Something that is intellectually insightful/stimulating/interesting...

How are those last three you mentioned? I haven't heard of them!

Why is Marxism so misunderstood? by LeonHotskyin philosophy

Even if everybody in /r/communism did have flair like that, isn't the argument you are trying to make fallacious?

Like an appeal to authority, or an appeal to population?

I used to think the number Seven had the most badass personality as a kid.

And also, Zero was a bodybuilder who ate very healthy.

I'm sure I had strange associations with other numbers but these are the ones that come to mind.

Beautiful song. I'm a beginner at singing so I'll refrain from trying to give any advice. You're way better than me anyways.

I think it sounded great overall though. You could definitely benefit from a better recording device!

Ideas for a Philosophy Club by Theredbearonin philosophy

[–]December23 5 points6 points ago

Hey man, I'm also president of a philosophy club on my local campus.

We just started ours three weeks ago. I was wondering if you had any ideas or tips you could pass along to make it worthwhile and successful? (maybe what worked well for you originally?).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Is the KONY 2012 movement exploitative? by Moegainin philosophy

[–]December23 7 points8 points ago

As well as that he runs a charity that uses most of its donations to fly him and his friends back and forth to Africa, with fancy camera equipment to make films to show to American schoolkids, piquing more interest in raising donations for their charity to fly back and forth to africa and to give funds to a countries military that have a record for using rape and pillaging.

This would change my perspective of the organization. Source?

I'm not sure, but I think the number would refer to the octave. The letter is the note.

TIL that Mother Teresa "felt no presence of God whatsoever" during the last 50 years of her life--In her own words: "I have no faith." by zanyplebeianin todayilearned

[–]December23 0 points1 point ago*

His point is that Teresa did question the existence of God. He was replying to the quote that said she never did.

In other words, Bluejay was originally quoting the rev who said '...and that while she pined for the lost sentiment of closeness with God, she did not question his existence.'

and F0rd was adding to the discussion with the direct quote from Teresa showing that it seemed as though she did, in fact, have doubts.. and that the previous quote from the reverend doesn't seem congruent, when her actual words are taken into account.

I can't stop eating. Why can't I stop!? by logimanin AskReddit

[–]December23 0 points1 point ago

If you have junk food in the house, throw it away. Same goes with anything else you don't want to eat.

Apart from that, it's largely a matter of self control. If you have unbearable snacking urges, snack on something healthy like berries or fruit (or maybe some types of nuts).

I don't mind it. I mean definitely if they are being obnoxious with memes, but if they are just talking about the site in general or discussing something cool they saw on it.. then I see no reason to really feel bothered by it.

Why do Americans glorify wars? by thesunwillalwayshinein AskReddit

[–]December23 3 points4 points ago*

I understand what you are saying, but it is my opinion that you are dehumanizing the reality of war and conflict by blanketing the military under the notion that it's just a tool and isn't responsible for anything. The military is composed of many individuals that have moral responsibilities. Even if they became free of ethical judgement the moment they enlist (as they would if they became tools), I think my argument would stand unchanged. If a person wants to give up his ability to think independently, forfeit their ethical notions to an increasingly detached and changing political (by political I mean government) institution, and become solely an instrument of that institution, then he/she should be held responsible for what results in accordance to that decision.

I never mentioned that the military should be political, I am saying that individuals should not be applauded for forfeiting themselves to an institution that is currently leading campaigns that can very easily be argued as unjustified and tragic, not based because of political affiliation, but based on common standards of morality which we as a developed country share (human life for example).

Why do Americans glorify wars? by thesunwillalwayshinein AskReddit

[–]December23 10 points11 points ago*

Yeah it seems to be pretty ingrained in American culture to 'support the troops' absolutely. Not really sure why.. I personally think it's ridiculous that the act of putting on a uniform somehow makes you a hero. People should be looking at individual actions to determine who is a hero. They should also stop with the black and white thinking when it comes to wars and human life. If people cared to look at the civilian death tolls in Afghanistan and Iraq, they would be pretty disgusted. A lot of the patriotism in the US honestly seems to be somewhat blind. People make sure to dodge holding soldiers accountable for perpetuating wars under the old excuse 'blame the government, not the soldiers!'. Under that logic, do soldiers become exempt from all ethics so long as its the government calling the shots over the radio? IMO if they enlist knowing what they are getting into.. then they should be held responsible for being apart of any unethical or unjustified war. The banner of a US flag doesn't shield you from this.

NoFap community, a little bit too extreme? by December23in NoFap

[–]December23 4 points5 points ago*

I can understand where you are coming from.. I think rebooting does have great benefits (like you said: ED, attraction, motivation), but at the same time I feel like people should try not to go overboard, and they shouldn't be looking to find the devil in their sexuality. Some claims are healthier and more beneficial than others. Example: Relating orgasms, in and of themselves, with depression and anger.. can cause more issues down the line than they can solve. Same goes with anything that (without sufficient evidence) tries to associate MO with another negative attribute (say sickness). I want to say that beliefs like that can become a Self Fulfilling Prophecy but I'm not sure if that's the right term. :P

Question concerning Paine's Age of Reason by scorzin atheism

[–]December23 0 points1 point ago*

You could be a theist (specifically even a Deist) and still believe in natural selection or evolution. The question of theism/atheism would be 'what started the mechanism of life and from where did the universe originate?'

Natural selection does not really answer that question.
