Do Buddhist monks ever suffer from clinical depression? by forgtnin Buddhism

[–]Boco 1 point2 points ago

That would depend on who you're talking to. Personally and professionally I think antidepressants are among the most over-prescribed medications in the US today.

Even if they were in the 10-20% accurately diagnosed, I imagine Buddhist monks probably would (and I believe could) work through their issues with meditation practices alone. Since we're not all such active or proficient practitioners, use of medication may be appropriate in some rare cases. If it's a personal question, I wouldn't suddenly stop without speaking with your medical care provider and perhaps spiritual adviser about alternative approaches to those issues.

Nothing in this post should be construed as medical advice or the rendering of medical or professional services.

Do Buddhist monks ever suffer from clinical depression? by forgtnin Buddhism

[–]Boco 12 points13 points ago

In The Joy of Living Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche talks about his struggles with a panic disorder and anxiety as a child and how he overcomes it with Buddhism. I don't recall if he specifically mentioned depression, but I'm sure it would have been in there in the mix. The rest of the book talks about the similarities between psychology and Buddhism, with basic meditation practices scattered through it.

Even monks are human, I imagine there's bound to be some out there who either struggled with in the past, or continue to struggle with depression. However, I'm sure Buddhism goes a long way in helping them, even if they're chemically predisposed to suffer more easily from depression.

I never get people like that. Assuming they do get plenty of wins from doing this, what do they get out of it? Blizzard matching them to more highly skilled players so they'll lose even more often?

Yeah that sounds like fun...

I'm not saying it's optimal for Zerg to have to be on 3-4 bases to counter a Toss 1-2 base. But if you ever find yourself in this situation, it does work (unless he has over a half dozen robos to rebuild as fast as you).

Edit: I realize that both players being at 200/200 while Zerg is on 4 base and Toss is on 1-2 should mean Zerg is ahead (or should be capable of some type of composition to put them ahead), but sadly that's not the nature of the game. You could try outposition them with roaches and sneak corruptors around the side/back but that rarely works with good toss players who know how to FF properly doesn't walk in a wide open field.

Not to completely disagree with you but some Terran will opt for PF for their 3rd bases and beyond (unless it's a map where it's easily defended).

It isn't an issue of mules being OP, but rather that Terran still has so many options in the meta-game. PF is brutally difficult to take out before Ultras/Broods and Orbital Command is just an easy button vs cloaked units or accidentally getting supply capped.

These advantages taper off at higher play levels where players are more likely to be on top of those things, but at lower levels it definitely makes Terran an easier race to pick up and work around mistakes (or simply provide more options) in the meta game.

Mmm I plan on making my fiancée a huge pot of japanese curry for finals week.

I just wanted to add, if you plan on serving it with rice keep around large servings by throwing it into tupperware straight from the pot/rice cooker. That way it keeps enough moisture to come out the perfect texture when you microwave it a couple of days later.

You should add this to the info tab of the video if you can. Generally people don't go to the doctor/hospital over a regular splinter, hence why some people were calling you a pussy for it on other threads.

But one that's stuck in there for two weeks and originally went in the other side seems reason enough.

Thanks for the explanation!

How has 2X/reddit influenced you? by ivegotlasereyesin TwoXChromosomes

As a OneY, 2X gave me hope that men might someday have a place to discuss gender issues without degenerating into MRA bullshit statistics and mysogyny.

After joining and reading a number of gender equality and rape discussions in r/reddit and r/OneY, it's pretty clear to me that this might never happen. As r/OneY gets quieter these days, the few posts that do pop up are of the MRA sorts, slowly turning that reddit into MensRights2.

Though I may not care to read about your menstrual cycle or makeup advice, I'll still happily lurk around here for level headed discussions on gender/relationships and a community of people who truly respect one another.

Also, 2x has helped me understand some things better from a woman's perspective, which my fiance appreciates.

I'd like to preface this with, I have no idea what the fuck Gareth is talking about. Assuming the numbers from the DOJ and UN Population fund are accurate. Let's take the numbers from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape#United_States

"191,670 victims of rape or sexual assault reported in 2005"

"Only 16% of rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police (Rape in America: A Report to the Nation. 1992 and United Nations Populations Fund, 2000a)"

From this we extrapolate: 1,197,938 Actual Rapes

The figure that Gareth keeps throwing around, 52,000 false rape reports. I'm pretty sure this number is rape cases that didn't result in a conviction (not proven guilty, but nowhere near proven innocent), but for the sake of the "false report" crowd we will be using the most extreme numbers in their favor. We can use this to say the ratio is 52,000 :: 1,197,938

In other words for every 23 ACTUAL rapes, there's 1 false report of rape, using made up numbers that FAVOR the "false report" crowd. I have no idea where 5.2 falsely accused : 8.5 raped number comes from.

