TROPHY CASE

New Banksy "Bush" London by romromromin Graffiti

[–]Ciceros_Assassin 0 points1 point ago

This exact conversation happens more often in this /r/ than this /r/ gets new posts. The sidebar says /r/graffiti is for

graffiti artwork, stencil, sticker art, wheatpasting and street poster art, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, and street installations.

...which is a much more inclusive list than people making your argument seem to approve of. Not to mention that most literary definitions of "graffiti" include drawings, not just taggers' street names (source: Dictionary.com). Or the fact that outside of a tiny circle of hardcore artists, nearly the entire English-speaking world would call this and almost everything else submitted here "graffiti". Or the fact that plenty of subscribers here obviously approve of a /r/ that includes more than just tags and pieces. Or the fact that plenty of tags and pieces get lots of attention here despite all that. And given that the last one is the case, it's hard to believe that anyone is actually being injured by posts like these rather than just being snobby.

Seriously. Can we please get a mod text-post to clear up what the guidelines are so we don't have to have "this isn't graffiti" as the top post on every fucking thread?

Technician. Logician. Mathematician. Statistician. Rhetorician. Musician. Electrician. Economician - wait, what? by Ciceros_Assassinin wordplay

[–]Ciceros_Assassin[S] 1 point2 points ago

The nouns relating to "mathematic", "electric", and "economic" are "mathematics", "electricity", and "economy".

Thanks for the great reply! But I think your argument falters a bit here:

Since the -ian suffix attaches to denote someone's proficiency in a field, it's appropriate to examine not the root noun, but rather the associated noun related to the study of that root noun: "technic(que)", "logic", "rhetoric", and "music" in the first group (your hard-[k] rule), but "statistics", "mathematics", (arguably) "electrics", and "economics" in a second group, all of which also get -ian as a suffix, except for "economics" - hence, no "economician". I think the inconsistency has more to do with the -nomy suffix, e.g. "agronomy" (agronomist), "gastronomy" (gastronomist), "economy" (economist), and "astronomy" (astronomist - wait, what?)

[–]Ciceros_Assassin 3 points4 points ago

Latin languages put almost all their modifiers after the noun, a construction that you're right to say sounds clunky most of the time in English. Your translation, if "translation" is understood as accurately transmitting meaning between two languages with different rules of construction, is much better at conveying the imperative of the poster to an anglophone audience.

*I just noticed OP misread your headline, and wasn't merely being pedantic. Still, I think your approach is better.

[Request] Anyone who eats Marie Callender, Chef Boyardee, Healthy Choice, Banquet, Orville Redenbacher, Peter Pan, Hunt's, Snack Pack, and Manwich: Could you send me (or just input them yourself) your 8-digit code on the packaging? by eissirkin Favors

[–]Ciceros_Assassin 1 point2 points ago

I have seven Banquet pot pies I bought for quick meals for finals week, but each of them has exactly the same code (26624862). The donation is supposedly "for every code entered", but doesn't specify whether they're talking about unique codes, or whether I should enter this one seven times (which, given that it's a race between participating food banks to get the most codes entered in their zip code, wouldn't make a lick of sense since anyone could easily just enter the same code as many times as they wanted to).

On a different note, there's no way I'm going to race to turn off the autoplayed "Hope" by Jewel seven times. Sorry, kids.

I don't understand your aggression. I pointed out that there are community guidelines that have served to protect the quality of discussions on this site. Your argument seems to be that you don't care about that at all, that they don't apply to you, and that I'm somehow the one in the wrong for reminding you of them. Aren't you just confirming my criticism with this kind of reply?

It isn't a matter of karma - I couldn't care less what score you got. Your comment is still needless clutter, against basic reddiquette, and symptomatic of the constant decline of this /r/ and the site in general. Forgive me for thinking someone might care about what makes this site better for discussion than others - or at least, what used to.

There's actually an up-arrow button next to his comment for expressing that opinion. It's helpful, because it expresses your agreement without cluttering up the thread with useless comments. Try it out sometime!

What happened to your other post was an aberrant overreaction, and if anyone should feel bad about it, it isn't you. It seems like a perfectly polite inquiry to me.

If you Google “ICELAND FORGIVES ENTIRE POPULATION OF MORTGAGE DEBT” you will get ‘About 359,000 Results’. Not one of them is a Media Outlet in the US. Not one single Major or Minor news outlet in America has mentioned a single word about this story. by sullen_ole_geezerin worldpolitics

Today I noticed this /r/ doesn't have a 'report' button for bullshit submissions like this. I don't know if that says things about the community, or just the mods, or what.

President Obama Hits 51% Approval by octoman8in obama

[–]Ciceros_Assassin 1 point2 points ago

Weighing the good with the bad and finding it acceptable; recognition that Presidents aren't kings; recognition that no candidate is able to accomplish every single campaign promise; hopes for a more progressive second term without the specter of reelection hanging over him; recognition that a number of present evils originate in the legislature and would likely pass with or without the President's seal of approval; recognition that he's actually accomplished many positive things given the economic and political climate; recognition that he'll be more receptive to calls for change than alternatives; lack of any kind of better alternative whatsoever. Apply whichever ones you like.

I've said it before in this /r/, but numbers like this worry me so far out from the general election; they have the effect of depressing supporter turnout and galvanizing the opposition. The only way to make your prediction come true is to work hard at getting out the vote.
