Health care costs for a family of four covered by a preferred provider plan rises to $20,728 per year in 2012, an increase of 6.9% over 2011 and up almost 70% in 2005. by MR_Rictusin Economics

You're right and there is another force at play here, too. The higher the premiums, the more they make, so they have an incentive to allow costs to balloon. Even if their profit were federally capped at just 1% of annual premiums, they still have every reason to allow costs to soar. 1% of $1000/mo is 10 times more money than 1% of $100/mo. As long as private insurance is profit driven, they will do very little to institute longterm controls on rising healthcare expenses because it is ultimately not in their interests to do so.

Half Of Americans Think Facebook Is A Passing Fad - Business Insider by bullbear420in business

[–]Davezter 18 points19 points ago

I've thought a lot about this and I've narrowed it down to the fact that it makes me feel bad. I do relatively well, not rich by any means, but I'm able to comfortably support a family of four just on my income and make my mortgage payments on time. I'm generally happy with life in general. When I browse Facebook, I'm deluged with status updates of people I know who are travelling through Europe, taking their kids to Disney world, buying a new car, getting a job promotion, etc... And when I log off, I'm less content with my life than I was before and I have no reason to be. I may have some character defect and it may just be me.

Half Of Americans Think Facebook Is A Passing Fad - Business Insider by bullbear420in business

I used to think it was a passing fad, but not anymore. I know people who are only sending out engagement party invites through Facebook. I think it has ingrained itself into our culture to a point far beyond AOL in its heyday. When people are relying on it for engagement party invitations it is beyond fad. That said, I wish it was a passing fad.

Ok Reddit, Background Check time. Got this Resume at my store. Can we verify this somehow, or is he full of it? by esquinatoin WTF

[–]Davezter 0 points1 point ago

Right. In the US, copyright is said to exist the exact moment someone creates an original work. Filing for copyright is not necessary and is much different from filing to get a registered trademark or to be granted a patent. Having the government give you an official copyright on paper doesn't make you the owner now or in the future. It's the act of creating the original content that makes someone the true copyright owner, not receiving a piece of paper from the government.

[–]Davezter 0 points1 point ago

Filing for copyright is totally optional and serves no added purpose other than providing a sort of database of people and companies who want to let the world easily look up who the claimed author of something is. Getting a copyright doesn't make someone the owner now or ever, it just gets their name in the proverbial phonebook of people who are claiming to be authors.

People who walk around with guns all day are telling everyone around them that they're scared and frightened and probably aren't too bright. If that's how you want to be perceived, by all means, I support your right to be labelled that way. But you are not a superhero crime fighter and no one sees you that way.

Where are you spending your time that you are so surrounded by criminals all the time that you have to have a gun on you everywhere you go in Oklahoma? Maybe that says more about your own choices.

There's always the option of joining the rest of civilized society and not strutting around with a gun playing cowboy when it's too hot outside.

Not true. You don't even have to file anything at all to have instant copyright ownership of any original content. As long as you have proof that you were the original author, no one else can own it even if they file for copyright.

Really? Had to explain this to my 6 year old by cman95andin WTF

[–]Davezter 3 points4 points ago

Ya, I don't know that this is currently possible with today's technology, either, but I was just participating in the parent's thought experiment. If we get to the day when fetal brainwaves can be easily detected then that might offer some people a clearer answer to the question of "when can we abort and still call it ethical?"

Really? Had to explain this to my 6 year old by cman95andin WTF

[–]Davezter 7 points8 points ago

How about drawing an ethical line in the sand regarding the existence of a functioning central nervous system with accompanying brainwave activity? We could allow abortions prior to that point on the grounds that in the absence of those qualifications, a fetus is essentially the same thing as a brain dead vegetable which society currently removes from life support all the time and call it being humane. It would be both ethical and consistent with how we currently treat the brain dead. I don't know exactly how many weeks that allows for an abortion, though...I think it might be 6-10 weeks.

Letter to the Editor: President David Boren responds about university's budget by howstrangeinnocencein sooners

I like his point that when the public is only funding 17 percent of the annual budget, it won't be long before the school isn't "public" anymore.

I will caution others to be careful about the brother mfc9840cdw duplex/fax/flatbed/color/wireless. Toner is cheap, but page curl is extremely bad and the automatic document feeder scans everything crookedly. It'll get the job done cheaply, just don't expect it to be top notch. For my important stuff, I use a Lexmark 532cdn...expensive as hell toner. For casual stuff I use the brother to save money.

Investors like to invest in the coolest product/service they just purchased/used and liked. Might be the company that made the app they just bought, could be a chicken wing restaurant they enjoy, or a coupon company they used to get a good deal on something. They think that if they like the product that others will too and don't spend a ton of time figuring out the validity of the business model or other details.

Fellow Okies, I'm looking for your testimonials about television service quality from U-Verse, DISH, and DirecTV. And if you have any knowledge of how they compare with COX, that would also be appreciated! by Davezterin oklahoma

[–]Davezter[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's interesting. When I spoke to the u-verse lady, she told me that I could not keep Cox for internet bc it would "interfere" with their equipment and I would have to use them for internet, too. How did you manage a workaround? Did uverse install a splitter on an outlet?

Why so little interest in the Columbia Secret Service prostitute scandal on Reddit as compared to the popular media? by HappyGlucklichJrin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Davezter 0 points1 point ago

bc it is a non-issue. the secret service is an apolitical organization and a few of its members screwed up as and have paid the price. what's left for anyone to get worked up over? the media thinks sex always sells and tried hard to sell this, but it's a very boring story for a sex story.