Here's another way we can look at these numbers: Only 16% of rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police (Rape in America: A Report to the Nation. 1992 and United Nations Populations Fund, 2000a) Factoring in unreported rapes, about 5% of rapists will ever spend a day in jail.

Even if we assume every single person in jail is innocent, that's 1 innocent in jail per 20 actual rapes.

Now if we take the REAL rate of false reports estimated at 3% out of the 16% of total reporting rate we get a ratio of 10,000 actual rape:48 false report.

He can pretend he found the FBI/DOJ sources on his own but they were the exact same links in the wikipedia article I cited at a different part of this thread. His "response to another similar comment" was to mine which used the same page.

As a final note:

About 85,000 Americans were raped in 2009. The rate of conviction for rape allegations is about 13%. This means that there were about 650,000 reports of rape in the US in 2009

WTF???

According to his numbers, 650,000 reports - 85,000 raped = 565,000/65000 false report rapes per year. He uses numbers incorrectly to assume a false report rate of 87%! But then he goes on to say false report rate is 8%. ???

Bat shit crazy math doesn't make a completely flawed argument true.

Also, in case he deletes his shit like a coward

Gareth321

This was in response to another similar comment:

The FBI records the rate of false accusation at 8%, as per the Wikipedia entry. They only include proven false allegations, meaning the real number is going to be much higher. About 85,000 Americans were raped in 2009. The rate of conviction for rape allegations is about 13%. This means that there were about 650,000 reports of rape in the US in 2009, assuming the lowest figure of 8%, there were at least 52,000 false rape reports. So for every 8.5 people who are raped, 5.2 are falsely accused of rape.

When pedestrians are exposed a representation of a man attacking a woman the reaction is to help and call the police. What happens when the genders are reversed? by Faryshtain OneY

Rewatched it over and over. In Man vs Woman, he clearly had his hand on her throat. The tone of voice used in each scenario was very different. Resistance in both situations were completely different, when the woman attacked her arms were well restrained at the wrist, when the man attacked she placed her hand on his but was in no position to stop a potentially life threatening act of violence.

I agree, apples and oranges but that's how it is with almost every episode I've seen of What Would You Do? They always do this to get more a distinct reaction between scenarios.

That being said, I'd love to see one redone with both bulky male and female attackers and relatively scrawny victims. I'm sure there'd still be a different reaction, it would just be a more powerful message when it's done right and there's still a clear distinction in how people react.

I think the point is Public CEOs are by design have the incentive to work purely for profit. Quarterly numbers look bad? Find a new CEO.

I'm not saying morals and profits are mutually exclusive (plenty of corporations do try to balance both). But if a situation arose where they had to choose, they either choose morals and make a bad "business decision" for the company (and eventually risk getting fired if that's all they ever do) or choose they turn a quick profit.

When I said lived there I mostly meant as a child. Though I've been back to visit, I couldn't say first hand what it's like these days living independently in Manhattan on 50k but I know we used to live on way less in a 5 person (with grandma) household.

Hmm I guess I mostly meant cheaper fresh Chinese (and other) ethnic groceries compared to many other states. Of course there's classy restaurants to eat out at as well. There's also tons of little bakeries/eateries at every street corner (which I'm hard pressed to find in the suburbs =/ ), but ultimately eating out is almost always more expensive. No driving (car insurance/car loan) shaves some money off the usually expenses, though it's slightly offset by paying to ride the subway every day.

Back to the original discussion though, I guess my point is that there seems to be this idea that all salaries in NYC should be 5x what it is in the rest of the US to offset the cost of living in million dollar studios in Times Square. I just wanted to point out that the average salary there isn't really all that different from the rest of the US, so 300k or seven figure annual salaries on wall street can't be justified by high living costs alone.

I used to live in Hawaii and looked back into the house I grew up in semi-recently. All I can say is that it isn't cheap (aka expensive as all hell). A run down house that cost a few hundred bucks a month in the 90's is running a few thousand (well 2k+) now. We weren't all too far from U of H, but it was a family-residential type area, I don't know for sure if sky high prices apply to apartments that are even closer to the University. I would definitely check apartment listing sites, maybe craigslist as gburgdan suggests to get an idea of what your living costs would be.

