Ah, cool, yeah. I'll have to check him out.

I would assume that by "Robert Bell" you don't mean Rob Bell, formerly of Mars Hill in Grand Rapids.

Agnostic theist is how I self-identify. It's mostly that I choose to live as though there is a God. I choose to live, albeit completely imperfectly, the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels. But at the same time, it's not like there's much empirical evidence for the existence of God. I can't see that changing at all. So how can I or anyone say conclusively that God exists?

And so truly, as a step of faith, I'm trusting in something I can't know.

At any rate, best of luck with the remainder of your studies at Liberty. It's definitely an interesting place. I'm glad they've stopped calling me. :)

Not that everyone there is perfect, but ever spend any time on r/Christianity? Mostly pretty decent people over there... even the ones I disagree with. The "regular" atheists in the sub are usually pretty fantastic too.

Kind of an ass? If he and Sarah Jessica Parker reproduced, she would, indeed, birth a mule.

Would you consider yourself an agnostic theist?

My girlfriend and I of two years just basically had sex. We are both Christian. She is blaming herself. What do I do? by TheAndrewSpencein Christianity

[–]BraveSaintStuart 5 points6 points ago

There are likely to be hundreds of "Christian" perspectives on this, and none of that really matters. I mean, truly, you and your girlfriend are the ones who are living through this and so it's your responsibility as a couple to come to terms with the issue. I'm not willing to say that God has condemned either of you.

What I will say is that sex is a responsibility. It's not simply an instinct acted out. Sex has emotional, physical and spiritual repercussions. What you need to try to understand is how your girlfriend is feeling right now. First of all, in sex without marriage, there's little security in the relationship, and though it's not always the case, this is something that women tend to desire. Beyond that, there can be this feeling on her part that she has lost some worth.

It's important, if you want to ease her fears, that you reassure the relationship, and that you reassure her worth. Continually.

The other thing is that you "somehow keep ending up in these situations", and so there's a likelihood that you'll end up in a similar situation again. As others have said, above all, practice safe sex. If you feel (if SHE feels) that you want to wait, you need to be responsible for that and not put any sort of pressure on her. When she waivers, you stop. End of story. But if there's even the possibility that you might be in a situation at any given point during your time together where you two might be alone enough to get down... get a condom.

The physical repercussions of sex increase when pregnancy or STDs are introduced.

Pray for me /r/Christianity, I'm getting married today! by someone_somethingin Christianity

Enjoy it! Go have some awesome sex, while you're at it.

Best advice I can give is to always pursue your wife. I'm not always good at it, and I can sometimes take her for granted. But if I'm patient and kind and understanding, and continually make her feel like I want her, she's gonna be a happy girl.

Are you scared of dying? The thought of no heaven or hell scares me more than anything by cheerileeleein Christianity

[–]BraveSaintStuart 0 points1 point ago

I'm kind of late to the conversation here, but I've actually had a great deal of trouble getting to sleep for the last several months. I'm fine during the day, most of the time, but when I lay me down to sleep, I pray, the Lord, my soul and body to leave the fuck alone. I don't want to die. I don't want to get old, even. I don't like the idea of living life without being able to play active sports. I don't like the idea of my parents leaving me. I don't like the idea of me leaving my kids one day. I don't like the uncertainty of not knowing how I'm going to die. Am I going to get shot in the face? Hit by a drunk driver? Cancer? Die in my sleep? What's that going to feel like? I don't like it. I don't like it at all.

And one of the things that bugs me the most is that if I share this with anybody in my church, I'm looked at very strangely. I've actually alluded to that before, and someone just kind of astonishingly looked at me. It's this attitude like, "Well that's weird. I can't wait to get out of here."

Maybe I do have a lack of faith. My thoughts are that God will forgive me for the things I don't know. That death happens to everyone does not make it easier to deal with. We still don't really know anything about the process of death from the other side. It's my faith that gets me to sleep at night, anyway. The trust that God ultimately has it figured out; That death, though not easy, is but a moment.

A few songs that I'd like to have, and I've thought about this a good deal, include Daylight by braveSaintSaturn, and On Distant Shores by Five Iron Frenzy.

I think perhaps Rescue Is Coming by David Crowder*Band as well.

I'm still working on the verses. But I'm hoping I have some time.

RANT: I feel like I'm never going to be able to please my parents by partofaplan2in Christianity

[–]BraveSaintStuart 4 points5 points ago

You probably know this, but parents tend to see us as an extension of themselves. Occasionally, they really like themselves. They really like what they see in their extension. But there are plenty of times where what they see conflicts with some deeply ingrained parts of them.

I hope you can understand why your mom is upset. I mean, what if your son came to you years down the road and said, "You know... I've been wrestling with this for a long time. Homosexuality is a sin. I'm going to start letting people know about this on social networking sites."

You'd be disappointed, of course.

