"To get rid of heat, you can point thermal radiators at the dark sky, and to warm up you can point at the Sun or Earth." NASA's Cosmicopia

What kind of surface area are we looking at? If water were in large supply, could it be used as a coolant? Now I'm starting to imagine something maybe cooler than the Enterprise...huge solar arrays with built in radiators? Oh, and I heard that a meter of water would protect a person from most solar radiation.

said it'd need big radiators for the waste heat....I can see two of 'em right there.

I'm pretty sure some people might get used to the rapid rotations, but I could do without the glass. Cameras and monitors could show what is outside without the spin, or a slower one.

Gotta agree, when was the last time something decent happened with/to you in the past decade? There are neighborhoods that'll give you a new perspective...gotta passport? Oh, and no, I don't want it...I've got a bunch.

Great artwork! How about some other colors? Or is coffee drawing the new thing now?

Why humans are better than robots at exploring space.a by astroelliein Astronomy

[–]China_Baby 1 point2 points ago

so we are better machines...at the moment, better at drilling?. We still require more energy and power to transport when they can practically have cellphone sized satellites now. The only purpose of getting people off of Earth is overpopulation and survival of the species. Exploration is great for disposable probes, whereas people might like to live. We've seen the artificial biospheres made crash on Earth so I'd say we've got to prove that we won't just die from lack of o2...send up the 'bots first and have them set up shop.

Should have been a big party for the guy/girl! I don't think it would have been hard to script celebrations in all the major cities/towns for a couple of days. I can just imagine streamers, fireworks, and lots of drunk people!

North Korea raises alert for live-fire drill | Reuters by RoWagnerin worldnews

[–]China_Baby 2 points3 points ago

Been going on a long time...decades, really. Will things reach a boiling point? Probably not, they want the aid South Korea provides. Been around for regular bomb-raid alerts in Seoul...people just go about their business. Could something terrible happen? Yes, but North Korea is not so dumb as to recognize they'd get their asses kicked. They want to keep this going as long as possible. They could make a mess of things, but in the long run there would have to be Chinese support against North Korea. China likes the buffer zone and doesn't like the idea that the U.S. might be on the border if Korea was united.

Obama worse than Bush on medical marijuana, says Rolling Stone by icaasoin politics

[–]China_Baby 3 points4 points ago

My thing is that he really convinced people he would do something and didn't. People are used to bullshit politicians, but Obama seemed like he would roll up his sleeves and unplug the toilet. He is a "soft" president and a disappointment; an empty chair would have done more.

I'm saying this because I really liked him and believed in him. I know one person can't move mountains but he could have taken a damn stand and owned his four years.

Windows 8 App Store Games Announced, Includes XBLA Games by malnourishin Games

[–]China_Baby 0 points1 point ago

So disappointing! With quad-core tablets coming out, the idea of being able to play an actual PC game would have been awesome. Without that, what are we going to see? Angry birds?

I've heard mention of power consumption issues and whatnot, but shouldn't that be left up to the user? If I can plug it in somewhere and play my regular pc games that would sell...not a perfect solution, but better than having some empty slate. Heck, even an iPad battery won't last that long if you are constantly playing 3d games on it.

I thought I'd be getting a PC tablet, not a "looks-like-a-pc" tablet but doesn't actually do as much.

Windows 8 should be the same thing (maybe a throttling option for battery life) on any platform or it is just going to be for a niche market instead of everyone.

Eh, "normal" isn't actually a person anyway...I usually just label myself as crazy and let people figure out who I am. Humans are far too dynamic to be labeled...oops, I labeled them!