If you're in any way open to not going to Hawaii, I'd really recommend staying in-state for in state tuition. There are very few undergraduate degrees (if any) worth paying $100k+ for. This $100k could be your first house. If you're dead set on Hawaii, like gburgdan said, establishing residency first would be pretty important.

I think the "300k over 4 years" aka 75k is brought up so much in this thread because 300k is an unfathomable amount to people thinking of salaries/wages outside of wall street.

However, compensation on wall street is so insanely overinflated (million dollar salaries sound like the norm to some people) that 300k/yr is considered a paltry sum for his 18 years of work and experience. As he said "It's definitely not [very much] compared to most Wall Street earners."

Edit: To put in context, even in NYC the average salary is $50,000~, despite what you may hear about high living costs, much of it is offset by cheaper food and other benefits of living in the city. The rest people just deal with to get the chance to live in NYC. /borntherelivedthere

I understand that perfectly. My point is simply that the entire industry's worth to society is highly inflated at the moment. This guy has the closest to a realistic salary we'd find on wall street for the valuable service he provides.

If everything related to financial services wasn't so overinflated, the fees he'd expect (and the fees his clients would be willing to pay) would probably be more in line with what everyone else in society makes from accountants and real estate agents to teachers.

The problem with your attitude is you agree with the premise of questioning how we can live in a society where someone who doesn't put in comparatively more work that others who make this society function can make 6x more than the rest of us (at the low end). Compared to the rest of wall street, it doesn't seem that bad to everyone, and that's exactly the problem. Comparing it to the rest of wall street instead of the norm for the economy as a whole, the financial services bubble can keep itself inflated almost indefinitely because it controls the capital (as well as writing their own rules/regulations).

I don't consider this guy "immoral" as nirad was suggesting, maybe "amoral" about his compensation situation at worst, but most of us wouldn't turn down a 300k/yr job esp after working toward it for 18 years. The problem is with the financial services sector as a whole normalizing it's abuse of their capital control powers.

While "monkey's job" may be a bit harsh, you bring up a very important point. Wall street is highly overcompensated for what they contribute to society. Sure capitol allocation is important to a free market, but so is human resources, accounting, etc. It's funny because I came here to talk about how this guy does the main thing we DO need wall street to do.

Since money/power is so heavily concentrated in wall street, we've ended up with CEOs getting paid what the "market will bear" while everyone else lives off of what "near empty bellies will bear". How free and fair is a free market when all the rules/regulations governing the financial sector is written by former/present/future heads of that very same industry?

Edit: It's truly sad that the overcompensation of wall street has become such a norm that even normally progressive thinkers on reddit refuse to question a $300,000 salary when people with advanced degrees make ~$73,000 and everyone else is around $50,000. For those of you wondering it's the average in New York as well.

This is my main account too.

I agree, there are some men out there who suffer silently due to gender expectations in our society. Sadly, I know this all too well.

This

most of them were probably fucked over by an ex-wife and are completely jaded by women

is the exact same feeling I get on many of the comments I read when I stumble on a r/mensrights post that someone links to.

Instead I poke around OneY which tends to take a not-so-misogynistic approach to gender issues. Sure, some from the men's rights crowd poke in, but at least there they'll get downvoted when the dialogue becomes hateful/unproductive.

What is the best non-iPod mp3 player on the market right now? by andonatoin gadgets

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're into dials/buttons I've been pretty satisfied with my Sansa Fuze for years. The dial is similar to the iPod dial except it's mechanical rather than touch sensitive (not to be confused with cheaply made, I've been spinning it for two years, it's pretty solidly built).

Expandable memory and having some type of video was a huge draw for me. Since I already had a bunch of MicroSDHC cards laying around, it was just a cheap high capacity MP3 (not 100+GB high, but 16GB is plenty for my collection) player for me. If you're not too happy with being limited to avi format, pick up the opensource firmware Rockbox for a lot more options. With I've basically turned it into a text reader for game FAQs/walkthroughs lately.

If you don't care specifically for the dial or videos and can do with just buttons, the Sansa Clip+ is great too.

Edit: One last thing, the Fuze and Clip have gotten pretty great reviews about their sound quality. I've had a great experience personally, but I'm not really an audiophile or anything either.
