But to say that one is more real/valid of an experiences of a culture is unfair to all the people who are born and raised in that city. To them their lifestyle/city is as "Chinese" or whatever culture is as any other. For many people living in China the "real" China (the culture and lifestyle) is not rice paddies and mules pulling dirt carts. Its living in a small to medium city working some kind of job.

I would say for Shanghai you could probably see most of the city in 3-4 days, but here are the big hi-lights. I might expect a itinerary to be similar to this.

Day 1 Northern Shanghai and Pudong

Morning: Yu Yuan Walk from Peoples Square to the Bund. Maybe hit Pudong for the towers.

Afternoon/Night: Historical Stuff Morning: Fuxing Park, Zhou Enlai former residence, walk the old french concession. Jing'an Temple in Jing'an, First meeting of the Communist park of China in Xintandi

Day 2: Water Cities and old towns

Morning: Qibao old City in Hongqiao and Dapuqiao (Tianzifang) in Luwan

Afternoon/Night: Zhujiazhao water city outside of Shanghai (Bus from peoples square)

Extras would be other nice parks/places: Luwan Martyrs Cemetery / Buddhist temple, Guilin Park, Xujiahui Jesuit Church and Library (only on Saturdays). 上海人, did I miss anything?
