Great to hear it's working. If you are set on using straight SFTP it is worth noting that both nautilus and finder supports SFTP built in, there are also fancier alternatives that like Transmit that support syncing.

My recommendation is still getting into rsync as it is absolutely worth it. The syntax looks like this:

rsync --progress user@adress:/path/to/source/folder/to/sync/from /path/to/folder/to/sync/to "--progress" is optional and " user@adress:" depends on which folder is remote.
