Study: iOS Apps Crashes More Frequently Than Android Apps by essohbeein Android

[–]CC440 7 points8 points ago

The great irony of this is reading the article in Reddit is Fun which crashes literally every single time I post a comment. The dev probably thinks he's fixed the problem because now it hangs on "posting reply" for 20+ minutes before throwing up the error message giving me a chance to report it. I usually just force close it because it isn't worth it to wait to report every time.

TIL that in 2004, a white, African-born Omaha student was expelled for seeking his school's "Distinguished African-American Student” award by PotatoMusicBingein todayilearned

[–]CC440 0 points1 point ago

They way I figure it is that we refer to blacks because their race is distinctly African in origin. Even if their lineage dates back to a Carribean island since the 16th century they are still "African" because that's where their race came from.

If you're a white South African you are Cape Dutch and thus European by ancestry, yes your lineage goes back centuries in Africa but your race is European.

It's stupid to offer scholarships supposedly based on nationality when they actually meant race. Even then it's stupid to have race specific scholarships.

Does using a higher grade gasoline give me better gas mileage? by redfukitin askscience

[–]CC440 0 points1 point ago*

Except in an engine designed to breath hard with high compression that power increase is all in the upper range of the powerband.

The fuel mapping and timing at cruising speed will remain pretty much the same. There will be a tiny benefit for sure but I said there will be a noticeable difference in power. You can feel more snappy engine response even if there's only a 2.5% difference in power. You won't feel a 2.5% difference in fuel economy since that adds up to .5 mpg on average, well within the usual tank to tank variation for most drivers. That's also if the efficiency gains are linear over the whole rev range which they aren't.

Now, since the compression ratio in your engine is fixed, and the manufacturer recommends 87, you gain absolutely nothing by running higher octane (In fact, you lose a bit, because the energy content per unit of volume of 91 gas is slightly lower than 87 gas!).

Not necessarily true, there is a maximum possible compression ratio but the ignition is always timed before top dead center. On some cars the engine control unit has programming (a fuel map) that can recognize higher octane fuel and bump the timing up a few degrees. This will only have a noticeable effect on power, not mileage, and only a rare handful of cars have this feature but there can be a difference.

An example of this would be the new Ford 5.0 motor. It achieves 402hp/377tq on 87 octane, 412hp/390tq. This isn't due to a failsafe mode like on most cars either, it's designed to run equally well in both modes, just down a few points of compression on regular.

What will slay your mileage is running 87 in a car that needs 91. Anything turbocharged that requires 91 will start spitting charcoal briquets out the exhaust once it goes into limp-home mode. I had a friend who would constantly put 87 in his WRX to save to $0.20 cents and it halved his fuel mileage, he didn't care about that since "he saved money at the pump".

We also really do need a training table for the athletes.

This bullet weighs significantly more with only a slightly slower muzzle velocity and also has a far more aerodynamic shape as well.

During a disaster there isn't a sudden population increase around the tower, they can handle hundreds of simultaneous pings if not more. The problem during large events is that suddenly you have tens of thousands of connections being made at any one time on a single cell. The population variance is what creates the overload, you don't need a cell capable of handling 200,000 people when they are only there for 7 days of the year. That's why they bring in the mobile trucks now and every one I've seen only provides 2G service.

The better theoretical concept is to just have capacitors (or some other dense form of temporary energy storage) that provide power under acceleration. Acceleration is the least efficient condition for the engine but a gas engine is more efficient than an electric one when you're going at a fairly steady pace. The battery weight and powertrain drag necessary to make the electric motor useful when cruising outweighs the benefits of taking load off the engine. That's also the thinking behind Honda's approach to hybrids, small motors to assist the engine under acceleration then focus on light weight and efficient aero to get the highway efficiency gains.

The reason you don't see this approach is because it's too difficult to modulate the throttle response. There have been a lot of attempts at hydraulic acceleration assist for trucks but the throttle control has kept them in the prototype space for the most part.

