I know we're all huge geeks here, but Band of Brothers just may be the best thing HBO has ever produced. Glad to see it hasn't been forgotten.

Currahee!

EDIT: I can't grammar.

Any advice for a religious guy? by Jusswondrin1in seduction

[–]BradGroux 7 points8 points ago

I'm a religious guy and completely agree. As a Christian, saying that you're saving yourself for marriage and then getting to second and third base on as many women as possible? Hypocrisy at it's finest (surprise).

The Bible teaches that lust is sin (just like sex), and I'm sure when you're getting a boner making out with a hot chick you are desiring/lusting after her... so in my opinion if you're going to sin, might as well get the full benefit.

TL, DR - Don't play the "good guy card" and then ignore several of the rules on the card in the process, you just come off as an ass.

If the person's belief makes them happy and they aren't hurting anyone WTF does it matter to you?

100% of the problems in the world today are caused by "beliefs?" Bullshit. The vast majority of problems in the world today are caused by greed and ego, and that has been the case since the dawn of man. Now some of those egotistical and greedy bastards may use the banner of "beliefs" to champion their cause, but the belief system isn't at fault... the asshole using it for only their benefit is.

Would ending ties in shootouts help grow the league faster? by BradGrouxin MLS

[–]BradGroux[S] 0 points1 point ago

This post did come from Dynamo's draws somewhat. I am a Dynamo fan, and I have been trying to get my friends who are not to show an interest. It has been easier this year with the new stadium of course but the casual fans still complain about the draws.. and I've had several conversations in the past few weeks with people regarding it.

Would ending ties in shootouts help grow the league faster? by BradGrouxin MLS

[–]BradGroux[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the reply. I wanted to clarify that I have no problems with the system as it currently is. I watch European and FIFA soccer, so I know the rules and how it works... I was asking more for a broad spectrum fan base. I enjoy MLS, and want to see it grow and be a strong league which generally means butts in the seats.

So I am assuming that most US soccer fans are seeking a more organic growth of soccer with the classic approach? That is fine, but MLS is a business and if they can't make ends meet they will pack up shop. Soccer in America has made tremendous strides since my days of 5 year old YMCA soccer in 1983, but it hasn't exactly been a rocket shot by any stretch... and outside of a US team making a World Cup run, I don't really see it growing exponentially overnight, or even in the long run.

I think a long, steady growth arc is how it is going to happen (which is fine)... but what does that mean for MLS in 5, 10 or even 20 years?

  1. I think without a doubt that casual fans would rather see a shootout than leave the stadium after watching a draw.

  2. All other major sports in the US follow the simple Win/Loss ratio for deciding which teams move on to the playoffs. It is an extremely simple system to follow, unlike the soccer point system. I wouldn't consider dumping the points system as "dumbing down" the game... it would just be adapting the sport of soccer to the location.

  3. I think at this point it is quite obvious that strong growth is needed for MLS to survive. Many cities are on the right track, but there are quite a few teams in MLS that are struggling for growth and a consistent fan base. There are also only 19 teams, in a country (+ Canada) that has 4 other major sports leagues with 30+ teams each (NFL 32, NBA/NHL/MLB 30).

  4. I personally believe how the world judges US soccer is based upon the number of quality players the country produces, who then play on teams around the world. Obviously a lot of the world judges how well the national teams do as well. If MLS becomes more popular stateside, then in the long run it could greatly increase the number of players America has abroad, due to the increased popularity of the sport across the board. This of course could also greatly increase the play of the national teams.

I am not a soccer purist, but I greatly enjoy the sport. I really want to love soccer with a passion but certain things have always irked me as an "American" fan. The three biggest issues being ties, the points system and dives. I think MLS has done a better job of managing dives, and eliminating ties would get rid of the other two issues.

A lot of my bias on at least the ties and point systems is growing up in the American sports culture. I'm 33, so I played sports long before the "nobody loses" feel good leagues of late. I'm also from the south where football is king, so the lust for victory is almost bred in me (and I know I'm not alone). While most soccer purists will agree that a 0-0 tie can be a fantastic game, average American fans can feel "robbed" for not getting a finite outcome.

I try to spread the love of soccer with many of the people I know, and most of the casual fans who have given MLS a chance have these same sort of concerns. Again, I know that to the purists even discussing this is sacrilege, but I love soccer, I love the MLS and I want both to succeed beyond our wildest dreams over the coming decades... and in my opinion, these simple changes could greatly help with that.

To the soccer purists I pose this final question: If it was guaranteed that due to these changes MLS would grow to the level of the other "big four" within the next 10 years, would you do it? Or would it be like selling your soul to the devil for success?

It won't run ANY x86/64 apps. That doesn't stop Google from releasing a version that will however.

PSA: Weekend 1 GA is NOT sold out. I bought mine 5 minutes ago. by sm2sin Coachella

[–]BradGroux 0 points1 point ago

This happens with ticket sales all the time. People time out of the shopping cart and/or their credit cards are declined. I got mine on Radiohead.com last year a few hours after they were "sold out."

I had to have 5 computers on different IPs (I recommend it) refreshing the standby page, but I'm going to Weekend One! by preacherkin Coachella

[–]BradGroux 0 points1 point ago

I had two computers with two different browsers... and never got through (sat on standby page for 56 minutes). I had a lady friend who bought 2 tickets at 9:56AM, her receipt said 10:01AM. 20 minutes later, she got BACK IN and bought my tickets for me.

Just silly.

I run Google Chrome on Windows 8 consumer preview just fine. Mozilla and Google will have to create a "Metro" designed version if they want to be a part of the touch UI... otherwise they're stuck with the classic desktop.

I imagine you'll see a collection of Metro UI browsers in the marketplace, from "the big three" and elsewhere.
