Arlington, Texas, just paid $30,000 for this logo. Doesn't seem like it was quite worth it.. by sapproin WTF

Its actually this:

https://message.wsu.edu/Content/Graphics/messageparents/fall2010/wsu.jpg

Its just in the crest, but I admit, the attempt to make the Cougar out of really dodgy "W S U" shaped globs is pretty bad.

Because they didn't pay $50,000 for just the logo... The work is in making the logo an identity throughout the entire campus and it involves weeks upon weeks of work. We're talking everything from making sure departments are coordinated with the brand, that stationary and advertising materials are uniform and that there's a cohesive message and strategy behind it all. One example:

http://www.washington.edu/externalaffairs/uwmarketing/toolkits/docs/bg/UniversityBrandGuidelinesComplete.pdf

And from Oxford

http://www.ox.ac.uk/document.rm?id=1071

The kind of hours that would go into such a "class project" would be wayy to much. Don't forget, what makes this turn into months of work is sitting in meetings and making sure the administration is happy with every single little thing you're putting in there, as well as their marketing department. I doubt they'd let students create the face of the university.

So they didn't pay 30K just for the logo, but rather then entire branding package. Even if it is ugly, quite a bit of work will go into the rest of the marketing stuff beyond just the logo. Why the misleading title?

Maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic here, but maybe it wasn't just for the logo and is what usually costs that much - the entire branding package? The only example I have is a local one, in The Grove they paid a nice amount for their logo too, but its integrated throughout the entire center, from advertising materials to carved on structures so it feels like its a single entity. Maybe they paid to have the entire place done in that weird whimsical theme?

EDIT: Yep, that's pretty much what happened.

More designers need to read the AIGA salary survey...

The idea of a poor starving graphic designer is a bad stereotype.

Ad agency != creative agency. Huge difference, actually. In ad agencies, the design department is just that, a department. In creative agencies, the entire thing is design (though these companies are usually much, much smaller).

This is something I think a lot of designers have trouble with because, generally speaking, we're not as "profit driven" as most professions.

Yeah and its a huge mistake to do that, because designers ARE profit driven (ie, the company wants to get more money by reaching its audience better by paying us to handle that problem). I've always felt like this was always the big elephant in the room that people in design try to ignore, as if we're these pure artists. The only reason we're not just sitting in our rooms making designs for fun is because businesses have decided that design does have a value and does bring in a profit (THANK GOODNESS). That's why we get paid in the first place, not because businesses are charities funding our art exploration lol.

So defending it from that standpoint becomes that much easier. I've told people something as simple as "not putting your navigation bar up there where it usually is WILL lead to less people clicking on your consultation page, and all you need is just ONE PERSON who doesn't do that and goes to someone else to have costed you hundreds of dollars, is your idea really worth that to you?"

Seriously, what is with the Hobo Std bs?! There is literally no reason to use it in the cases I see it being used, yet its like people see their fonts and scroll through dozens of nice ones and go "hmm...avenir...nope, gill sans...nah, futura...no, HOBO STD...YES!" There is literally no reason to do that yet I see it all the time in bad designs. I can even understand an cubicle dweller using Comic Sans and Papyrus because they're the only "fun" fonts you have in a default Microsoft Office setup. But Hobo? Why?!?!

Save for the light blue, those are actually quite beautiful colors. But yeah, not for full-page backgrounds. That's going to be one soaked magazine.

My startup makes software for smart-devices. Does this work or is it too boring/bland? (please note, my clients are corporate cos and not individuals) by kabuliwallahin Design

[–]Conde_Nasty 1 point2 points ago

Concept is a little too obvious and I think its actually dictating your design too much. Never let your design be enslaved to any particular idea (its just a common problem we designers have, we like to go with our idea and dammit we're going to squeeze the shit until it fits into that idea). No offense, I just like it when people show two or three concepts instead of just one, its hard to tell someone "no" instead of "I like that direction a little better."

Also, it doesn't really seem corporate to me. Corporate logos are usually very straight forward, easy to read, but powerful. The "solutions" is just hard to read and looking at it I'm seeing an actually fascinating problem its created: at large sizes its so spaced out that you have to look at each letter individually, yet at small sizes the weight is so thin in comparison to the name that you have to squint your eyes to see it.

Designers of Reddit: My fledgling company needs some branding and identity work done... I'm looking for a Redditor (or two!) to partner with, rather than going the crowdsourced / "contest" / spec route. Any help or suggestions? by Elumakoin Design

[–]Conde_Nasty 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, the big issue with these crowd sites is that they won't see your brand through, they won't work to connect with your client base and won't provide the market research necessary. Especially with your company's direction, you need someone to really think this through and approach it with a comprehensive brand strategy. I'll shoot you a PM.

Try lowering your mouse sensitivity, it will make you slow down a bit and give you more control.

that as far as technology has come

It hasn't come that far. Our phones barely last a day. A major problem with augmentations is powering them. They have to support a significant amount of weight and basically be in constant actuation.

Epic Games Has Seen PS4/Xbox 720 In Specs, They’re Not Powerful Enough by mehgandavidin gamernews

[–]Conde_Nasty 2 points3 points ago

Its raw input. Source listens to the hardware directly and doesn't fuck with it. Even if you are changing its sensitivity, it still doesn't add its own bullshit like some other engines. Worst offender is Fallout 3, near-universal complaints of mouse weight which isn't easily removed. I wish every single game just had a raw/same_as_os check box and you'd never have to mess with a game's input settings again.

Everything like physics,graphics, etc.

Not just that, AI, map size/complexity and usage of new tech (tessellation, fur modelling, etc). The biggest disappointment to me is AI, it hasn't progressed all that much since Quake3Arena's bots. The biggest that I've seen is STALKER's A-Life, where the entire world and monsters could operate without your involvement, but even that series is done for.

What's the proper etiquette when being stood up? by AAKraigusin AskReddit

[–]Conde_Nasty 5 points6 points ago

Often I don't end up buying anything, but it gives me a good chance to show off my sense of humor (pick out some goofy shirts or hats to try on too), gives us something specific to start conversations with (fashion in this case),

Ouch. Different strokes for different folks, because this seems dead-awkward to me. I would not feel comfortable trying to pull that off, at all. I'm not a particularly suave dude but in a full-on dinner thing I can be 3/5s suave. On a "supermarket date"? I'd probably just embarrass myself. Don't know how you do it.

Some Frostbite games will require a 64-bit OS in 2013 - DICE by mehgandavidin Games

[–]Conde_Nasty 1 point2 points ago

My estimate is that the average is somewhere between 2 and 4GB, but nowhere near 8 or even 16GB, even for gamers

This is weird to me too. Seeing Microcenter/Fry's deals and Newegg deals, it seems far easier to get 8gb of RAM than it is to buy a single stick.
