Jury: Google did not infringe Oracle patents with Android by pentahelixin technology

[–]CoreDuo08 8 points9 points ago

I believe it is well known that Google did some technical jujitsu in order to be able to claim that the AndroidVM was not Java.

Oracle's argument never was whether or not Dalvik was Java in the strictest sense of the definition, it was that Google used APIs (and a few lines of code) derived from the Java VM that were allegedly copyrighted and changing the implementation was not enough in order to be classified as "fair use". Oracle probably already knew they would have netted zilch trying to sue Google over using a programming language, so instead they decided to sue over the APIs, a legal grey area in the United States since to my knowledge, it's never been tried in court until now.

The problem here is that there is an incredible amount of open source projects that use this same technique, not only Google and not only in programming language translation tools. Projects like Wine and ReactOS use different methods of implementing Win32-compatible APIs, and the Mesa3D project uses different methods of implementing OpenGL-compatible APIs. Oracle seems to be a lone wolf that believes that all of this is questionably legal, so one has to wonder what their ulterior motives are.

Nikola Tesla Wasn't God And Thomas Edison Wasn't The Devil - Forbes by shatteredmindofbobin TrueReddit

Now that you mention it, the Soviets in C&C Red Alert 2 had a pretty heavy emphasis on the usage of Tesla technology. It was simple, deadly, and most importantly cheap to build, giving the Soviets a defensive edge over the Allies. I played as the Soviets almost exclusively until Yuri's Revenge came out because of all the cool shit you could build. Not only did you have the Tesla coils, but you also had the Tesla generators which were apparently developed around the same time, as well as Tesla troopers, Tesla tanks, and MAD tanks that were equipped with earthquake generators. There were some other weapons that used Tesla research as well such as the Iron Curtain and the AI for the sentry guns.

Damnit, now I want to go play it again.

That's the thing: if it was too horrible to show when Honeycomb devices came out, why is it no biggie now?

Because there were two major versions (3.1, 3.2) and a further two minor versions (3.2.1, 3.2.2) prior to the release of ICS and the accompanying Honeycomb code drop in November last year that gave them multiple opportunities to do significant cleanups of the code over the course of about 9 months. They did need a usable code base to build Android 4.0 off of, after all.

This isn't exactly conspiracy theory material.

Why PC memory no longer matters | TechRadar by manirelliin buildapc

[–]CoreDuo08 1 point2 points ago

The article's points about memory speed are only half-true. Modern CPU designs are more heavily relying on integrating GPUs on-die, so memory bandwidth is marginally more important in that respect. This won't change until they start integrating dedicated RAM for the GPU as well. It's particularly true in AMD's APU designs where a fairly potent GPU shares the memory bus with the CPU. This kind of design strategy isn't x86 exclusive either, it's extremely common amongst ARM vendors as well.

I'm not sure I agree with that, because the point I was trying to make is that Apple is simply a customer to Samsung. Apple would be at a loss because Samsung is quicker than most at ramping up new process technologies and normally among the first to introduce things like DRAM and NAND flash on those processes such as the 4Gb 20nm-class LPDDR2 announced today as well as having LPDDR3 and DDR4 samples shipping as early as the middle of last year. Furthermore, using Samsung's foundries meant that they could avoid the 28nm dog-pile currently plaguing TSMC that would have otherwise harshly effected Apple's ability to supply the iPad and iPhone and would have only had a minor effect on Samsung's bottom line.

I don't think Samsung needs Apple as much as you'd think. It was an easy paycheck for a long time, yes, but I don't think Samsung is stupid enough to bet their future well-being on Apple. Here's just a few of the markets that Samsung leads in:

  • DRAM (45% market share as of 2011, Hynix closest competitor at 21.5%)
  • TVs (20% market share in 2011, LG closest competitor at 13%)
  • LCD monitors (15% market share in 2011, Dell closest competitor at 12.9%)
  • NAND flash (39.1% market share in 2011, Toshiba closest competitor at 31.4%)
  • Mobile phones (23.8% market share in 2011, Apple closest competitor at 14.6%)

They also have substantial but not industry leading market share in:

  • Lithium-ion batteries (18.7%, lost to Sanyo at 19.4%)
  • Digital Cameras (11.8%, lost to Sony at 17.4%)
  • Smartphone SoCs (20.4%, lost to Qualcomm at 51.5%)

Samsung Electronics is an enormous company, and I think they'll be fine without Apple.

