What are some interesting facts about Uranus? by MegaPower124in askscience

[–]CG10277 1 point2 points ago

  • A day on Uranus is equal to a little more than 17 hours on Earth.

  • A year on Uranus is equal to 84.01 Earth Years.

  • Uranus is the third largest planet in the Solar System.

  • The atmosphere of Uranus is composed of hydrogen, helium, and methane. The methane in the atmosphere absorbs red light, giving the planet a blue-green color.

Why do we sweat when we are nervous? by Jonny23261in askscience

[–]CG10277 2 points3 points ago

It is common for people to experience sweating during anxiety. This can happen when you are preparing to deliver a speech or during a job interview. Sweating is a perfectly natural reaction to the situation that causes distress.

In our body there are actually two different sets of nerves that send signals to sweat glands. The sympathetic nerves carry neurotransmitters that stimulate the production of sweat. Parasympathetic nerves carry different neurotransmitters that signal the glands to cease and desist in the production of sweat. There could be many situations that can trigger the activity of the sympathetic nerves. For example, exercise, warm climate, high humidity, and even spicy foods can cause the nerves to trigger signals to the sweat gland to begin producing sweat .This is done to maintain the body to what is perceived as a normal or resting state. Coming to your specific question, when you are nervous, the sympathetic nerves are are triggered and send signals to sweat gland. This is called fight or flight response.

How does a 3D printer work? by MikeyR16in askscience

[–]CG10277 7 points8 points ago

3D printing works by building up an object layer by layer. There are several 3D printing technologies and they are are all quite different.

  • Selective laser sintering (SLS) technique uses a high-powered laser to fuse particles of plastic, metal, ceramic, or glass. At the end of the job, the remaining material is recycled.

  • Another one is fused deposition modeling (FDM), in this technique ABS plastic or another thermoplastic is melted and deposited through a heated extrusion nozzle.

  • Multi-jet modeling (among the fastest) is an inkjet-like 3D printing system that sprays a colored, glue-like binder onto successive layers of powder where the object is to be formed. This method supports color printing.

The first 3D printers to come to market, made in the mid-1990s by Stratasys with help from IBM, used FDM, as do many personal printers.

Is Dog Speak a Universal Language? by RandyMachoManSavagein askscience

[–]CG10277 2 points3 points ago

Dogs communicate through a combination of body language, facial expression and vocalizations. There are no language barriers.

Regardless of their country of origin, dogs speak a universal language.

A Mexican Chihuahua has no problem communicating with a Portuguese water dog or a Chinese Shar-pei. They all speak "dog." Communication can be subtle - a glance, tensing of muscles, a lick of the lips, a slight postural shift - or obvious - rolling over in submission, a play "bow," or loud barking.

A couple questions about cancer. by tallbus1in askscience

[–]CG10277 1 point2 points ago

Actually cancer isn’t a disease; it is a set of diseases. And these diseases have a variety of factors such as diet, lifestyle, heredity, environment etc. There are cancers caused by viruses, by bacteria, by radiation, by insecticides, by smoking, by drinking, and by fatty foods. Every organ in your body can develop cancer, and cancer from one organ can trigger the development of cancer in another. Therefore nobody is cured of cancer, they merely go into remission. If they are lucky, then the remission lasts until the patient dies of something else. Currently most cancer treatments have extended the lives of cancer patients and have improved the quality of their lives. But cure it?

Given all the advancements in genomics field and better understanding of cancer genetics (NCI is developing a cancer genome atlas) it would be easier to fight against it.

Do single-celled organisms experience aging? by monkeychessin askscience

[–]CG10277 2 points3 points ago

It is generally believed that the first organisms did not age, and that aging thus evolved at some point in the history of life. When and why this transition occurred is a fundamental question in evolutionary biology. Recent reports of aging in bacteria suggest that aging predates the emergence of eukaryotes and originated in simple unicellular organisms. So yes, bacetria do age, but the mechanism is not well understood.

How do cells and genes "know" how to form the head, hands, etc.? by StacyPastryin askscience

[–]CG10277 0 points1 point ago

“General purpose” control genes are important elements in building complicated organisms like flies. Some “control” genes are common to many organisms (they are homologous—inherited from our common ancestor). For example, Hox genes help lay out the basic body forms of many animals, including humans, flies, and worms. They set up the head-to-tail organization. You can think of them as directing instructions as an embryo develops: “Put the head here! Legs go over there!”

They are general purpose in the sense that they are similar in many organisms; it doesn’t matter if it’s a mouse’s head or a fly’s head that is being built, the same gene directs the process. Small changes in such powerful regulatory genes, or changes in the genes turned on by them, could represent a major source of evolutionary change.

How can a glass bottle of sparkling water spontaneously explode? by MrleClochardin askscience

[–]CG10277 1 point2 points ago

There are two main phenomenas that can make glass break without moving it:

Resonance – if you use the right frequency of sound (say with tuning fork or an electronic device that outputs a sound with high frequency) and the frequency matches the natural frequency of the bonds of the glass atom lattice, then you can make the glass break without touching it because you are making the atoms move so much that they break their lattice structure that forms the glass.

Temperature – like anything, glass expands and contracts with temperature. Think about how mercury in a thermometer rises or grows as the temperature is increased. This type of behavior is exhibited by everything, including glass. When you take glass and you heat it up to high temps, such as a light bulb, and then you touch it to something very cool like an ice cube – the glass will break – usually violently, because the part of the glass that you touch with the ice cube wants to contract while the rest of the hot glass is expanding.