But, it'll be okay, as long as you don't close the lines of communication. I've philosophically and deeply disagreed with my parents (particularly my mother). If I let that control the dynamic of the relationship, it ends up hurting way worse.

So, just keep the lines of communication open. Reaffirm love as much as possible.

This has nothing to do with the argument at hand, but I just wanted to bring to mind the following, just as a reminder to all parties involved.

"Your" shows possession in the 2nd person singular. "You're" is the conjunction of "you are".

"Their" shows possession in the 3rd person plural. "They're" is the conjunction of "they are". "There" can either be an adverb answering the question "where?" or as a pronoun, along with some other uses outlined on Dictionary.com.

Just a PSA on the different uses of words.

Cherry-picking: The Foundation of Christian Faith by emmaspeaksin Christianity

[–]BraveSaintStuart 2 points3 points ago

Whether it's one book or one thousand, christians claim that it is the perfect word of god. Your argument fails.

Which Christians? All Christians? I'm sorry. You're simply picking a strawman, and blowing him over.

If it is your claim that because there are different authors that is why there has to be different interpretations, you fail again, because if it is merely human authors with no divine inspiration, why bother with it at all.

Again, false dilemma. Again, strawman. You're starting with the presupposition that there is and has always been one Christian doctrine, and that this Christian doctrine is whatever you say it is (coincidentally, a collection of the most easily defeatable ideas in Christian history). And if it's not this one doctrine that you presume it to be, then God must not have a hand in any of it.

It's easy to spout hate and dress it up with fake pearls of knowledge and wisdom. But this (being your entire blog) is one of the weakest attempts at pointing out the shortcomings in the Christian faith that I've seen in a long, long time. Out of curiosity, what kind of education do you have?

Wait, so... you want me to tell you how to interpret the Bible "keeping in mind that [there] are thousands of current interpretations," while at the same time saying there's only one "correct" interpretation... literalism or nothing. Keeping in mind that this is what we like to call a false dilemma, I will posit a third option (still just one among the "thousands", which, if we're being truthful about it, there are probably MILLIONS of interpretations of the Bible out there... one for each reader).

Certain conservative evangelical Christians have, over the years, surmised that the Bible is to be read at face value and that it contains no errors and is the entire and actual words of God. It's one of the more simply explained and simply attacked positions in Christianity. But, as you've mentioned, it's not the only position on Biblical interpretation.

The Bible is not a book. It should not be read as a book. And so when you apply one interpretation paradigm over the spectrum of the entire Bible, you're making a huge mistake.

Instead, you have to take it book by book and figure out what the book is trying to tell you. Even within books, scholars now know that in a lot of cases, particularly in the Old Testament, these are not the works of just one author.

And within books, styles can change drastically, from history to poetry from one chapter to the next. Obviously, you would not apply the same interpretation to your high school history book as you would Shakespeare, and you wouldn't apply the same interpretation to Shakespeare as you would to Orwell. Style of writing conveys as much as word choice. So, if we look at the Bible, and each book when necessary, as a collection of writings (in other words, if we look at the Bible for what it is), meaning can be more accurately extrapolated.

This is why, in my opinion, when it comes to Old Testament texts, it's so nice around r/Christianity when one of our resident Jewish folk comes along and offers an interpretation that I would have never known because I haven't been raised in synagogue.

Beyond all this, however, is the need for a Christian to, in my opinion, read the entire Bible through the lens of the Gospels. Some disagree with this, saying that the Gospels came after the Pauline epistles, and therefore the Gospels were influenced by the Pauline epistles. I say that the Gospels refine Paul's writings and are easily the most important part of our Bible.

So, with that being the case, if Jesus is the central figure of our faith, and the Gospels tell the story of Jesus' ministry and teaching, we should read the rest of the Bible (Old and New Testaments) through the lens of that ministry and teaching. If Jesus, being the Son of God, is the clearest picture of who God is, the Gospels are the backdrop against which we lay the rest of Scripture.

So... TL;DR: As Christians, we first read the Bible through the lens of the ministry and teachings of Jesus. Additionally, we read the Bible as it is, not as one book, but as a collection of books, some of which are a collection of writings or were edited over time. Each of these writings might bring a collection of styles which need to be interpreted accordingly.

Right, I noted that, and that quote is why I mentioned it. That's placing blame on all Christians, at some level, which is, frankly, bullshit.

What's there to talk about? I've never voted to ban gay marriage. I've never been presented with the opportunity to vote in support of gay marriage but would gladly do it. The knee-jerk reaction is against the idea that I am somehow responsible for what happened in North Carolina.

No one's going to take this seriously because this is not how you create dialogue.

So this is your first venture into r/Christianity?

Perhaps you should spend some time around here, maybe getting to know some of the other atheists who are here. You might not have such a terrible opinion of the regulars around here.

Still, for posting generalized rants, you can rest assured that your karma will quickly evaporate around here. It's not taken to very kindly by anyone, including atheists. It just makes you sound like an asshole.
