Anderson Cooper cuts interview with 'Human Barbie' short by kelsbarin videos

[–]BlackbeltJones 37 points38 points ago

Wolf Blitzer, the man who crossed the into the red zone to interview Saddam Hussein, buttressed by the booming baritone of James Earl Jones saying (paraphrased), "Sit down. Shut the fuck up. This Is C N N..." anyway, right now Wolf Blitzer is reading user-submitted tweets about American Idol's season finale.

Decision to overturn

tl;dr: This commission finds the following to be true--

  • His BAC was only 0.089% so he really wasn't that drunk

  • He's had it pretty rough anyway since his 17 month-old baby died and his wife tried to kill herself

  • He's only been charged with one disciplinary violation before, and it was a "Category D" violation, so how bigga deal is this really? Welcome back!

Was the US Government's system made to make the rich govern? If so... by yaaaarrr_mateyin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]BlackbeltJones 1 point2 points ago

Wishful thinking. Why would people care more to participate in government simply by virtue of a having a day off? A day off they can otherwise use for idle revelry?

It's not just disillusionment with government and politics. People just don't care because a perception exists that their participation doesn't yield results. People can barely bring themselves to vote once every four years.

Celebrity AMA guide: open to suggestions, criticisms, and comments by Drunken_Economistin IAmA

[–]BlackbeltJones 6 points7 points ago

Cool guide.

If you're gonna list celebrities, you ought to include their profession, and make sure you have a decent cross-section. I see all comic actors and nerds.

The content is solid but the layout is a little "I threw this together". The font sizes and colors for headers and body text should be uniform throughout, the body text font is a bit too small to be emboldened alongside so much wasted white-space, blah blah, tl;dr: forward it to the idle hands over at /r/design.

“Democrat” Roy Schmidt pulls ultimate dick move, jumps to GOP too late for another Dem to run by HouseSpeakerin politics

[–]BlackbeltJones 1 point2 points ago

I know these making these "first past-the-post" alternative voting method comments appear in every single comment thread in /r/politics is the latest craze...

Don't use it to exonerate the voting public carte blanche. It's hardly "silly" to hold an individual accountable for their own vote and their own intent.

Watching Congress Status Thread by handsoffmein watchingcongress

[–]BlackbeltJones 1 point2 points ago

Often, at the time the post is made, there is no "full text of the bill" available. Either it hasn't been finalized or the Congressional Printing Office hasn't made it available.

So a post is made that a bill is about to be introduced, but you can't actually read the text of the bill.

This kills the discussion.

How controversial is it, really?

And when will it stop being controversial? Will it be controversial for the next 100 years?

Must every instance of historical ugliness be indulged as some unforgivable sin until the end of time?

Maybe that sin can be forgiven since the entertainment industry is no longer off limits to black people, and being a black actor/performer/celebrity is no longer a novelty or anomaly.

Maybe the kid's parents recognized that their son wasn't playing some offensive Al Jolson "mammy" version of Martin Luther King.

Maybe his parents were proud that their son took an interest in a figure like Martin Luther King, or maybe they just wanted their son to "have fun" with the school assignment.

Maybe since it was absolutely clear this 8-year-old kid's motives were entirely genuine, the teachers and principal who are supposed to set an example of maturity and model behavior might have exercised a bit of pragmatism.

His getup was not offensive. It was not controversial.

And "White Kid Paints Face to Dress Up as Martin Luther King" isn't a news story. "Unwitting kid reprimanded for something that happened 75 years ago" is much more /r/funny and therefore /r/offbeat /r/news.

He was on TV because the teachers pulled him out of class and told him to wash his face. The boy didn't understand why.

This happened last week in Colorado Springs, CO.
