Why I wish I didn't know some people... by dubleain talesfromtechsupport

[–]DamienCIsDead 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand how people can live like this. It's freaking disgusting.

And the DV7 is a fine laptop. It's a shame to see one treated literally like dirt.

Can this computer run Diablo 3 by markwlukin computers

[–]DamienCIsDead 1 point2 points ago

This PC is fine.

D3 runs great on my HP DV6, which has a 7690m and a 2.2GHz AMD A8-3550MX. Running on high settings with medium shadows, 1920x1080.

That Envy 15 should run it even better with its i7 CPU.

Can somebody suggest a reasonably priced laptop that will run Diablo 3? by LTxDukein computers

[–]DamienCIsDead 1 point2 points ago

There are some online retailers that I trust, like Newegg, TigerDirect and CDW. Even Amazon has a pretty good selection of laptops.

Places like Staples, Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart are okay to buy from, they usually just don't have as wide of a selection as online retailers.

I'm quite happy with my HP DV6z Quad Edition.

Base model is currently on sale for $549.99 and should handle D3 quite well on medium settings.

Personally, I threw in a few upgrades (AMD A8-3550MX CPU for $50, AMD Radeon 7690m GPU for $75, and 1080p matte LCD for $150) and I'm glad I got them. With the upgrades, D3 runs great at 1920x1080.

Edit: Also might want to give /r/SuggestALaptop a shot. I believe they have a list of the best bang-for-buck laptops in the sidebar.

Tales of a Public School Tech Pt. 2- Dual Monitor Fail by nirvandal09in talesfromtechsupport

[–]DamienCIsDead 39 points40 points ago

I hate giving people dual monitors. There are a select few people where I am who are actually tech savvy and can handle them, but most people just want them to show off to people.

Standard procedure for most users where I am:

  1. Badger IT department for new monitor. After the 20th time we tell them to use the ticket system, finally a ticket shows up.

  2. Complain that it took too long to get them one (since we had to get approval for the purchase which takes about a week, along with the delay from them not putting a ticket in)

  3. Complain that they're too busy and they couldn't possibly stop their super important work to get their new monitor they begged for installed

  4. New monitor finally installed - Set resolution to 800x600 on both, with mirrored desktop.

Can't figure out what graphics card I have by magenta_chocoboin computers

[–]DamienCIsDead 2 points3 points ago

Go to HP.com, click "support and drivers" at the top, click "drivers and software," enter your laptop model (dv4t-1400) then click "search," select an OS then click "next," scroll down, click the little blue + symbol next to "Driver - Graphics," then check the list.

According to that list your model should have either an Intel HD 4000 series integrated graphics processor, or an nVidia 105M. Both are probably unsuitable for D3 btw; if the game even runs, it will probably run poorly.

One of my colleagues straddles a fine line between helpful and condescending... by Vusysin talesfromtechsupport

Not sure, I've never tried it. The program does have an option to stream video/audio via URL, but like I said I never used it before for that.

If you just want to play MP3s, it's probably the best app out there for that. It's lightweight and not a resource hog. Something about VLC makes me hate it for playing audio.

Plus you can still use the "classic" skin from 1999.

I will edit the original post if either item is bought or traded for.

The mouse wheel and side buttons do light up (in an aesthetically pleasing green color).

I wouldn't mind $30 considering I paid $70 for it and it still works great and I have the box and all.

Brother printer support? HA. by MR337in talesfromtechsupport

[–]DamienCIsDead 1 point2 points ago

I have a Brother HL2170W printer that does the same thing. I did a lot of Googling a while back when I bought it and apparently all Brothers do this, and it's especially bad with wireless network printers.

I live check to check so a new printer is out of the question. I never did find a resolution, and now I just turn my printer on when I need it (which is rarely) and off the rest of the time.

My rationale: if it can't go to sleep, I won't have trouble waking it. :P

Scumbag Apple charges $210 for $20 worth of Memory by dblock187in computers

[–]DamienCIsDead 4 points5 points ago

As much as I don't care for Apple, every other OEM does this as well.

I just bought an HP laptop; configured it with the cheapest RAM choice available, bought RAM I wanted (2 x 4gb DDR3-1666) from Newegg for $40, then dumped the RAM they gave me on eBay for whatever I could get.

Definitely better than spending the extra $200 HP wanted me to spend for 8gb.

A "laptop" from 1988 came in today by TechGoatin computers

[–]DamienCIsDead 0 points1 point ago

You should try throwing it on eBay, there's a niche market for "vintage" PCs and some stuff goes for a surprising amount of money.

Not too long I was looking for some parts for an old 386 I still have, and some of the components were expensive as hell.

Dell has gotten more dumb than dumb. Introducing, the N5110! by rebeldefectorin talesfromtechsupport

[–]DamienCIsDead 0 points1 point ago

They probably do this to discourage upgrading in the hopes that average non-tech-inclined folk will just buy a new laptop.

I've seen a few systems like this; mostly low end notebooks and netbooks. Most mid-range stuff is still easy to upgrade & maintain. My Acer 5552G I just sold had an easy to access upgrade bay where the RAM, HD and WiFi card could be removed. Same thing with my new HP DV6z.

Good guy HP repair technician (maybe you're here) by kiteboyin talesfromtechsupport

[–]DamienCIsDead 7 points8 points ago

HP most likely outsources their warranty repairs to an outside vendor. I know that they did this with the company I used to work at about 5 or 6 years ago.

We did warranty repairs on all their business-class laptops at the time. At first it was great because our depot was only under contract to repair about 60 laptops a day and we could handle that pretty well. We eventually got so good that we could replace a system board in a busted laptop in about 15 minutes, and usually spent the extra time cleaning them and even going out of our way to fix OS issues (which we were generally told to ignore).

Then one of our idiot bosses told HP that we could handle 300 (!!!) laptops per day, and we stopped giving a shit because we were swamped with work. Even working overtime, there was no way for us to meet the quota and all seven of my bosses (no shit, just like Office Space) would literally make rounds of the depot floor and watch over our shoulders and complain that we were working too slow.

They eventually hired 5 or so temporary technicians to come in and help, and they were the most stereotypical bunch of barely competent nerds I've ever met.

One guy refused to follow our safety procedures for grounding and destroyed pretty much every system board he touched.

Another guy was a socially inept close-talker that wouldn't shut up about gaming and do his damn work.

A third guy was so proud of studying for his A+ and passing with flying colors, having never touched a computer in his life. When he finally HAD to fix one, he literally had no clue what to do and would stand around pretending to work for eight hours before management caught on and fired him.

And of course, who could forget the guy who had such terrible BO that everyone else flat out refused to come within 20 feet of him. When one manager finally told him that he needed to take a shower before coming in the next day, the guy walked out (without saying anything) on the spot and never came back.

Ultimately, since we didn't meet the 300-per-day quota, we lost the account. This was right around when the recession was hitting in 2008. They thankfully didn't fire anyone, but I got fed up after two weeks of LITERALLY having nothing to do and being told by my bosses to "sweep my workbench area" for the hundredth time.

TL;DR HP outsources their repairs to companies who may or may not give a shit about quality or turnaround time.
