Zoomable map of NYC color coded to show every building's energy usage by gtjin environment

[–]Causemos 0 points1 point ago

Building floor area is already reported (zoom down to a single building). However these numbers mean more when you know 100 people live there vs. 10 people.

How many people work or live in these buildings? Somewhat useless without that.

Reddit, What is the best piece of financial advice you can offer to someone in their early 20's? by longfellow110in AskReddit

Save up for things BEFORE you buy them. Borrowing money for something fun is just stealing fun from your future self. Not only will you pay more for it, but you'll have to wait longer for the next thing. Your future self will thank you.

The blades (N1) would have been running at 70% of 5175 RPM, which is 3622 RPM, or over 60 revolutions per second. Maybe someone can calculate the speed at the tips of the 61 inch diameter blades, but not much is going to hold up to that.

Other information gathered here

edit: fat fingered the 70% value (had 2622) but the 60 revs per second was correct

Well said. I've met a lot of people with very little who are very happy and on the other side, those with everything who are not.

It's easy to fall into the endless cycle of "I'm not going to be happy unless <xyz>". Before you know it you're never happy because there is always something else. Having goals is good, but defining your existence by them is just asking for misery.

SpareOne cellphone can live 15 years on a single AA battery by kamalo9in gadgets

[–]Causemos 26 points27 points ago

I'm not sure why this is "absolutely mind-boggling". Any device with a hard switch disconnect from the battery can claim the same thing.

Of course there will be some monthly fee involved. The phone companies won't let them make a useful device without fees.

How feasible would it be to have a third-party audit the government? by carleverettin AskReddit

[–]Causemos 0 points1 point ago

The right/wrong are from your words, not mine.

Observing and reporting are, by definition, biased. Any basic statistics class will tell you that. You can't include every detail so someone has to decide how and what to present.

What happens if these very intelligent people don't agree with your view of what's right/wrong? Who screens them? Even if we vote on them, how would it be any different than an election? etc etc etc

A book like Ender's Game. by DatLouisin books

[–]Causemos 0 points1 point ago

The same feel is a difficult thing to pin down, but here are some you may enjoy.

The Belgariad Series by David Eddings (Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit, Castle of Wizardry, Enchanters' End Game)

The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan (The Magicians' Guild, The Novice, The High Lord)

Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson (The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, The Hero of Ages)

The Second Sons Trilogy by Jennifer Fallon (Lion of Senet, Eye of the Labyrinth, Lord of the Shadows)

While it's hard for the other Ender books to stand up to the first one, they are still a good read if you wish to spend more time in that world.

Was anyone else no longer able to watch a Tom Cruise movies after learning about his faith in the ridiculousness of Scientology? by Absolutekindin entertainment

Battlefield Earth is actually pretty good (the book, not the movie), though it has been years since I've read it (didn't know who LRH was at the time). Need to read it again one of these years to see how it has held up.

[–]Causemos 0 points1 point ago

If you get to know anyone well enough, they probably believe many things you'd consider ridiculous. That's basically life. Many wars a started over such things.

While I consider Scientology ridiculous also. Tom Cruise's choice of scripts and his acting (cough) ability are more of a turn off to me.

Oddly the blu-ray version is significantly cheaper than the DVD right now (and includes all the extras on DVD, only the movies are on blu-ray). $50 vs. $91

I agree with Stall0ne that the extras are great!

If you had to choose, Nook Color or Kindle Fire? by bugdin gadgets

Well at home it's easy to stream from a home computer (no local storage needed). So long as you had WiFi you could set something up to stream outside your home (I have successfully done FTP streaming over WiFi on my phone).
