Way to think ahead maestro by Ehdeebooin funny

You know, I've seen the .gif reposted so many times, it never occurred to me that this thing was actual music instead of someone just playing around with note-setting software.

That is utterly insane.

This is not Bespoke. Bespoke is all about the iterative process between tailor and customer.

There are just well made custom shoes.

Nurses (yes, nurses) lead charge for Wall Street 'sin' tax: They propose to "Impose a tax of 50 cents on every $100 of trades of stocks, bonds, dividends and other financial transactions, which are not currently taxed." This would generate up to $350 billion a year. by droivodin politics

Here's a 5 year chart for the S&P. We're about 14% off of the high and about 8% off of the "recession". Note this is after the worst quarter in the S&P since the "recession" began.

If you reinvest dividends, you should be pretty much back to par.

If you were a normal 401K investor and were buying through the dip, you should be a good bit ahead.

The only people who lost a good chunk of their 401K's due to the recession are those that paniced and moved into fixed income products at the bottom, then moved back into equities when the worst was over and missed the huge bond rally*. This really isn't that many people.

More like everyone tries all the different flavors of NoSQL, winding through different paths, and somehow end up where the open source NoSQL movement began, i.e. Hadoop/HBase. Cloudera is such a huge success for a reason.

Mortgages as we know it don't really exist in Europe. In most places, you are responsible for the loan regardless of what happens. It's not like in the United States where the house essentially is collateral -- rearguards of what happens you are responsible for the loan, you can't simply stop paying, let the bank take the house, and get out of it with mainly a ruined credit history as your scars.

Think of it like an Auto loan in the United States. They might take your car and sell it, but the money is simply applied to back payments and principal. You are still on the hook for the remainder of the loan.

$1M Margin at 2% for $100K -- When does it make sense to take it? by Chuuin personalfinance

[–]Chuu[S] 0 points1 point ago

I never dug deep into the details so I am not sure. These accounts were being advertised in places that people in the finance industry would see them (CNBC ~10am, Futures Traders Magazine, Bloomberg Stations, etc.) however they were directly targeted at individual traders.

I wish I knew more of the specifics.

$1M Margin at 2% for $100K -- When does it make sense to take it? by Chuuin personalfinance

[–]Chuu[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the reply. IB is in fact the brokerage that is advertising this. I did not realize that margin was so cheap at the $1M+ level.

It's too bad they don't have a "mini" version at the same leverage/rate. I did some back-of-the-envelope math with some simple risk models and investments, and I could see risking $1K or $10K in a margin account at 2% /w 10x leverage, but with $100K on the line I don't know how I'd sleep at night.

I think 100 years is a lot shorter time span than people realize. The Model T is over 100 years old at this point. So are freight trains. We've radically improved their operation but they're fundamentally still the same as they were a century ago.

I loved Ender's Game and the Homecoming series as a child, but it might be interesting to go back and read them as an adult. These books are told from an incredibly authoritarian perspective of the world, whose main characters end up leading as Fascists (albeit of the compassionate dictator variety). Their point of view on race is also very similar to the era of colonization -- the superior western European tribe is simply bringing civilization to the world.

Think about how you felt about the trial at the end of the first book, to determine what exactly the punishment should be for HUGE SPOILER. Just imagine how differently that scene would have been written by various authors from various perspectives. The POV that OSC is getting us to sympathize isn't even "the ends justify the means" since the ends have already come to fruition. It's something a lot more ruthless.

If you're wondering why you're getting down-voted so hard this type of game is called the "Ultimatum Game" and is one of the most famous in economics and sociology -- the reason being is that people actively act against what on the surface appears to be their own best interests with great regularity if the split isn't fair.

By asking for a citation you're just showing that you're completely ignorant of the work done in those two fields.

Hail The King of Westeros, Lord of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men! by pgofin gameofthrones

[–]Chuu 2 points3 points ago

I don't know who down-voted you. There are lessons to be learned from how Steven King handled "The Dark Tower" and Robert Jordan handled "The Wheel of Time" when the respective authors felt like they wouldn't live to see the end of their series. Tolkien also falls into this category in some ways, since the scope of his project was larger than could fit into a lifetime; and he never got to writing what he though would be greatest story in the legendarium (Beren & Luthien).

At the rate the story is progressing, it's more likely than not that Martin will die before he finishes the series. Do we know what is going to happen if he has a massive heart attack 6 months from now? Is he content with letting his story die with him?

I have experience with a company that hires DeVry grads for entry-level IT work. First, they're not hired unseen, they need to pass an interview and show skills like everyone else. They're generally underpaid in exchange for having a respected company's name on their resume, and some got pretty brutal hours (think 7pm-7am).

The good ones generally stay for 2-3 years and move on to much better positions. One of them is currently the head of IT Support for a trading firm in Chicago (which in an industry that needs 24-5 uptime is not taken lightly) the other is on their way to becoming a high paid SAN Engineer.

Don't expect a good gig right out of school though. And don't expect to get a job without demonstrating you're useful.

All that being said, I personally think DeVry is straddling the border between scam and legitimate. What did everyone I know from DeVry who got a job had in common? They were experimenting and passionate with computers before they started the program. In other words, what DeVry gave them was enough legitimacy to get past HR's gatekeepers. They probably could have done the same jobs right out of high school.

Oh god. I didn't have any trouble with this game at all. Also didn't discover until ridiculously late in the game how overpowered Noa's charm attack was.

Until I made a huge mistake. I set up my save games so I was stuck in the Nivora Ravine without a way to get out and level. So I had to beat the Delilas family with my party as it was.

Spent three whole weeks trying to beat them, and couldn't. So frustratingly close to the end of the game, and just completely blocked.

Never went back to try to beat it. It's so frustrating knowing that it's probably a couple hours to the end of the game from that point.

The recent CSIRO patent case shows exactly how patents can jump out of you from nowhere. Pretty much every single wi-fi device manufacturer is going to be cutting them a check because proving tacit knowledge in a court to a jury is a huge gamble at best, and impossible at worst.

And the CSIRO case is just the beginning . . .

I don't know you if you can put Costco in the same category. Since I started shopping there, every time I need to go to Target I can't believe how much more expensive they are.

The same people who are willing to pay for Costco memberships really aren't the same as those who rely on Walmart/Target/BestBuy/etc.

There are two more videos on his site that are a lot less about him and a lot more about how he makes Pizza and his store. They're also from when he was in NYC before he moved to SanFran.

link : http://www.unapizza.com/sf/naturally_risen.html

Of note, those are $20 pizzas. And the reviews around the web are very mixed. I also noticed there is no description anywhere about the work that goes into the sauce.

I don't doubt his passion, but I have a gut feeling that these might not be as good as advertised . . . but the next time I'm in SF I might try it.

If anyone in this subreddit is in the Bay Area I'd love to hear their opinion.
