No such luck in the new patch. But yeah, reddit knows about it at least.

TIL cable did not have commercials until around 1980 by generalchaozin todayilearned

[–]EatingSteak -1 points0 points ago

As user 'Cydeweys' pointed out, your 97% figure is WAY off. It's more in the neighborhood of 20-40%. Laying cable is simply not expensive. Many cities have pre-existing conduit just for those functions, and many pre-planned housing developments run these cables at the same time they do electricity for almost zero marginal cost.

In my area, a small city, we can DSL for about $30, or Cable Modem for about $30/mo from Service Electric or RCN, or for about $45 from Comcast. The latter just because they charge more; the physical cables are just dumb pipes little different from your power lines, you can get service from any provider.

Comcast always pushes the upsell (Triple Play bullshit) just because they want to squeeze more money out of you. Don't let them confuse you with complex words like 'subsidize', that's just 'French' for lining their pockets.

TIL cable did not have commercials until around 1980 by generalchaozin todayilearned

[–]EatingSteak 4 points5 points ago

My bullshit detector went off immediately on that paragraph... it's complete crap. I live in the Lehigh Valley, where Cable TV was essentially invented. The cables in our neighborhood are basically the original ones laid... they don't do SHIT to upgrade anything, and I don't think they have in 40-59 years. Hell, it wss 2005 before they even offered two-way cable internet. 2005. I live in the suburbs in a nice area, not the sticks.

So I'm thinking: at 97%, if this is basically the bread and butter of their business and expense, then why don't I ever see Service Electric backhoes out laying new cable? Typically it's just a van every he and there probably just hooking up a new customer or looking at someone's DVR unit. Even better, a lot of that 'new cable' money is subsidized by the government.

If his 97% turned out to be 92% or 88% or even 81%, I don't think I'd haggle, but I call Shenanigans. Your 30% figure sounds much more accurate (I just said it's the Technical plus half the customer service).

Never works for me. I always do the same thing (even make them type it), and show them the solution.

Inevitable response "I don't get it".

I'll give them a few benefit-of-the-doubts, for example

  • Computer is bluescreening or randomly shutting off Can be any one of 100 problems, almost impossible to pinpoint if you don't know what you're doing.

  • Some program says I have a virus and Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work. Fuck you for getting that in the first place, but this thing is a royal pain in the ass to get rid of. At least 10 or so steps, and I'd be surprised if an amateur could do that correctly.

On the latter, which happened to my mom twice, I just deleted all the Internet Explorer shortcuts everywhere, wiped all the file associations & changed defaults, hid the IE folder, and changed the Firefox icon to the 'e'.

I simply refuse to diagnose:

  • "It's running slow"

  • "It's not working"

  • "My computer hates me"

  • "I don't know how to do ___".

  • "Oh, uh, I didn't read the error message"

  • "How do I set a wifi password?"

Bitch, rtfm.

I'd really like to know more about this class on Memorial Day, it'd certainly be news to me.

Personally, I'd prefer if they split up fall Pacing Break, and just had that Mon off, and Memorial Day off, and just have Monday's classes on a Tuesday for one day. Would like to have two 3-day weekends as opposed to a single 4-day.

Other than that... you need the total amount of class/lab time, unless you'd rather extend the semester another week or come in on a Saturday.

I went to public school in grade school, and I can't remember ever getting Columbus Day or any minor holidays off. Other than that... yeah wait till you get a job then come back and cry about college breaks.

Scientific American Ranks Energy Storage Technologies by glmoryin energy

[–]EatingSteak 0 points1 point ago

I think one of the biggest obstacles when you're getting into engineering is not getting too hung up on units. You'll find journalism-natured articles mess them up constantly, but at the same time not be completely incorrect.

Say you have 'X' number of high-capacity batteries, each with a capacity of 'Y' MAh, which is a measure of energy. Sometimes you have to 'make up' the correct units yourself, which I expect is the case here. You know all those batteries have a certain peak and average discharge rate.

So, they'd have to take 'Z' hours to discharge their capacity, you just made up a Power number (X*Y/Z) from an energy number. Quite often journalists just go and pick that XY/Z number, compare it to total power usage, and say "the power capacity is only X". Frustrating, but commonplace.

Solar panels really irked me the same way, with their pricing measured in "$/Watt". This seems like nonsense to me, as I measure MY power and energy usage in $/kWh/mo and $/kWh, respectively.

What "$/Watt" means in non-fictional units is "total price of the system, divided by the peak power output (sunny day at noon at summer solstice)".

So while that $/Watt number doesn't make immediate sense, and most people reporting it to you probably don't know what it means, there's still some element of truth and reality behind it, just with this hydrogen storage.

