way too many clicks.

You say 'other movie' like Boogie Nights is his only other film! I think all of his films are great. There's nothing quite like Punch Drunk Love, and Magnolia is a masterpiece.

Advertisments-Run from DP, or download locally? by armorallin SCCM

[–]ElwoodDowd 0 points1 point ago

I know both are possible. In the implementation where I work, we do software after OSD (machines fall into collections after OS load via queries based on the computer's group membership, and we have AD groups for most software configurations). We have our OSDs run directly from DP as opposed to downloading, as the frist step in an OSD TS is usually the format/partition. - Software after the OSD is then downloaded first, unless it is too large for the cache size (like an adobe suite).

So basically: OSDs and other > 5gb packages = run from DP, otherwise download locally. Seems to work best for us, after much testing.

When no one texts me back by bosephhin funny

[–]ElwoodDowd 0 points1 point ago

I'm completely in agreement with everything you said there, except that when I eventually read the text/see the notification that I missed a text (because missed texts do happen a lot) I will reply to it regardless, if only with a 'just read this now' or similar.

Exceptions being the obvious; Ex: Missed a "meet you there" and only read it after you have met the person 'there' at talked to them in person.

It just seems that in this day and age, there is a fairly high probability of the message arriving, and it feels - to me - like someone has ignored a package you've sent in the mail. Doubly so with iMessage or BBM when you know the phone received the message, and at some point the person had to clear the notification.

It just feels the same as though you've said something to someone face-to-face and they just walked away. They got a message and decided not to reply. Period. I just think that it's rude.

Disclaimer: I have been told that I am bananas.

Are you talking about OSD task sequences? Or a custom TS?

If OSD, is it an OSD with software packages after OS?

Advertisments-Run from DP, or download locally? by armorallin SCCM

[–]ElwoodDowd 0 points1 point ago

Hash error usually means that the files have changed in the package's source location since you deployed it to DPs.

If this is the case: 1 • Don't ever edit your source files after creating a package unless you need to. 2 • If you need to, me sure to update all DPs with a new source version (which you can watch increment under Package Status)

In our environment, we have pretty much everything download locally, all except for packages that are too bog for the 5GB default cache size. Ex: Adobe suites. - No problems so far.

Exactly.

Non-urgent is not the same as unimportant.

If I didn't care about the response, why would I write/send the message in the first place...