Some Colleges might want to start looking abroad, Team World is Currently beating Team USA in U-19 football 21 - 9 [xpost r/sports] by hulk_kroganin CFB

Except hardly any of those US players are headed to FBS schools and even fewer are headed to AQ programs.

I don't doubt an all world team wouldn't be able to compete with a college all star one, I'm just sayijg our current team is pretty much comparable to a high level high school roster.

It's your money on the replacement too. The battery likely won't wear out in the warranty period and Honda probably assumed the litigation risks of batteries dying soon (1-2 years) after the warranties expire was a bigger worry.

All other hybrids already have that type of programming, the standard Prius never lets the charge go below ~50% or above 75% to maintain the elasticity and lifespan of the battery. The plug in version has a wider window but in general you don't want a li-ion battery using the full capacity window on a regular basis. Just like a laptop, keeping it near 100% charge is actually the fastest way to kill the cells which is why it's recommended you remove the battery if all you do is keep it on the charger all day.

Syracuse football used to be huge and I guarantee there are more Orange fans than Knicks fans when it comes to basketball. The problem is that the two contenders for northeastern fanbases, Uconn and Cuse, have been invisible on the national stage forever.

People in the northeast have no problem following college sports looking at the interest in basketball, the problem is that everyone hates BC, Syracuse forgot they had a football team, and the state schools didn't have major football programs until this decade. If Uconn moved to the ACC and shelled out for a respectable head coach they'd have a following comparable to a Michigan State or VT.

[–]CC440 1 point2 points ago

There's a huge following for basketball though and Uconn probably has enough spread out support that they would become a major program if they could string together multiple good seasons. That's why BC voted them down for joining the ACC, it would be a catalyst that would kill their only recruiting advantage.

TIL: A hairdresser created a plastic that can withstand temperatures hot enough to melt diamond. by snoobs89in todayilearned

[–]CC440 8 points9 points ago

This comes up every few months.

It can withstand flash temperatures that high but nothing more sustained than a few thousandths of a second unless this guy somehow broke physics. What I mean by that is that the types of bonds found in any type of plastic simply cannot withstand that kind of energy, in fact no known material can.

Also it has to be fairly brittle based on the few demonstration videos of it where they coat an egg with it, torch it, then remove it in under a minute. It's not a hoax but it isn't a miracle material either, the creator was just very good at marketing it and had total message control over what he could claim about it.

That unlimited plan is still more than a basic plan and that's even more than a paygo phone. I'm not saying normal users would overload the system but marketing spammers would become a problem. This actually was a concern 7-8 years ago before providers started forcing people into texting bundles.

TIL text messages cost you, in some cases, over 5000% more than what they cost your provider to send. by WholeWideWorldin todayilearned

[–]CC440 3 points4 points ago

There needs to be a cost associated with sending a text though as you could easily flood those channels. Even the best hardware can only handle a few hundred phones pinging it at any one time. If it was free or incredibly cheap to text there would be too much spam to provide adequate service to everyone.

A good example of what it would be like with free texting is the effects seen when you get large crowds in crappy venues that haven't added in extra hardware to deal with the overflow. Texts don't come in and don't go out. Lately providers have been outfitting popular stadiums and other venues with localized networks and I've seen the disaster recovery mobile towers at a few college football games this year.

All those competitors have a significant enough market share to count and Nokia built OVI on a shoestring budget that any good startup could match. Good map software isn't cheap to develop and there was never a time where people were developing anything comparable to modern map software as homebrew ventures.

If you want advanced products you're going to have high barriers to entry. They aren't so high that there aren't a wide variety of competitors though.

You sure it isn't soldered in? I've never come across a laptop where the socket was actually a user replaceable socket. Even if it is the same slot you should check to see if that same CPU was ever offered on that exact model, otherwise you could nuke the motherboard from the increased power draw.