A Plan to Save Us From Global Warming? Industry's Colossal Experiment With the Future of Civilization at Stake | | AlterNet, Peter Montague, 2/15/12 by bdirnbacin environment

[–]EatingSteak 1 point2 points ago

Carbon sequestration is nonsense. Period.

  • Case A - you believe CO2 emission is inert. Then why not just dump it into the atmosphere?

  • Case B - you believe CO2 emission is bad. So why is pumping it into groundwater good then? Does it just 'go away', like everything else you dump into the ground?

Of course, any Armageddon-esque headline warning of the 'future of our civilization' being at stake is hard to take seriously.

But.... Carbon Sequestration is a fucking stupid idea, no matter how you feel about CO2.

  • CO2 = natural, then why waste the money?

  • CO2 = bad/greenhouse/demise of humanity, then burying it doesn't make it disappear.

The Sling: GREAT WEAPONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD by klmdin AnythingGoesNews

[–]EatingSteak 0 points1 point ago

Through rough back-of-the-envelope calculations, you'd have to be throwing the shot at 300 m/s. For reference, a Glock 9mm shoots at 375.

A baseball pitcher can throw at roughly 90mph. I seriously doubt you'd beat a pro tennis serve, at 120-140mph. Your magic minute-long-hang-time would be around 600mph.

tl;dr - no, you didn't.

The Sling: GREAT WEAPONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD by klmdin AnythingGoesNews

[–]EatingSteak 0 points1 point ago

I'm quite familiar with both weapons. The way I see it, a sling vs. a bow is sort of like a dagger vs. a spear: they both exist for a reason, but except for specific situations, you'd probably be better off with the spear.

The show The Deadliest Warrior is absolutely awesome if you're into this stuff. They've had a few appearances of the sling, notably with the Gladiator. Generally speaking, the sling didn't measure up well.

  • Arrows win hands-down for accuracy. Throughout many appearances, archers could easily hit a stationary target in the eye, and consistently hit moving targets fatally (major artery, etc). Slings were so-so.

  • Arrows win hands-down on range. The sling isn't nearly as accurate at range. Also, air resistance was slowing them down enough to make them non-lethal.

  • Slings were largely non-lethal. Unless you got a head shot, it was nearly impossible to land a fatal blow with a sling, even using lead shot. Even the experts had trouble pushing over 100mph, and anything less than that simply isn't a kill shot.

  • The sling would definitely win in high wind, although they didn't test it on the show. However, in the article, they definitely overstate the effect of rain; unless it's really windy, arrows hardly fly differently at all, I find it quite easy to shoot in the rain.

From the article:

"Arrows, unless barbed and deep in the victim, are easier to extract"

Many/most were, and making barbed isn't much more time-consuming than making a traditional arrow head. In The Deadliest Warrior, arrows very consistently pierced about 1.5 inches into flesh.

  • Armor - even padded leather is sufficient to neutralize stone and take away crippling effects of shot.

Julius Caesar writes about clay shot being heated before slinging, so that it might set light to thatch.

Nice try, Julius.

There was also a belief, presumably false, that sling bullets got white hot as they flew through the air

As a tl;dr for the episode, against an opponent with leather armor, the sling hardly more effective than throwing rocks.

Lead melts at a much, much lower temperature than that.

When iron plate-armoured Spaniards went into South America against the Aztecs, ...the sling stones would damage the Spaniards by sheer smashing force.

I call shenanigans.

Thanks for the interesting read though, sorry to pick it apart. The sling definitely wins for versatility, ease of construction (really just minutes, and out of anything), but for power, accuracy, and potency, the arrow wins, hands down.

Those are some pretty impressive zeroes to be putting up for a season, and it seems like that'd be the core.

But as a numbers guy, I have to ask, seriously, that's it? I was thinking something along the lines of

  • of running plays with contact in the backfield

  • of plays where RB breaks through D-Line without contact (ie, a good fucking block)

  • Average # of seconds before your block breaks into the pocket

I also understand the idea of overthinking the numbers side, and a lot of the time "just do good" works well enough. But you ever considered more detailed stats?

Guidelines for Buying New Jeans by EatingSteakin malefashionadvice

Most people like to wear them while sitting in the tub so that they don't shrink too much.

Hm.... maybe that was the missing link I was looking for. I was looking at the denim guide and it said to let them air dry after soaking for a number of minutes, but if they're soaking, how would they be "fitting" at the same time?

Ok, you sit in the bathtub with the damn things. Fuck that shit. Thanks for the warning; glad I didn't just ruin a new pair of jeans.