Looks like Verizon's Galaxy S III will be powered by the Snapdragon S4 by Come-back-Shanein Android

[–]CoreDuo08 0 points1 point ago

How is it bullshitting my way out of it when I just explained exactly what I meant to imply? I was referring to the benchmark that I linked in context to cite where I got the number, and that I wasn't just pulling it straight out of my ass. What more do you want? The reason I used that benchmark is because it's the closest thing that resembles the typical workload of an OpenGL ES 2.0 game without being encumbered by the 60fps vsync limit since it's rendered off screen. That isn't to say that every game with scale linearly with the benchmark, it's only supposed to give a general idea of what kind of performance you can expect. It's not too terribly different from running Unigine Heaven or 3DMark 11 on a PC.

Eh, semantics. shrugs

Upvoted anyway. The reason I worded it that way was because I was extrapolating my statement from the image I linked, not necessarily from every real world scenario.

The AT&T Galaxy S III is probably going to be similar to the Verizon one because sans the iPhone, North American carriers won't subsidize flagship smartphones that don't support LTE anymore.

Any game where 3D graphics are being rendered are probably already utilizing OpenGL ES 2.0. There's tens of thousands of them on Google Play right now and even more coming out daily. The vast majority of them target devices that are roughly equivalent to Galaxy Nexus hardware so there's seldom much graphical complexity to them. It won't be this way forever, and I'd rather be ahead of the curve since to me a smartphone is a long term investment much like a gaming PC would be. Smartphones are far too expensive to dump them like a cheap netbook every year, regardless of whether you buy them on contract or not. Since there's rumors of Google working on a Game Center competitor, this market can only grow larger.

Looks like Verizon's Galaxy S III will be powered by the Snapdragon S4 by Come-back-Shanein Android

[–]CoreDuo08 3 points4 points ago*

Ehh, I'd still rather buy the international model off contract simply because of the deficiency in GPU performance associated with the Snapdragon S4. The Adreno 225 is a design that dates back to 2010 with some minor tweaks to incorporate a dual-channel memory controller instead of a single-channel one in Adreno 220, though that isn't to say that the S4's GPU is anything to shake a stick at as it's still somewhat competitive against Tegra 3. But the Mali-400MP in the Galaxy S III is over 80% faster than the Adreno 225 meaning it outperforms not only the HTC One X by a huge margin, but the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 as well and even being within spitting distance of the iPad 3. This will pay dividends with more advanced OpenGL ES 2.0 games as gaming on Android matures, which is why the performance difference isn't immediately obvious to whatever reviewer got a hold of pre-release hardware.

The GTX 690 is a prime example of Nvidia reshaped. by polaris210in gamingpc

[–]CoreDuo08 7 points8 points ago*

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and present an alternative argument from a more cynical point of view:

NVIDIA launched the GTX 690 before the GTX 670 because the former is nothing but binned GK104 chips and since the dual GPU cards sell maybe 1,000 units over their entire lifetime, NVIDIA doesn't have to worry about supply like they do the GTX 680 cards, which have been virtually non-existent over the past couple of months. It's possible that the GK110 chip is a revision that addresses design flaws causing the poor 28nm yields that neither AMD nor Qualcomm are experiencing despite the low initial wafer availability from TSMC associated with any bleeding edge manufacturing processes. It doesn't matter if you have the fastest card on the market if people can't buy them.

So you only have a MicroSD card inserted when you need it. This works especially well with the usage case I described. It's not that significant of a tradeoff compared to not having the option available at all.

[–]CoreDuo08 1 point2 points ago*

While yes, the 32GB version is available internationally, it sort of does away with the idea that I may not want everything on my phone at once. For example, since most smartphones now can decode 1080p video and output to HDMI, I may not want 1080p movies taking up the internal storage on my phone all the time. With external expansion, I could keep movies on MicroSD cards that I keep in my wallet and take out when I need them instead of copying things back and forth between my computer that I might not always have access to. The free cloud storage HTC offers with One X is a nice gesture, but that doesn't have a whole lot of use in the North American carrier market where tiered plans are expensive and unlimited plans very nearly don't exist. Sprint does have unlimited plans but their 3G network is oversold here, there's no WiMax network and LTE coverage is currently very limited. I also might not have a fast enough connection all the time to make cloud storage useful.

[–]CoreDuo08 13 points14 points ago*

MicroSD expansion is one reason why I don't like the One X/S and wish the Evo 4G LTE wasn't exclusive to Sprint.
