Greatest hockey movie ever. Where are the Slap Shot fans? by With_Panachein videos

[–]Bubba__ 0 points1 point ago

If I was worried about the downvotes, I wouldn't have commented. Suspension of disbelief is fine but when you want to characterize a movie as the best or even good, should it not accurately portray what is being chronicled? Ben Kingsley in Ghandi, Denzel Washington in Malcolm X, Jamie Fox in Ray are all examples of what is possible. Jamie Fox played the music in Ray and was fabulous. I should expect less from a movie that should be considered the best of a (sub)genre?

The context of when it originally was shown is lost 35 years later. Is Star Wars the same experience for someone who saw it in '77 that it is now? The hockey part of this Hockey Movie is absurd and for me, Paul Newman on skates adequately shows that. For instance, I'm a programmer and watching Hackers or CSI or whatever, while possibly, enjoyable, are ridiculous commentaries on coding.

You're casting the role of Valeri Kharlamov and you select someone who played one year at Fitchburg State College. They got away with Jim Craig because of the mask but only barely. Compare it to the actual footage and you be the judge.

You can make a decent athlete/actor look like a football player or baseball or often, even basketball but the skills required to look like a credible hockey player require a decade to acquire. It just never looks remotely realistic.

This occurred 33 years ago at a time when you only left the ice if they carried you off, unconscious. And even then, only long enough to close the wound. We are meant to believe that an Olympic Athlete (hockey player) had to be coerced to continue because of a bruise? I have seen the documentary and if you'll remember the Russians were played by actual players. Kurt Russel told a story about how they would play pick-up between takes and the ACTORS never lost to junior, college and ex-pros. Watch it again and take a look at the face of Mike Eruzione when he tells this anecdote.

I'll admit watching a 60 yo Eric Nesterenko slap the shit out of Rob Low was enjoyable.

It's a 3 day weekend in July with Monday off. Half the team is out of town at the cottage/beach etc in some cases hundreds of kilometres away. Wives, fiancees, SO's have been planning it for months. Pull into the parking lot for practice Sunday night and not a single car is missing. They all drive 3,4 or 5 hours for an hour and a half of ice, a couple beers and one more shift.

It was a good story but it most assuredly was not an awesome hockey movie.

"Put your gear on!"

"I want you to be a hockey player!"

"I am a hockey player!"

...

Please

Slap Shot was hilarious and I will regret this but it has to be said. There has never been a hockey movie that comes remotely close to good.

EDIT: Suicide by ageism. Did anyone else see it when it was originally in theatres?

The inevitability of it seems obvious but the manner in which they (CAT) attempt to appear as if it isn't is disingenuous at best and sociopathic at worst.

If it was doing Maths I would pick Erdos but I don't think I could keep up with the amphetamine addiction.

they bury me someplace I don't want to be,

away from the swollen city-breeze, garbage-bag trees,

whispers of disease amd the acts of enormity

and lower me slowly, sadly and properly
