If a deciduous tree is maintained at a constant, warm temperature (i.e. kept in an artificial 'constant summer') will it shed its leaves periodically, or will it continue to act as if it is still summer? by maxdaman11in askscience

The leaves in Europe around 50 degrees latitude grow leaves before the leaves in Pennsylvania at 40 degrees latitude. There must be more to it than just sunlight hours.

Counting just the upvotes is lunacy because that number is made up. Only the total is real.

This works as a theft deterrent camouflage. There's no way I see that car and wonder if there is anything valuable in the back.

Have I made a great accomplishment by not knowing this guy was a celebrity while I watched this video? I was thinking it's not a very good video, but now that I realize he is a celebrity I think common people are held to a higher standard of quality by the internet.

Once the primaries are over, it's all about the moderate vote. Moderates tend to support gay marriage.

I Calculated The Number Of NFL Players Each State Produces Per Capita And Made A Chart Ranking Them. (x-post from /r/CFB) by moby323in sports

[–]CowWithBeef -2 points-1 points ago

It's pretty much a race map. Black athletes are better than non-blacks at most positions. Only kicker, punter, and quarterback are dominated by white players. Offensive line is more balanced but still seems to be at least a black plurality. However given current per capita statistics, if there were as many Samoans in the USA as there are other races, Samoans would dominate several positions. The small differences between the races make a big difference in football because each position is so specialized.

Unfortunately for your argument, Sweden also has very France like rates and service with an even lower population density than the USA.

"If this ruling is upheld, YouTube will be held liable for the contents uploaded by its users." - New German law forcing Youtube to pay copyright fines by Octosaurusin worldnews

[–]CowWithBeef 2 points3 points ago

By making the company liable for the actions of its user base, we are setting up a situation where a lot of mistakes will be made. The damages of removing videos that are not actually infringing on copyright never get paid so it turns into this situation where false positives are preferred to missed positives. The big players can kill the small players before they get started.

The real goal is prevention of replacement of the existing business model which Megaupload was most certainly doing when it started signing stars. The RIAA and MPAA know piracy doesn't hurt very much, but to lose their oligopoly on talent would.

Currently a 1st year EE. For those of you who are practicing electrical engineers (especially those in instrumentation/controls/systems), how often do you run into projects where knowledge of different engineering specialties becomes an asset? by awaythrow0000in AskEngineers

[–]CowWithBeef 1 point2 points ago

I'm an ME crossing paths with EE's frequently. I'm glad I can understand V=IR, P=IV, capacitance, EM forces, and dielectric stress. I had to teach myself some extra EE once I got the job. If I looked at these problems and just said "not my field," I would be a less capable engineer. Definitely learn all you can about whatever interests you, and be ready to learn more when your job can use it.

I think your first paragraph will be enough to get you a good job. You're doing it right.

Advice for a ME student by collinsca1in AskEngineers

[–]CowWithBeef 2 points3 points ago

Over the next 3 years, you'll probably have lots of dream jobs, but you'll end up doing something you didn't expect to do and really enjoy doing. It's pretty tough to predict what you'll really like doing, especially when you're at the beginning of your studies.

If you're creative, open minded, work well with other engineers, aren't too proud to admit when you're wrong, and capable of visualizing and understanding mechanical systems quickly, R&D will be great for you. To get into the suit thing specifically, you'll want to work for a defense contractor, but don't be surprised if those companies see other uses for you. It's tough to start on the exact type of machine you want to build. You may have more control deciding what projects you are on while you're in school. Inquire about those.

Getting an internship with a defense contractor would help, but you're almost certainly going to need to know someone on the inside.
